So today I found out something pretty interesting. Branching from the new-found proof of water on Mars, it was actually discovered that a hypothetical element 119 (Was called Ununennium before its discovery) could be found on Mars. Because of the lack of Oxygen on the planet, this element can remain on the planet. It falls under the Alkaline metals category under the periodic table. Like Francium, it reacts very violently to water, except it's speculated that the effects would be 8.6x higher than that of Fr. I can't wait to learn more about this newfound element! (An attachment below shows its place on the periodic table of the elements)

I don't understand.
Does the reaction of Fr and water lead to fission or fusion of Fr into some other element?

Reaction of Li with water gives LiOH and 0.5 equiv of H2 - but doesn't transmute Li into another element.
>>
No, this element wasn't created, or anything. Small amounts of it were found on the planet.
>>
How does one "hypothesise" about elements? How do you guess if an element exists?

Does this method find all possible elements or are there some we still might be unaware of?

How do I understand a math textbook? Every time I try to read this Calculus textbook its a huge whatthefuck. I feel really stupid. I'm trying to teach myself Calculus. Anybody know how I can do that? I got an A in Pre-Calc.

You have to

>make sure you have a book that doesn't just suck shit
>It's math. It's only fair that you have to think a bit, isn't it?
My Calc III professor recommends Salas and Hille's Calculus. I'm using Swokowski's Calculus, and it isn't terrible.

This. It's either trig or precalc for your prereq in my state.
Everyone in my first Calc class who took precalc spent the semester in extremely loud agony.

Trig is a very nice opportunity to pick up important knowledge AND important skills. It ties together the entirety of your math education up to that point.

Precalc tells you what a logarithm is.

Its been bothering me though that I can't figure out what atom it would represent.

Two electron orbits. 2 electrons on one, and 6 on the other.

Can any of you help me figure out what atom this most likely represents?

I do think so. Proper meditation should bring you into a higher state of consciousness, a state of higher alertness. You then no longer try to mentally label things or situations, and sometimes you might feel that things change.

Hey, /sci/, looking for physics help. I'm not understanding this problem, not looking for homework help per se, just comprehension.
So on a rollercoaster, at the top of a loop (pic related), what is the direction of the centripetal force?
My understanding was that it was always toward the center of rotation. A friend explained that in this case, gravity and normal force (from the tracks pushing back on the car) keep the car in rotation and the centripetal force is negative keeping the riders in the car.
Is this accurate?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
What I'm not understanding is the direction and role of centripetal force in this case. And what force is pushing upward (keeping the riders from falling out).
>>
Your friend is wrong and probably gay. Centripetal force is always radial and directed to the center. What is keeping the cart moving is the inertia of the tangential velocity at every point.
>>
The plot thickens.
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071125162300AAk4fw9

This is my exact problem with the correct answer and in the solution centripetal force is explained to be upward.

How does that make sense?

>"I'm interested in a hack to keep the porn but have a better sex life. "

I'm in need of a life hack:

Here's my story:

I'm a porn addict, fapping and training fapping since 12. I can fap and ejaculate 50-90 times in a 24 hour window and have done, but average at 5x a day.

This is great and with my work/life (Cognitive Neuroscientist) I'm maxed out cumming in my free time...but here is where I need the hack.

Usually I don't care about women, but i've recently been dating one woman and having sex 15-20x a week depending on free time, and am looking to take on more sexual partners concurrently.

I theorize that the porn and fapping is numbing my libido and interfering with my current and potential sex life, but the porn is so good and the fapping is efficient and often better than sex.

I'm interested in a hack to keep the porn but have a better sex life.

I will be here for a few hours to answer any questions

>I can ejaculate 90 times a day

90/24 = 5.625 ejaculations per hour, assuming 8 hrs of sleep

lolwut? not even don jon fapped that much
>>
>>7650888
Well. The initial thought is consumption of dopamine precursors (L-DOPA, perhaps via mucuna pruriens). Normally after orgasm prolactin levels rise and drive it down. Prolactin is involved in a sensation of sexual satisfaction, elevated levels reduce libido, and problematically, levels that are too low have been shown to result in a reduction of sex drive, So the only viable way to approach it from that angle is some way to only modulate hormonal and neurotransmitter regulatory factors, something that is unknown to me and probably not even readily possible.

The other option is to approach it psychologically. A thing where advice can't really be meaningfully communicated.
>>
>>7650888
How do you have the time to jerk off 5x a day? All after work? Imagine how productive you could be if you didn't waste your time like that.

College professor just said the following:

"If you are looking at a charge in a magnetic field, and then you make you coordinate system move at the same speed of the charge, then there is no longer a magnetic field. This is needed when studying relativity to eliminate magnetic fields from your calculations. You can also use it in E&M to make your calculations easier."

