>A Russian spy ship sank in the Black Sea Thursday after it struck a merchant freighter, the Turkish Coast Guard reported.

>The surveillance vessel Liman collided with a Togo-registered Youzasif H, a freighter carrying livestock, 18 nautical miles from the coast of the Black Sea and northwest of the Bosphurus Strait's entrance into the sea, near the city of Istanbul. Russia's Black Sea Fleet frequently passes through the strait as they head for the Mediterranean Sea, but it was unclear if the spy ship was heading into or from the Black Sea.

>All 78 people aboard the Russian ship were rescued, the Turkish Coast Guard said, adding that the freighter sustained minimal damage. Fog was reported in the area at the time of the collision.

>The Russian Defense Ministry said the Liman sustained a large hole below its water line, the BBC reported Thursday.

>Turkish Prime Minister Binali Tildrim spoke with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev by telephone after the incident, Turkey's Anadolu Agency reported.

>The Liman was briefly famous in 1999, when it was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea to monitor NATO operations in Yugoslavia.

Ohohohoho. Their aircraft carrier broke a couple of months ago as well. Looks like Putin needs to up military spending.
>>

Their last carrier pretty much never works. They should just sell it to China and refocus on their submarine fleet. Or even better, since the Russian navy has always been incompetent since the era of the Czar, spend more on the air force or army. Either of those would be immensely more useful for what Russia needs.

http://www.voanews.com/a/narrow-turkish-referendum-victory-reveals-economic-concerns/3828065.html

>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's referendum victory to extend his powers was bittersweet.

>For the first time he lost in Turkey's main cities, including Istanbul, which has been his electoral power base since 1994. In the aftermath of his narrow win he has ordered a party investigation into the vote. The drop in support coincides with an economic slowdown, an ominous sign given the president is facing crucial polls in two years.

>Erdogan’s unprecedented electoral successes were largely achieved in a period of economic boom, but those halcyon days appear to be waning.

>"Currently, inflation rate is at 11.3 percent and is expected to increase further to around 12 percent in the coming months,” observes Inan Demir, an economist for Nomura Bank, “It would constitute the highest inflation rate since before the global financial crisis in 2009. Also, unemployment is at multi-year highs. So we are talking about a significant jump in the inflation and unemployment rate."

>The impact of the economic slowdown has been felt the most in western Turkey, where more than 70 percent of the country's economic production is located, and most closely linked to European markets. The same region saw some of the biggest drops in support for the president in the referendum vote. While the Turkish economy is predicted to grow faster than that of Europe, it is still below the rate needed to absorb new entrants into the labor market.

Disaffected youth

>A striking development of the referendum was the youth vote, overwhelmingly voting no, bucking its traditionally stalwart support for Erdogan.

>>
>"Youth unemployment is affecting the first-time vote. The youth unemployment ratio was 25 percent, according to the last data, notes Atilla Yesilada, a political consultant with Global Source Partners, “Fifty-eight percent of first-time voters voted "No." (citing IPSOS research). According to OECD research, Turkish students are the unhappiest in the world with 72 percent saying they are very unhappy with conditions. So given Turkey's very high rate of young population, up to six percent of the voters in the next election cycle, which starts in March 2019, will be first-time voters, which in my view is slipping from their [Erdogan government's] grasp”.

>2019 is scheduled for an unprecedented three polls - of local, general and presidential elections.

>Erdogan’s success in the referendum was due in part to the overwhelmingly support he received in the rural heartland of the country, known as Anatolia, a region that has particularly benefited from the expansion of social security benefits under Erdogan’s AK Party rule.

>“I detect that certain voters are becoming clients of AKP, these people can't survive in the globalized economy of Turkey,” claims consultant Yesilada, “they are largely existing on account of the welfare state and also AKP has been very successful in imposing the view entitlements are coming form the party, rather than the state. So a dependency has been created between the poor in Anatolia and AKP, and these are people are so afraid if AKP ever loses they will lose their entitlements.”

