In the end, it came down to the credibility of a teenage girl who was raped in 2013 while trying to catch an OC Transpo bus to visit her grandmother.

The girl, then 15, said she had been gang raped and four Ottawa men went on trial for sexual assault, forcible confinement, sexual interference and sex with a minor.

On Monday, though, three of the four accused were acquitted by Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/22/nyregion/mta-seeks-bus-and-train-thiefs-profits-from-potential-movie-deal.html

>For more than three decades, Darius McCollum’s transit exploits have appeared in police reports and newspapers. Then came the news this month that his story might be turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts.

>But on Monday, officials at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said that they would move to recover any profits he would earn from the film because the agency had been a victim of his crimes.

>It was the latest chapter in the tale of Mr. McCollum, New York City’s famed train and bus thief. Mr. McCollum, who has Asperger’s syndrome, is currently in jail at Rikers Island on charges that he stole a Greyhound bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal last fall.

>A spokesman for the authority, Kevin Ortiz, said it would try to recoup any “ill-gotten gains he receives from participation in this purported film project.” The agency called upon the producers to notify New York State’s Office of Victim Services about the details of their financial arrangement with Mr. McCollum, who will turn 51 next Monday.

>Variety reported last week that Ms. Roberts was set to star as Mr. McCollum’s lawyer, Sally Butler, in “Train Man,” a film based on his life. A producer described the film to Entertainment Weekly as “‘Erin Brockovich’ meets ‘Catch Me if You Can,’” referring to the film that won Ms. Roberts an Oscar and another in which Leonardo DiCaprio played a con artist.

>The authority said it would seek to obtain any money that Mr. McCollum makes from the film project under a New York State law intended to prevent criminals from profiting from their crimes. The statute, known as the Son of Sam law, is based on legislation created to prevent David Berkowitz, the serial killer, from profiting by selling his story.

>A transportation enthusiast, Mr. McCollum first gained notoriety in 1981 when he took over the controls of a train in Manhattan at age 15. Since then, he has been arrested more than two dozen times and once dressed as a transit employee to get inside a subway control room.

>On Monday, Ms. Butler said that it was outrageous that the authority was going after “what little money Darius may or may not get.” A film deal has not been made final, she said, and it is unclear how much Mr. McCollum may receive.

>“It’s not going to be such a significant amount that the M.T.A. would want to waste money on the team of lawyers they would need to pursue this,” Ms. Butler said. “They will take it over my dead body.”
...
>>
>Ms. Butler defended her client, saying he was a kind person who had not injured anyone. He needs mental health treatment, not further punishment, and the authorities should seek his advice about how to improve security, she said.

>“If it’s true that he can walk in and take a bus, maybe you need some help,” said Ms. Butler, who declined to comment on her potential portrayal by Ms. Roberts.

>The Gotham Group, the film’s producer, declined to discuss the film or to comment on the authority’s request to notify the victim services office.

>In November, Mr. McCollum was arrested on charges that he stole a bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan after officials tracked it to the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. He is being held on a $50,000 bail or $100,000 bond.
...
>>
>At an authority board meeting on Monday, Charles G. Moerdler, a member of the board, said that he was concerned that Mr. McCollum would not stop taking trains and buses on joy rides.

>“I think you need to establish a precedent,” Mr. Moerdler said. “You do this sort of stuff, and you pay the penalty.”

>Veronique Hakim, the head of the city’s subway and bus system, told board members that the agency would take on the issue and signaled her disapproval of the film.

>“Apparently,” Ms. Hakim said, “I’m not in touch with what makes for good popular entertainment.”

>Son of Sam laws have been cited frequently over the years to try to keep offenders from gaining from their crimes. Last year, prosecutors said that David Sweat, an inmate who escaped from a state prison, would not be able to profit by selling his story of the manhunt that followed.

>Leon Friedman, a professor of constitutional law at Hofstra University who worked on a case involving Son of Sam laws in the 1990s, said it appeared the authority had a good case to seek money from the film.

>Mr. McCollum “did commit a crime, and they suffered as a result of it,” Mr. Friedman said, referring to the authority.

>“And now he has additional money as a result of this deal,” he continued.

>Mr. McCollum’s mother, Elizabeth, said on Monday in a phone interview from her home in North Carolina that she hoped the film would show the true story of struggles her son had faced over the years. He deserved to keep the money, she said, adding, “This is the story of his life.”

For the past 600 years, she has been feted as a national heroine for driving the English out of France. Now Joan of Arc is again at the heart of a furious row between Europe’s oldest enemies.

A gold-plated silver ring believed to have been owned by the French martyr, who defeated the English before being burned at the stake, was sold last month at auction in London for nearly £300,000 (CAD $556,383). Given to Joan by her parents for her first communion, it was seized from her prison at her death in 1431 by a bishop and taken to England, where it stayed until this year.

>>
The French, however, won a tense bidding battle over the relic, whose pre-sale estimate was only £10,000 (CAD $18,547).

