Why do professors do this?
>>8428781
Literally wat?
>>8428781
Wow. I don't even have a facebook.
Fuck modern education.
>>8428781
No fucking way.
You poor fool.
Pics?
Do you guys worry we may come to the point where we just can't know anything more about the world?
Not that we figure everything out but it becomes physically impossible to accurately test any further hypotheses leaving science over but not "finished"
>>8428675
Yes I have this thought too sometimes, the idea that some problems in science might be intractable or even too impractical to figure out. I don't think we're there yet at least not in the life sciences but I can't say anything about physics or chemistry. But yes I do think that will be an issue eventually.
if you want to get real mad it's a proven fact that such is the case in math
i forgot the guy but basically he found a mathematical equivalent for "this sentence is a lie", thereby proving that there is at least one unresolvable thing in math
>>8428675
We've already hit that point.
Have you ever turned a valve and felt the rush of fluid contained within that pipe system behind your hand? All that pressurized power at a single touch, I can see why the ancients put so much time and effort into developing plumbing and flowing water systems.
What kind of scientific developments have been made in the way of Valves and Pipes?
Maybe an engineer can help me out here, why are some valves painted Red? Is there any significance to that?
>>8428614
Some valves have a ball mechanism like this
(remember on a real pipe, it would not be transparent and the mechanism would be hidden by the pipe's siding)
>>8428614
>What kind of scientific developments have been made in the way of Valves and Pipes?
gonna let you in on a secret. fluid behavior still baffles the fuck out of scientists. the best we have are a bunch of numerical approximations based off a 70+ year old model.
doing CFD is honestly more of an art at this point.
>>8428620
And other valves have a flat plate like this for their mechanism, called a butterfly valve. I wonder why the different kinds exist and what they're each good for
Is it scientifically possible to increase your IQ?
I used to have an IQ of 100, but after browsing pol for a few years i took an IQ test again and got 140, are there any other ways to increase IQ? I want to see if i can hit 200.
I know about the whole causation is not correlation thing, but i don't think i would've scored 140 if i hadn't learned so much from pol.
yeah ingest a gram of benadryl every night for like a month. Should have you winning fields medals in no time
>>8428527
Can you link me a study that demonstrates benadryl increases IQ?
>>8428538
Just use google
How can we possibly know that c, for example, is exactly what it is? It's technologically impossible to measure the exact value of anything, since there's always some error, and in case it was derived from formula we can be only as sure about it's value as we are about the theory from which the formula are taken.
>Science of exact values
Unless defined from other variables (also subject do doubt), they are always to be doubted.
The end.
>>8428463
But then how do people know that c is exactly what it is?
>>8428456
Good question. It triggers me when autists say that pi goes on forever because obviously you can't measure it that exactly. Sure people have measured it up to the precision of the Planck length, but the rest of the digits are just theoretical and can't be known for sure.
Prove to me that you're conscious right now.

QED
I hope I'm not because this fucking sucks

Why are you all so retarded?
Please answer a question correctly for once. No one in the world fucking understands light do they? Water doesn't heat up by absorbing microwaves, it heats up because it aligns itself with a wave that is changing from positive to negative and the water moves back in forth but why does the water align itself with only certain microwaves and not any other frequencies at all? Explain it. Do it right this time :)
>>8428448
ELF to low microwave band radiation is bad for you.
>>8428469
... that's not an answer
>>8428474
For you.
Really makes ya think.
>>8428411
If you didn't figure out that evolution was bullshit from the beginning during those intro courses in junior high and high-school then I don't feel bad for you.
During my time, parents had to sign a waiver to allow staff to teach it. It is second to sex Ed and drivers Ed.

Going to be giving a 10-20 minute talk at my school. Has to be about math, or something related but cant think of any ideas.
I'm in my last year of a mathematics BS, looking for something not too advanced but still interesting enough to speak about.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Who a are you giving the presentation to?
Talk about fractals/Mandelbrot set.
>>8428341
Knot Theory
Dynamical Systems
Matrix Analysis
Modern Geometry
Elliptic Curves
Distribution Theory
Once computers get fast enough, can't we just have all problems solved through guess and check instead of needing math anymore? Will math eventually become a historical relic like the I Ching or bodybuilding?
Chaitin constant
/sci/,
what exactly is time in the context of physics? If all particles in the universe were suspended in absolute zero (hypothetically) for 5 minutes. Are those 5 minutes actually 5 minutes? Or does time require motion?
>>8428224
Time is a spatial and linear dimension. Just by existing, you are advancing in time.
>>8428234
>linear
nope
>>8428253
I sometimes hate how people here just say something is wrong without even explaining why or providing evidence against it.
Does animosity between pure scientists and engineers, and between biology and "hard science" exist in real life, oe is it just a slash sci slash maymay?
No it's mostly a gay ass meme believed by undergrads and pushed by cancerous shows like Big Bang Theory.
The only thing I will say is true is that a lot of physicists and mathematician really do believe that they are capable of dominating other fields if they wanted to. This idea has really been enforced by how mathematical other fields have become in recent decades.
>>8428242
t. salty soft science undergrad
xDDD I bet if physicists tried to explain biology, theyd advance the field light years ahead faster than you fags
Why does there need to be some kind of rivalry between the sciences? Why not appreciate the insights other fields can bring about?
Except psychology of course, thats not a science.
Long story short, how do I chemically castrate someone so that the it takes at least a couple of days to take effect and there are no noticeable side-effects? (So obviously HURR JUST INJECT SOME MERCURY won't cut it). It has to be something you can easily get.
I'm not gonna tell any stories and I'm not gonna respond to butthurt, so you may as well just hide the thread.
>>8428179
>chemically castrate
It's a fair bet you have no idea what this means
>>8428223
this

You're projecting. My goal is to induce permanent impotence. Ideally make the subject unable of producing testosterone as well.
Why does anyone besides the recipient themselves care about prestigious prizes? First Grigori now Dylan. I know the inherit irony in posting, being an observer myself, but is academia and science finally realizing the unimportance of these things? Are narcissists like Nash finally dying off? Heck, I've even heard talk about ceasing the Olympics. It has already begun with non-score-keeping children sports.
Shinichi Mochizuki will probably keep his prize money, maybe donate some if it to RIMS. I can only assume the guy is a recluse because he feels the rest of the world is too stupid to understand his work.
>>8428692
if the rest of the world couldn't understand his proof he wouldn't have won the prize you idiot. do you even know what you're saying? also Mochi won't win the prize since his theory doesn't deal with any element of algebraic cycles in a manner that has an anabelic isomorphism.
>>8428152
who is dylan?
Is immortality feasible? Or is it just a pipe dream
Immortality is impossible. Everything and everyone dies eventually, even if it takes billions and billions of years. Radical life extension, on the other hand, is very feasible.
Radical life extension please explain more anon