>In the run-up to the referendum, the government again turned to state intervention, launching major programs of cheap loans for businesses, job creation schemes, and massive public works projects.
>>
Early elections?

>Economists predict that with individuals and private companies racked with debt, more state intervention is likely, ”Turkey will find it difficult to sustain that debt-fueled growth, that's why the public sector will play an increasing role in supporting economic activity going forward. Personally, I expect elections to be held earlier than the current schedule. I would not be surprised to see elections by this time next year. So I think it can be sustained until that time."

>The pressure to call early elections will deepen worries about how the government will fund it’s growing economic and financial programs. “So [numbers] are simple,” warns Yesilada, “we cant borrow abroad, because it very costly or foreign lenders are no longer willing, and Turkish deposits have been completely converted into loans. I don't know how this can go forwards.”

>Given that the bedrock of Erdogan's electoral success has been built on economic prosperity, the continuation and trajectory of those programs ultimately could determine his fate.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/04/23/sean-hannity-accused-of-sexually-harassing-fox-news-contributor.html

>Sean Hannity is the latest Fox News personality facing allegations of sexual harassment.

>During a Friday interview with Tulsa, Oklahoma-based radio host Pat Campbell, former Fox News guest Debbie Schlussel accused Hannity of inviting her to his hotel room before and after a debate with a pro-Palestinian guest in Detroit. Schlussel said she rejected Hannity’s alleged advances and that she was never invited on his show again.

>Schlussel and Hannity were scheduled to speak together at the Detroit show, Schlussel said. But before the show, Hannity allegedly invited her to an event at a nearby bookstore. The Daily Beast was not able to confirm whether the pair ever spoke at such a show.

>“He had some event at a bookstore where he signed his book for people standing in line. He asked me to come meet him at this book signing,” Schlussel said on Campbell’s show. “So I met him there and it was very awkward. He had me up there with him while he signed books and I felt very weird. These people don’t know me and they didn’t come for me to sign their books. Then I left to get ready for the show, and he said, ‘Why don’t you come back with me to my hotel?’ and I said no, I have to get ready for the show.”

>Shortly before the show, Hannity allegedly told Schlussel they would team up against another panelist. But Schlussel told Campbell that the move was a “head-fake” against her.

>“Sean came up to me and said we’re gonna double-team (which was a weird phrase to use) this Palestinian guy that I was up against on the show,” Schlussel said. “And then every time I tried to open my mouth and say something, they yelled at me and said obey your host, you can’t say anything or else we’re gonna shut off your microphone.”

>After the show, Schlussel claims Hannity made another advance on her. “My dad and my brother were there in the green room,” Schlussel said, claiming that Hannity “tried to get me to go back with him to the hotel after the show.”

>Schlussel claimed she rejected the offer a second time, and was not invited on any future Hannity programs.

>“After that, I wasn’t booked on his show again. And he called me and yelled at me,” Schlussel said. “I got a very weird feeling about the whole thing, and I kind of knew I wouldn’t be back on his show.”

>In a statement to The Daily Beast, Hannity denied Schlussel’s allegations and accused her of seeking attention.

>“LET ME BE CLEAR THE COMMENTS ABOUT ME ON A RADIO SHOW THIS WEEK by this individual ARE 100 percent false and a complete fabrication,” Hannity wrote. “This individual is a serial harasser who has been lying about me for well over a decade. The individual has a history of making provably false statements against me in an effort to slander, smear and besmirch my reputation.”

>“The individual has not just slandered me over the years but many people who this individual disagrees with,” Hannity wrote. “This individual desperately seeks attention by any means necessary, including making unfounded personal attacks and using indefensible and outrageous political rhetoric.”

>He went on to threaten legal action against Schlussel.
...
>>
>“My patience with this individual is over. I have retained a team of some of the finest and toughest lawyers in the country who are now in the process of laying out the legal course of action we will be taking against this individual. In this fiercely divided and vindictive political climate I will no longer allow slander and lies about me to go unchallenged, as I see a coordinated effort afoot to now silence those with conservative views. I will fight every single lie about me by all legal means available to me as an American.”