To mark the trinket’s triumphant return, the owners of Le Puy du Fou historically-themed amusement park who bought the ring staged a lavish ceremony on Sunday before 5,000 people near Nantes in western France.

Philippe de Villiers, the founder of Puy de Fou, told the crowd before a rousing rendition of La Marseillaise: “It’s a little bit of France that has returned. The ring has come back to France and will stay here.” But the entrepreneur and politician then revealed there was a new twist to the saga.

He explained: “The British government has sent our lawyer an unprecedented demand — the return of the ring to London. We are told that the National Arts Council considers this ring part of those objects with, and I quote, ‘High national symbolic value’ and should have been part of a special legislation.”

According to the demand, on purchasing the ring Le Puy de Fou should have obtained an export licence necessary under European regulations.

The U.K. has strict guidelines for exporting items of national and historical importance, and requires a licence for any antiques that are worth more than £39,219 and have been in the country for more than 50 years. Obtaining the licence is the responsibility of the exporter, not the auction house.

If the licence is deferred, a U.K. buyer has an opportunity to match the price.

Brett Hammond, the managing director of auction house TimeLine, told Art Newspaper: “We handed over the ring to the buyer’s solicitors in London on March 3. We also gave them a letter, which they signed for, advising them the ring would need an export licence.”
>>
A spokeswoman for Arts Council England, which oversees the export regulations, said: “Given the age and price of the item, its export would require an individual licence.”

De Villiers’ son, Nicolas, who runs the theme park, confirmed on Monday that he had received a letter asking to send back the ring. But he said: “It is inconceivable that the ring leaves France or is put back on the market for a British buyer to put in another bid.”

He claimed Joan of Arc was “one of the last bones of contention between France and England” and the ring’s return was an act of “appeasement.”

Any attempt to reclaim it move would be “deeply traumatic for France” he said and added: “We are simply putting history to rights.”

Nicolas de Villiers said the ring had been paid for through private donations, varying from €20 (CAD $30) to €50,000 (CAD $73,173).

His father, a prominent conservative, reiterated that there was no question of handing it over.

“Is the ring part of England’s national heritage?” he asked the crowd, which booed loudly. And then cheers erupted when he asked if it was part of France’s heritage.

Philippe de Villiers claimed that he had checked the rules and insisted they applied only if the object is taken out of the European Union.

And in a final flourish, he stated: “Ladies and gentlemen from Britain, if you want to see the ring, come to Le Puy de Fou. For the rest, it’s too late. The ring has returned to France and here it will stay. Even if the European Commission orders it back.”

A teenage peasant-girl-turned-war-commander, Joan of Arc did her best to defeat English forces who had invaded France. She was captured, tried for heresy and burnt at the stake in Rouen.

I swear to god, the British require a license for fucking EVERYTHING. If they're not considered a caricature of themselves yet, this is surely nudging them in that direction.

No, they're very dedicated. Here's the proof, from the article:

> “[We will] build a copy of this Mars outpost here on earth. Each of these teams will be hired full time to train for the mission for 10 years and each year, they’ll be locked up in the simulation outpost, at least once, for an undetermined period of time,” Lansdorp said. “So when they go in, they have no idea if they’ll be in for 15 minutes or the whole year. Because on Mars there’s no countdown.”

> According to Lansdorp, Mars One will find the right teams over the 10-year period before the first manned mission is planned to launch. As teams drop out, Lansdorp said Mars One will repeat the selection process every year, so that the number of teams in training will grow to 10-15 by 2026.

> “And on Earth, we’ll give em hell. Everything will go wrong. So after they’ve been in for three months, and everything has already been going wrong — the life support system breaks in the middle of the night,” Lansdorp said. “So they wake up, fix the life support system, or they’ll suffocate, then they go to bed. They have about half an hour of sleep before they have to wake up. They wake up, and the toilets in the outpost are broken and there’s a huge smell.”

A British suicide bomber has carried out an attack on Iraqi forces in Anbar province, the so-called Islamic State group has claimed.
A militant named as "Abu Musa al-Britani" used a car bomb to target a convoy of Iraqi army and aligned Sunni forces, "killing nearly 30", it said.
However, Iraqi military disputed the claims, saying it believed only the bomber died in the attack.
The group made the claim on its account on the messaging app Telegram.
It claimed the convoy had left Ayn al-Assad military air base and was heading towards Kubaysah.

>US presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is the only candidate for the country's top post who has decided to not take part in next week's conference for the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC.

>In a letter to Robert Cohen, the chief of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, on Friday - Sanders, the first Jew to ever win a presidential primary in the US, expressed regret that he could not conduct a speech at the event due to his busy campaign schedule.

>"Obviously, issues impacting Israel and the Middle East are of utmost importance to me, to our country and to the world," he said.
"Unfortunately, I am going to be travelling throughout the West and the campaign schedule that we have prevents me from attending."
