What are the most useful math courses you can take beyond the basics such as calculus and linear algebra?

real analysis.
or rational trig, if you hated highschool trig
Differential Eqs and Statistics
>>8435896
Complex analysis.
Will mathematics share the fate of poetry and philosophy? Since large parts of it are fancy ways of expressing things.
What do you mean by share fate?
>>8435950
become obsolete, redundant and unwelcome
probably not all math though

Philosophy is still very much alive with plenty of new discoveries every year.
Tell me /sci/, if consciousness and intelligence are produced by the brain, then how the FUCK does this guy have a degree in mathematics when 90% or more of his brain is missing?
http://rifters.com/real/articles/Oliveira-et-al-2012-RevisitingHydrocephalus.pdf
only use 10% of our brains is just a meme they said.
>>8435775
This man's brain is not 90 percent missing, it's mostly compression by fluids that make it look like that. Also it's been known that other parts of the brain have been known to take over functions of missing parts.
>>8435828
No, actually, it isn't compressed, it has been replaced by fluids. There is some compression going on but the cerebral mass is actually ~90% less than that of a normal person. I didn't pull that number out of my ass, there have been many studies done on this guy.
What if High school teachers were required to publish?
would that help western education?
>>8435758
would set the bar too high, no one would be teachers
also what kind of groundbreaking research could you do with the equipment in a high school lab
>>8435763
>would set the bar too high, no one would be teachers
What if the school was required to publish as a collective in a few subjects? that way specific teachers don't have a huge burden on themselves. That way you'll get intellectuals in the classroom to teach the youth.
>also what kind of groundbreaking research could you do with the equipment in a high school lab
you'd of course need to provide better equipment and such, but I think it'd end up a good investment
>inb4 who grades the work if they're busy researching?
hired uni or over preforming highschool student graders who assist the teacher if necessary
>>8435758
the #1 function of school teachers (below uni level) is being a day-care attendant
that's really, really, really, really, REALLY different than publishing research
like we might as well require the janitors to be amazing at painting in water color. those skill sets are about as related as teaching high school and publishing research
Choice 1) Fully funded undergrad program from University ranked no higher than top 50 in your field (includes modest living expenses)
Choice 2) Undergrad program at #1 University in your field but graduate with $250,000 of debt
>>8435517
Student debt or real debt?
>>8435517
Critical thinking time here. What is education and what is your $ buying? At its' core what differentiates Unies (besides cost)? Consider the following to make a decision:
- Facilities: access to cutting edge labs and facilities; but is this really necessary?
- Talent: access to really smart professors; but despite their smartness how good are they at communicating/mentoring?
- Practical Experience: research projects; useful if you want to be Uni researcher after graduation but otherwise? Also you can fill in with internships.
- Pay premium: incremental STARTING SALARY you would get for a top 10 school; does it support the more than incremental (in my opinion) debt?
- Pedigree: others in your field will more likely respect you for your school rather than your abilities. It is a bit of a problem in science/math these days (again my opinion). Does the school that issues the degree matter enough to you?
That is all I can think of right now. But I chose a hybrid of 1 and 2. I went to community college for 1-1/2 years knowing all courses would transfer in to my chosen Uni. Then I paid for the rest in three relatively equal parts:
- 1/3 parents (god bless them)
- 1/3 loans (paid these off in 5 years)
- 1/3 work (I worked a full time hourly wage job all while attending Uni; I skipped the frat parties, etc. I am not ashamed to say I slung chicken at KFC; it paid my room and board)
I think at the end of the day, You get out of Uni what you put into it. You study and get a good GPA you will get a job post graduation.
Personal note: I had a stroke 2 years ago so am on long term disability (which is why I had so much time to be on 4chan ;). But I was making $145,000 a year before that.

Thanks for the post
The sole purpose of my studying mathematics is so that I may one day find a result that will completely rip apart the entirety of the mathematical enterprise. Yes, I am a sadist. The idea of seeing mathematicians around the world in despair because they realize they wasted their entire lives studying an ultimately pointless field brings me pleasure.
Which area of mathematics should I focus on my chances of achieving this? What has the most potential to break mathematics?

Kind of a weird question, but here it goes: how do I go about testing my garden soil for drugs?
Put it in a pipe. Smoke it and see if you go to Narnia
>>8435311
negatory, I'd be testing for non-smokables anyway.
>>8435318
If you can't smoke it then it technically isn't a drug.
Hey, currently a maritime academy cadet, former physics major 3 years ago. I'm applying for the Navy's NUPOC Program (Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate).
As such, I need to brush up on my physics and calculus before my interview and examination.
What are you recommendations for calculus and physics textbooks? I need a calculus book that covers integral and differential calculus, and I need a physics book that covers Newtonian mechanics, electromagnetism, and a few other basic concepts like that, but it of course has to be calculus based, not algebra based or conceptual.
It also has to be sufficiently detailed that I will be able to understand what's going on without a professor, and just consulting the internet when I'm stuck on something.
For that reason, pic related, Stewart Calculus, is to be avoided. I had this book as a freshman for calculus and it was fucking awful. I never understood what the fuck the author was talking about because he would skip over so many steps. Without my instructor clarifying every concept ad nauseum, I never would have made it through that class.
>>8435246
Hate the way Stewart covers integral calc.
calc -> Salas\Hille\ Etgen?
basic physics -> Tipler\Mosca?
dynamics -> Beer or Bedford\Fowler
The calc book is geared towards engineers. Skips over a lot of esotera, which is nice if you're trying to review alot of material quickly. The physics book covers electromagnetics pretty well, and formulas for common applications are highlighted.
If you really want to pwn dynamics, use Beer. It's denser than a black hole, but worth it. If you just want to brush up on basic stuff, use Beford.
>>8435282
Thank you, this is very helpful. If I recall correctly, dynamics isn't covered very extensively in the interviews and examinations. 70% of it is pure calculus and physics up to and including electromagnetism, and then the rest is a mixture of chemistry, dynamics, etc.
I think the purpose of the examination is mostly just to see that you're not a retard and that you'll be able to pass Nuclear Power School.
>>8435246
Careful with asking recommendations on /sci/ as these retards only recommend meme books aimed at math majors that they've never even got halfway through. These books also usually don't give you any practical applications (ex: not reading a normal calculus book and instead reading analysis book you'll fail even at AP calculus)
What is the farthest/narrowest laser focus in use today?
Is there some hard limit on the minimal angle of spread from a laser?
What do you mean by farthest laser focus exactly?
>>8435248
Well I use a laser against a wall I get a dot about the same size as the lens. But if I aim at a building 1 mile away, the dot on the building is about the size of a car. Maybe I haz shitty laser. But in theory I expect a good laser to have a dot the same size as the lens even if pointing at the moon.
Lasers are diffraction limited, meaning that the sharpest point they can be focused to is limited by the size of the hole the light comes out through, and by the wavelength of the light. If you point a very good laser on the moon, the spot will still be several hundred square kilometers.
let's see if you can solve this, I'll tell you if you are correct or not
you know, i can see it a bit too well, maybe you should blur it a bit more
>>8435249
I can see it just fine
I can see it, but it took work.
Obligatory consciousness thread.
I'm for idealism. The physical is a construct of the mind.
>>8435168
Then why does every single piece of evidence we have point to reported states of consciousness being causally downstream from the physical brain rather than upstream? You ingest chemicals that interact with the brain, your consciousness changes in radical and relatively predictable / repeatable ways. You get brain damage from physical injury, your consciousness changes or shuts down. You have a stroke, your consciousness changes or shuts down, etc. A lot of evidence is there for the mind being a production of the brain.