>Hannity and Schlussel have a history of clashing, after she wrote a 2010 blog post accusing him of running a scam charity for military families. Schlussel alleged that less than 4 percent of the revenue from Hannity’s “Freedom Concerts” went to U.S. troops and their families, and that most of the concerts’ earnings went to lavish expenses. Hannity and his colleagues denied the allegations.

>In 2007, Schlussel wrote a blog post accusing Hannity of “deliberately ripping off” an anti-Muslim column she wrote in the New York Post.

>“That’s Sean Hannity for you,” she wrote in the 2007 post. “This is not the first time he’s done this to me, just the latest.”

At this rate, the entire Fox News will be sued for allowing sexual assault.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/04/26/lawmaker-accused-starting-red-pill-forum-reddit-won-resign/RD057SBlGTwLoOMC9lLVLM/story.html

(CONCORD, N.H.) — A Republican state lawmaker accused of creating a misogynistic online forum is resisting calls for his resignation and says he will "stand strong for men's rights."

The Daily Beast reported Tuesday that Rep. Robert Fisher founded The Red Pill, which calls itself a "discussion of sexual strategy in a culture increasingly lacking a positive identity for men." The Daily Beast traced a variety of online usernames back to Fisher. It quotes comments many of those usernames made, on The Red Pill and other sites, that degrade women's intelligence and appear to normalize rape.

Fisher denied his role in the forum to The Daily Beast, but he didn't repeat that denial in a statement to New Hampshire reporters. He said the rape comment in particular, made on a different forum in 2008, was taken out of context. In a thread discussing "absolute truth," Fisher wrote, "Rape isn't an absolute bad, because the rapist I think probably likes it a lot. I think he'd say it's quite good, really."

Fisher, in his statement, goes on to say that he faced "false rape accusations" in his early 20s that brought him to "a very low place." The Daily Beast reported Fisher no longer runs the forum.
>>
Republican House Speaker Shawn Jasper said he was "sickened" by the story and urged Fisher's constituents not to re-elect him in 2018. House Minority Leader Steve Shurtleff and a number of other Democrats called for Fisher's resignation.

"I am shocked and disturbed by the report linking Representative Robert Fisher to deeply offensive statements and the creation of a misogynistic online forum," Shurtleff said.
>>
Fisher, 31, is a two-term representative from Laconia who does not serve on any policy committees, at his own request, according to the legislature's website. Fisher lists himself as a "computer technician" and owns a computer repair business.

He has missed about 50 percent of all votes this legislative session, according to state records. He is a co-sponsor of 14 pieces of legislation, including bills to expand the use of medical marijuana, to ban the practice of gay conversion therapy on minors and to reduce business taxes.

>The Pentagon is investigating whether Michael Flynn broke the law by receiving money from a foreign source after retiring from the service, according to a letter written by the Department of Defense's acting inspector general to House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz.

>News of the letter, which was released by House Oversight ranking member Elijah Cummings Thursday, comes as Chaffetz is asking the Pentagon to consider making Flynn forfeit hundreds of thousands of dollars to make up for payments from entities linked to the governments of Russia and Turkey.

>"When a retired member of the military does not obtain advance approval for a foreign payment," House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz wrote to Acting Army Secretary Robert Speer Thursday, "the Department of Defense treats the payments as 'erroneous,' creating a debt in favor of the federal government."

>The standard way to settle that debt, he added, is by withholding pension or retirement payments.

>Detailing the money Flynn was paid, Chaffetz cited $35,000 from the Russian news agency RT and $530,000 from a Dutch company Chaffetz said is owned by "a Turkish businessman with links to the Turkish government."

>The Department of Defense's acting inspector informed the House committee that it had started its own investigation into Flynn's activities earlier this month, Cummings said today.

>The developments come one day after Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Cummings, D-Md., said at a joint news conference that from the evidence they've seen, "Flynn neither asked permission nor reported the funds" he was paid by foreign entities, as the Two-Way reported.