Is this true? You can't just ignore a significant component of reality can you? She is kinda retarded and like mumbles a lot so maybe she is wrong.

Pic not related, heat treatment.
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It is correct. You aren't ignoring reality - the E field and B field transform into each other.
That's why real scientists use shit like tensors and differential forms.
>>
It's just the principle of relativity.

Look at it this way: a magnetic field is set up between two charged particles if they are moving relative to each other. If you make your coordinate system move with a certain particle, then the magnetic field is zero with respect to any other particle that is also fixed with respect to the coordinate system. In other words, the two particles are not moving relative to each other, so the magnetic field between them should be zero. That makes perfect sense.

It makes calculations easier because now you can eliminate all the terms for particles that are fixed relative to your coordinate system. They're just 0.
>>
>>7650714
Yeah I understand that. But from a practical standpoint I can't design my wire system to run through a magnetic field and say, "oh if I just make my coordinate system move then I don't have to account for the magnetic field in this design."

Are there any unknown planets in our solar s system we don't know of exist?

Yes. The sun is actually an elaborate construction of a mirror like material. A number of planets orbit on the inside.
>>
>>7650666
>>7650000
There might also exist a huge number of planets consisting of a material that is both massless and that doesn't affect electromagnetic waves in any way.

let's talk pot

before i begin, i'm neutral. I support legalization because I don't think the government should be someone's nanny, but I don't smoke it and think "blazeitfags" are fags.

what are the dangers of pot? I don't believe what the potfags say that it's totally harmless, but I also don't believe the government-funded researchers who say it's bad either.

set me straight, /sci/

Speaking from personal experience, I use to smoke habitually and became borderline schizophanic at the time. I was never a part of the culture, I just happened to be around people who smoked a lot.

Granted, I was taking frequently vyvanse and getting high at the same time (which I'm certain is an awful, awful combination), I found myself becoming increasingly paranoid and losing touch with reality. At one point in time, I was half convinced I was a messiah at some point along with a tulpa. I was in a weird place...

My roommate, who was providing it to me, would frequently lock himself in his room and smoke several bowls while listening to GREEN AND PURPLE on repeat. Dude was convinced (for reasons I don't understand) that I was secretly plotting to kill him in his sleep.

This all went on for about 9 months. When I decided to quit, I quit cold turkey. No cravings, no lapses. It'd be about 6 months until I smoked again. Mind you, all this happened about 3 years ago, and I've maybe smoked an average of once every 2 months tops since.

Provided that these are all anecdotes, I still don't believe weed is entirely safe. I support legalization, but it really does fuck with your head after long periods of time in inperceptible ways. It wasn't until I quit that I realized exactly how fargone I'd become.
>>
>>7650643
Most things are both good and bad. Some of that can be reduced to relatively objective measures, such as compromised core functionality. Some depends on the individual's psychology or physiology. The rest is up to opinion and personal desire.

Weed is more or less the latter two. I don't like it because it separates me from the stream of my thoughts and is apt to push me into memories I don't want, then ditch me there. It also makes me burnt, stupid, and extremely afterwords. Fuck all that.

I know people who have been daily stoners for the last 40 years. Many of them show no meaningful differences when compared to other likely non-stoner populations. Though that isn't to imply major differences don't exist, it just means their mental faculties, memory, etc are intact.
>>
the dangers of pot, from more harmful to least harmful:

-smoke, its fucking bad for your health. I mean seriously bad

-it can become a bad habit, which reinforces other bad habits. you become lazier, less motivated, your short term memory becomes slightly worse. all this is reversible though (given that you are over 20 yrs old and not fucking up your teenage developing brain) and varies from person to person.

-can trigger psychotic episodes-paranoid behaviour. I put this last, because it happens to a very small percentage of users, and usually they freak out, realize pot is not for them, and never touch it again.

A Top Scientist based in Japan has discovered evidence suggesting the initial runs of the LHC created a blackhole in which we are caught within its horizon where time moves infinite.

Scientist are back and forth with theories, some pointing out that there is no need to panic since we will all get to live out our lives and an infinite number of generations so long as we dont destroy the earth ourselves within that time.

Others are criticising the scientists at cern for completely ruining the chances for space travel out of our immediate solar system.

So the Fermi paradox seems true. A species who evolves up until a point is more than likely to destroy themselves as we have destroyed ourselves. At least we can carry on living on this world but it just doesnt feel right...

What is it that causes life to occur?
What separates living things from things that are not ?

why is that animial a living thing and not that rock beside it, they are both made up of atoms and chemistry and ect, and at a molecular level, are the same?
On the smallest molecular scale, at what point do living and not living matter differ?