>Today, Cummings cited an Oct. 8, 2014, letter to Flynn from the general counsel of the Defense Intelligence Agency that the ranking member described as "explicitly warning Flynn, as he entered retirement, that he was prohibited by the Constitution from receiving payments from foreign sources without advance permission."

>In the letter, the agency said it was responding to Flynn's "request for a written opinion regarding the ethics restrictions" after his retirement.

>Cummings also says that the DIA's account of its discussions with Flynn about his Russia trip contradicts what the former general said through his lawyer earlier this week, Cummings said, when the retired general's attorney alleged that Flynn had "followed appropriate procedures for accepting foreign funds for his trip to Moscow in December 2015 when he dined with Russian President Vladimir Putin."

>Flynn was fired by President Trump from his job as national security adviser for giving statements to administration officials that obscured his contacts with Russia's U.S. ambassador.

>"Flynn later offered to testify to the congressional committees investigating the potential connections between Trump's campaign and Russia's interference in last year's election if he could secure immunity from prosecution," NPR's Phil Ewing reports. "So far, neither the House nor Senate Intelligence Committee has agreed to make such an arrangement."

>Cummings said that after getting documents related to Flynn from the Department of Defense, "Our next step is to get the documents we are seeking from the White House so we can complete our investigation."

>In his letter to Acting Secretary Speer, Chaffetz also asked to be informed about "any other emoluments clause violations" that might have been taken up since Jan. 1, 2010.

http://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/27/ex-treasury-sec-larry-summers-just-completely-trashed-the-trump-tax-plan.html

>President Donald Trump's plan to roll back taxes in the hope that doing so will generate robust economic growth with little impact on debt and deficits is "absurd," former Treasury Secretary and White House economic advisor Larry Summers said.

>In fact, Summers added in an interview with CNBC, that had he been asked to present such a plan with the notion that it would pay for itself, he would have refused.

>"If I had been asked by the White House to assert a proposition as demonstrably false as the claim that this plan would produce revenue, I would have resigned rather than put the credibility of the department behind a proposition that no one with real experience would believe was true," he said.

>Summers served as head of the Treasury during the Bill Clinton administration and as senior economic advisor to President Barack Obama.

>The cornerstone of Trumps' economic agenda is that, as well as simplification of the tax code, it will unlock growth, which was strong under Clinton but plodding under Obama.

>In a proposal rolled out Wednesday by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Gary Cohn, Trump's chief economic advisor, the number of individual tax brackets would be cut to three and the levels for wage earners across the board would be reduced.

>In addition, the plan would slash business taxes and give companies a much lower tax rate for profits earned overseas and brought back to the U.S.

>Summers said he was surprised at the apparent lack of thought in a proposal that was presented as a single-page document.

>"Most presidential campaigns during the primaries, when they put out a tax plan, they put out more than one page. They put out some analysis, some models, some careful articulation of the proposal and estimate its effects," he said.

>"There's none of that coming from the administration, and yet there's this confident statement that it will pay for itself," Summers added. "I don't know how they could possibly know without having done economic work."

>Comparing the Trump tax-cut plan to those launched by predecessors including Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, Summers said there are arguments on both sides about their net effects.

>However, he said, there is "no — no serious read of the evidence to suggest that they came close to paying for themselves by stimulating economic growth."

>To be sure, White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney said Thursday that the Trump administration meant to make the plan outline it released vague, and assessing its long-term impact is difficult right now.

>Sending out the Treasury secretary to make the claim undermines the office, Summers said.

>"I just don't understand what could cause an administration to put its secretary of the Treasury in a position to assert something ... that is generally regarded by economists as absurd," he added.
>>

>>In addition, the plan would slash business taxes and give companies a much lower tax rate for profits earned overseas and brought back to the U.S.

I can already think of at least one person that will benefit personally from this.

It will be interesting to see if multinational companies bring that money back, or if the other countries involved just offer a lower tax rate.

Simplification will undoubtedly be a good thing even if the new rates are too generous.
It will at least be a good test of the effect of massive tax cuts.

God bless America!
Always nice to see risky economic experiments performed by other countries.

tl;dr: Muslim CEO offers to hire refugees, Alex Jones accuses CEO of being complicit with child rape, CEO sues Alex Jones, Alex Jones asks for donations for legal fees

>Yogurt company Chobani has filed a lawsuit against conspiracy theorist and right-wing radio host Alex Jones, whom it accuses of spreading fake news about the company and its founder.

>The company says that Jones’ media company Infowars spread “ false” and “defamatory” reports alleging that the company’s Idaho factory, which employs refugees, was connected to a 2016 sexual assault against a child and a rise in tuberculosis cases.

>The Infowars website and Jones’ channel on YouTube published the claims on April 11, and the story spread widely on Twitter, appearing under the headline “Idaho Yogurt Maker Caught Importing Migrant Rapists.”

>Chobani filed the lawsuit in Idaho District Court in Twin Falls, where it operates the largest yogurt manufacturing plant in the world.

>Chobani’s founder, Hamdi Ulukaya, has become a target for the far-right for his support for refugees; he employs more than 300 refugees in his factories and in 2015 set up a foundation to help displaced people.

>The mayor of Twin Falls, Shawn Barigar, has said he received threats for supporting Chobani, and far-right websites including Breitbart and World Net Daily (WND) have stoked conspiracies about the company, with WND in 2016 publishing an article about Ulukaya originally entitled “American Yogurt Tycoon Vows to Choke U.S. With Muslims.”

>Ulukaya, a Turkish migrant of Kurdish extraction, told Time Tuesday that the Infowars story had crossed the line, and he felt compelled to act.

>"I am fine with criticism. But there's a line. We're living in a civil society," he told the magazine.

>In the 17-minute video Jones called Chobani “Islamist owned and backed” and claimed Ulukaya “infiltrated” the United States “with the clear backing of Turkey.”

>Jones alleged that Chobani’s lawsuit was backed by liberal billionaire George Soros. The Hungarian-American former financier is known for supporting progressive organizations via donations and has frequently been target of far-right smear campaigns.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/rape-allegations-against-real-madrid-star-ronaldo-it-has-to-be-less-a-1144878.html

>Four days before the away game in Bilbao, Cristiano Ronaldo had to take care of an important private matter. On Jan. 12, 2010, his lawyers and a mediator sat together with a young American woman who claims to have been raped by the professional football player for Real Madrid. They were seeking an out-of-court settlement.

>Portuguese attorney Carlos Osório de Castro, who has advised Ronaldo on all his legal matters for years, also attended the appointment with Susan K., whose name has been changed for this story, and her lawyer. He informed his client in a text message about the current state of negotiations.

>"The mediator now says that she has broken out in tears and that she is shaken because she thinks you're not interested in this matter and are someplace else altogether," Osório de Castro wrote: "So far, there has been no talk about money, but that's coming."

>Ronaldo answered, "OK."
12 posts and 0 images submitted.
>>
>On April 14, DER SPIEGEL reported about the rape allegation lodged by Susan K. against Ronaldo. The case created a stir. The agency of Ronaldo's adviser Jorge Mendes released a statement claiming that the story was "journalistic fiction" that was based "on documents which are unsigned and where the parties are not identified."

>But that statement is false.

>DER SPIEGEL is in possession of the document outlining the out-of-court settlement between Susan K. and Ronaldo. It originates from the trove of data supplied by the whistleblower platform Football Leaks. In the documents, Ronaldo also appears under the codename "Topher." A "Confidential Side Letter Agreement" states the pseudonym refers to the football player. And: The paper is signed by Ronaldo. There's no reason to doubt the document's authenticity.
>>
>The text messages exchanged between Ronaldo and lawyer Osório de Castro, of which DER SPIEGEL is in possession, also substantiate that the football player already knew in 2010 what he had been accused of in Las Vegas -- and that he was very interested in the details of the agreement, especially the financial particularities.

>Forty-seven minutes after the first SMS, Ronaldo received a second message from Las Vegas. This time, it was just a number: "950,000 dollars." It appears to be the sum that the counterparty was seeking in compensation. Ronaldo wrote back: "That's the amount?"

>Osório de Castro answered: "That is the first demand: That's 660,000 euros. We won't accept it. The negotiations are continuing."

>Ronaldo then asked: "Is that too much?" Osório de Castro replied: "I think so. I think we'll close this for less."

>Ronaldo then demanded: "It has to be less!" His lawyer replied: "OK."
>>
>The messages between Ronaldo and the lawyer provide several insights. First, when it comes to his career, Ronaldo doesn't leave anything to chance. Second, the football star monitors his money very closely. And finally, even today, those close to Ronaldo do not shy away from trying to cover up events that took place during the summer of 2009.

>The agency of Ronaldo adviser Jorge Mendes is called Gestifute and it is headquartered in Porto, Portugal. In the firm's statement about the case in Las Vegas, released on April 14 in response to the SPIEGEL article, it seeks to discredit the presumed victim. It notes that Susan K. "refuses to come forward and confirm the veracity of the accusation."

>But it's a deceitful statement because K. is prohibited from speaking out about the matter.

>The out-of-court settlement between Ronaldo and K. clearly stipulates that she is not permitted to repeat the allegations against the football player -- especially publicly. If she violates the agreement, she is required to pay back the settlement she received from Ronaldo in addition to possible damages.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-palestinians-gaza-abbas-idUSKBN17T1J0

>With the prospect looming of a Middle East peace initiative by a new U.S. administration more sympathetic to Israel, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has decided to turn the screw on the Hamas group that has kept Gaza out of his control for a decade.

>Abbas's Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) on Thursday told Israel it would no longer pay for the electricity Israel supplies to Gaza, a move that could lead to a complete power shutdown in the territory, whose 2 million people already endure blackouts for much of the day.

>Israel does not engage directly with Hamas, regarding the Islamist group as a terrorist organization.

>The PA declined to say why it had taken the step, but had already put pressure on Hamas by withholding the Israeli fuel that until two weeks ago powered Gaza's only generating plant, and slashing the salaries of the civil servants who are one of the mainstays of Gaza's struggling economy.

>Medical workers say health services are on the verge of breakdown, while shopkeepers say they are struggling.

>Hamas official Ismail Rudwan reacted with fury, warning of "an explosion in the face of the Zionist occupation" and saying that anyone who had "collaborated with the occupation" would have cause for regret, whether from the PA or not.

>"We will not pay a political price for this crime," he said.

>Ostensibly, the reasons for the withholding of fuel and the salary cuts were non-payment of bills, and shortage of foreign donor funds.

>But regaining a measure of control over Gaza could empower Abbas politically as Israel and the Palestinians await a widely expected push by U.S. President Donald Trump for a revival of peace efforts that stalled in 2014.
...
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>Palestinian Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah, based in the West Bank, made no secret of the PA's political motives on Wednesday, saying at an event in Ramallah that the lifting of the salary cut depended on Hamas moving towards reconciliation.

>"I think there is a golden and historic chance to regain the unity of our people," he said. "Hamas should relinquish control of Gaza."

>CIVIL WAR

>Abbas's Fatah movement, which controls the PA, fought a brief civil war with Hamas in Gaza in 2007, which led to Hamas seizing full control of the territory a year after winning parliamentary elections there.

>Several attempts at reconciliation, most recently in 2014, have failed to produce a power-sharing government for the West Bank and Gaza, and analysts say Abbas is now trying to force the issue.

>Health officials say the Gaza Strip's 13 hospitals and 54 medical centers are running short of funds and fuel for emergency generators.

>They say some 620 kidney patients in need of dialysis three times a week and newborns are at particular risk from blackouts, with generators at all the medical facilities using a total of some 2,000 liters of fuel per hour.

>"All health services could stop within the coming few days," said Ashraf Al-Qidra, spokesman of the Gaza health ministry, calling on humanitarian organizations to offer more help.

>The PA has also slashed the salaries of its 60,000 civil servants in Gaza - but not the West Bank - by 30 percent, offering no explanation other than a lack of foreign aid money.

>The civil servants' pay is one of the few sources of steady income that trickle through the Gaza economy, and supports tens of thousands of extended families.

>Store owners complain of the weakest sales in years.

>"After God, the country (Gaza) depends on the salaries of the employees," said Fahd Abu Sultan, 28, a shoe salesman.
...
>>
>Economists said the wage cuts would also shrink the tax revenue collected by Hamas - which it in turn uses to pay the 40,000 employees it has hired in Gaza since 2007.

>Hamdallah said Hamas should accept an Abbas initiative to form a true unity government immediately and then go to presidential and parliamentary elections, which have not been held for more than a decade.

>"Let whoever wins rule," he said.

>Hamas has been a thorn in Abbas's side for his entire 12 years in office, but the 82-year-old appears to have been stung into fresh action by Trump's election.

>In suggesting that he will try to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, he has struck a much warmer tone than his predecessor towards Israel and its settlement building in occupied Palestinian territory, and thrown into doubt Washington's commitment to a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

>Within weeks of Trump's election, Abbas took steps to shore up his authority in the West Bank by tightening his control of Fatah.

>But his biggest weakness remains the fact that Gaza is controlled by a movement shunned as a terrorist group by the US and the EU, as well as Israel.

>Hamas has, since its founding in 1987, advocated the destruction of Israel, seeking all of historic Palestine as its land, even if some of its leaders have indicated in recent years that they would accept a more limited Palestinian state on land occupied by Israel in 1967 in return for a long-term truce.

>Political analyst Hani al-Masri wrote in a recent paper that Gaza's status "allows Israel and regional and international parties to continue to question the legitimacy of Abbas's leadership and his representation of all the Palestinians".

>"Abbas realizes that Trump will ask him to be humble in his demands because 'you are weak and Gaza is under Hamas control and you have troubles inside Fatah',"

>"Therefore, Abbas wants to go to Washington after it has received his message about the strong and decisive steps he has taken."

On the 25th of April, ANZAC occurs. ANZAC day is when Australians and New Zealanders remember and commemorate the many thousands of soldiers who were sent on a suicide mission to Gallipoli.

Basically its the most patriotic day in the Aussie calendar where they give you a day off work to get cooked and play two-up, a gambling game illegal on most days of the year. People get really REALLY defensive if you say anything about ANZAC day that isn't, "Those soldiers were heroes, were only here because of them (false), blah blah blah"

This ANZAC Day, an Australian female muslim reporter put a status on facebook which upset a lot of people. But not just upset them. She set the nation on fire. People are up in arms and wanting her deported, visa's taken off her, fire her from her job. All because she decided to highlight the horrendous way in which our government deals with refugees (put them in a detention centre offshore for an indefinite period of time).

Thoughts, comments?

>“At the end of the day I don’t like what she said. I was offended by what she said. But I still support her right to freedom of speech, and my right to be able to turn around and say lest we forget, Yassmin, that you are brown, you are Muslim and you are a girl, and that’s the only reason you have a job at the ABC.”

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/state-department-posts-trump-s-mar-lago-raises-ethics-concern-n750406?cid=public-rss_20170425

>A glowing description of President Donald Trump's Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago — calling it the "winter White House" — was posted on State Department websites, bringing criticism from ethics watchdogs and Democrats.

>The item, published ahead of an early April meeting with China's president at the Palm Beach club, recounted the club's history and Trump's purchase and gilded redecoration of the property where he's spent half his weekends since taking office.

>Under the heading "A Dream Deferred" — drawing on a famous line from the Langston Hughes poem "Harlem" — it said the original socialite owner wanted Mar-a-Lago to be a retreat for American presidents but notes it didn't happen until Trump won the election.

>The text appeared on the website for Share America, a State Department platform intended to "spark discussion and debate on important topics;" the website for the U.S. Embassy in the United Kingdom and the Facebook page for the U.S. Embassy in Albania.

>The State Department initially declined to comment on the posts, but later unpublished them and said, "The intention of the article was to inform the public about where the President has been hosting world leaders. We regret any misperception and have removed the post."

>Three ethics watchdogs who reviewed the posts before they were taken down told NBC News they are troubling.

>"They represent violations of a federal ethics regulation which prohibits the use of public office to endorse a product or enterprise," said Kathleen Clark, a professor at Washington University Law.

>"Calling it the 'winter White House' appears to suggest that Mar-a-Lago has an official governmental role, which would appear to provide a governmental endorsement."

>Jordan Libowitz of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said the post "reads almost like an ad for Mar-a-Lago."

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/march-for-science-rallies-mark-earth-day-in-cities-around-the-world/
>NEW YORK -- Scientists worldwide left their labs and took to the streets Saturday along with students and research advocates, pushing back against what they say are mounting attacks on science.

>The March for Science, coinciding with Earth Day, was set for more than 500 cities, anchored in Washington, D.C., and to be joined by dozens of nonpartisan scientific professional societies in a turnout intended to combine political and how-to science demonstrations.

>“When the first time in recorded history scientists have to get together to form a march in support of science, something serious is going on,” Rockefeller University’s Erich Jarvis told CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook, who is covering the march in Washington.

>Organizers portrayed the march as political but not partisan, promoting the understanding of science as well as defending it from various attacks. They cited proposed federal cuts to the National Institutes of Health totaling $6 billion, or 18 percent of the institute’s budget.

>The marches also come at a time when Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the future of the planet. A CBS News poll found this week that just 12 percent of Americans believe the environment will improve for the next generation, while 57 percent said it will get worse.

>Washington, D.C.

>Signs and banners readied for the Washington rally reflected anger, humor and obscure scientific references, such as a 7-year-old’s “No Taxation Without Taxonomy.” Taxonomy is the science of classifying animals, plants and other organisms.

>The sign that 9-year-old Sam Klimas held was red, handmade and personal: “Science saved my life.” He had a form of brain cancer and has been healthy for eight years now. His mother, grandmother and brother traveled with him from Parkersburg, West Virginia. “I have to do everything I can to oppose the policies of this administration,” said his grandmother, Susan Sharp.

>Thousands of participants walked down Broadway to midtown Manhattan. The march was set to end at West 52nd Street.

>Boston
>Scientists from across Massachusetts are planning to gather on the Boston Common at 1 p.m. for a rally.
>Among those participating are scientists and researchers from Harvard University, MIT, Clark University, UMass-Lowell and Massachusetts General Hospital.
>Scheduled speakers at the rally include former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy, who has been sharply critical of Trump’s efforts to unravel former President Barack Obama’s plan to curb global warming.

>Berlin
>Several thousand people participated in a march from the one of the Berlin’s universities to the Brandenburg Gate landmark.
>Meike Weltin is a doctorate student at an environmental institute near Berlin. She said she was participating because - in her words - “I think that politics need to listen to sciences.”
>Germany’s foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel, has endorsed March for Science events across Germany. Gabriel says “free research and teaching are the supporting pillars of an open and modern society.”

I found this and was surprised how it wasn't discussed at all. It will not translate into anything good. I think there should be something done so people would actually start panicking about it properly.

http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/south-koreas-presidential-hopeful-moon-jae-in-under-fire-over-anti-gay-comment

>South Korean presidential front runner Moon Jae In came under fire Wednesday (April 26) for saying he did not like homosexuality, prompting angry protests at a campaign event by gay rights groups.

>Moon, a former human rights lawyer of the centre-left Democratic Party, leads opinion polls by large margins before the May 9 presidential vote and has enjoyed wide support from young liberal voters.

But his remarks over homosexuality during a televised debate Tuesday left many of his supporters scratching their heads.

>"I'm against homosexuality," Moon said when asked by a conservative rival whether he opposed homosexuality, adding he had "no intention" to legalise it or same-sex marriage.

>Homosexual acts are not a crime in South Korea, but it remains a conservative and patriarchal society and does not recognise same-sex marriage.
