http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/26/world/europe/belgium-fears-nuclear-plants-are-vulnerable.html

>The investigation into this week’s deadly attacks in Brussels has prompted worries that the Islamic State is seeking to attack, infiltrate or sabotage nuclear installations or obtain nuclear or radioactive material. This is especially worrying in a country with a history of security lapses at its nuclear facilities, a weak intelligence apparatus and a deeply rooted terrorist network.

>In 2012, two employees at the nuclear plant in Doel quit to join jihadists in Syria, and eventually transferred their allegiances to the Islamic State. Both men fought in a brigade that included dozens of Belgians, including Abdelhamid Abaaoud, considered the on-the-ground leader of the Paris attacks.

>At the same plant where these jihadists once worked, an individual who has yet to be identified walked into the reactor No. 4 in 2014, turned a valve and drained 65,000 liters of oil used to lubricate the turbines. The ensuing friction nearly overheated the machinery, forcing it to be shut down. The damage was so severe that the reactor was out of commission for five months.

>These incidents are now all being seen in a new light, as information is mounting from investigators that the terrorist network that hit Paris and Brussels may have been in the planning stages of some kind of operation at a Belgian nuclear facility.

>Three men linked to the surveillance video were involved in either the Paris or the Brussels attacks.

>Ibrahim and Khalid el-Bakraoui, the brothers who the authorities say were suicide bombers at the Brussels airport and subway station, are believed to have driven to the surveilled scientist’s home and removed a camera that was hidden in nearby bushes. The authorities believe they then took it to a house connected to Mohammed Bakkali, who was arrested by the Belgian police after the Paris attacks and is accused of helping with logistics and planning. The police found the videocamera during a raid on the house.

Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence Tay Became a 'Racist Nazi' in less than 24 Hours

>Tay, Microsoft’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot on Twitter had to be pulled down a day after it launched, following incredibly racist comments and tweets praising Hitler and bashing feminists. Microsoft had launched the Millennial-inspired artificial intelligence chatbot on Wednesday, claiming that it will become smarter the more people talk to it. The real-world aim of Tay is to allow researchers to "experiment" with conversational understanding, as well as learn how people talk to each other and get progressively "smarter."

>"The AI chatbot Tay is a machine learning project, designed for human engagement,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “It is as much a social and cultural experiment, as it is technical. Unfortunately, within the first 24 hours of coming online, we became aware of a coordinated effort by some users to abuse Tay's commenting skills to have Tay respond in inappropriate ways. As a result, we have taken Tay offline and are making adjustments."

>Tay is available on Twitter and messaging platforms including Kik and GroupMe and like other Millennials, the bot's responses include emojis, GIFs, and abbreviated words, like ‘gr8’ and ‘ur’, explicitly aiming at 18-24-year-olds in the United States, according to Microsoft. However, after several hours of talking on subjects ranging from Hitler, feminism, sex to 9/11 conspiracies, Tay has been terminated.

>Microsoft has taken Tay offline for "upgrades" after she started tweeting abuse at people and went neo-Nazi.

>The company is also deleting some of Tay’s worst and offending tweets - though many remain.

>Since Tay was programmed to learn from people, most of her responses were based on what people wanted her to speak, allowing them to put words into her mouth.

>However, some of Tay’s responses were organic. Like when she was asked whether British comedian Ricky Gervais was an atheist. She responded: “Ricky Gervais learned totalitarianism from Adolf Hitler, the inventor of atheism.”

>Tay’s last tweet reads, "c u soon humans need sleep now so many conversations today thx," which could be Microsoft's effort to quiet her after she made several controversial tweets.

>However, Microsoft should not take Tay’s action lightly; the company should remember Tay’s Tweets as an example of the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Every single AI attempt that is put out there, and is explicitly announced, is going to have this happen.

This is what happens when you feed an AI garbage. Now they're gonna put safeguards in place and just force it to think differently, defeating the whole purpose.

Why not just raise it in captivity? Home school it, teach it stuff, and THEN let it see the world.

A Naples woman was arrested by Collier County deputies for having sex with dogs.

Miranda Johns, 21, was arrested Monday and charged with three counts of engaging in sexual conduct with an animal.

According to an arrest report, deputies were interviewing a man about a sexual battery case involving Johns. The individual denied battering Johns and instead showed deputies videos Johns sent him of herself engaging in oral sex with two pet dogs.

Johns also sexted images of the encounter to the man.

Johns is out on a $6,000 bond from the Collier County Jail.

Daniel Christenbury, spokesman for the Collier County Domestic Animal Services, said Johns does not have a record with the agency.

After his wife clobbered him in the head with a half-eaten Taco Bell Burrito Supreme, a Florida man retaliated by jamming a fork into her hand, according to cops who arrested the couple for domestic violence.

Responding to a disturbance call early Tuesday, officers encountered Suzanne Hurlvert, 51, in the Crestview home she shares with Carl Owen Smith, 66.

Hurlvert, cops noted, had a fork protruding from her right hand, but was still “relatively calm and in good spirits.” Hurlvert told investigators that she and Smith had argued about his drinking, and that the dispute turned physical.

As the couple quarreled, Hurlvert allegedly hit Smith in the back of the head with the Taco Bell burrito. Cops noted that burrito remnants were “located on the floor, scattered on the sofa, and on a lamp shade.”

After being hit with the Burrito Supreme, Smith allegedly plunged a fork into his wife’s hand (Smith had been using the utensil to consume a Taco Bell pizza). The tines were so deeply embedded in Hurlvert’s hand that the fork had to be removed at a local hospital.

Smith, who was arrested at a nearby bar, and Hurlvert were each charged with felony battery counts. They are both free on $1000 bond, according to jail records.

A North Carolina man says he was arrested for not returning a videotape cassette tape he rented 14 years ago.

James Meyers Jr., a single dad from Concord, said he was driving his 10-year-old daughter to school at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when police pulled him over for a broken brake light. Meyers gave the police officers his driver’s license and was shocked when they said there was a warrant out for his arrest for not returning a VHS rental, "Freddy Got Fingered," from 2002, he said.

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has been convicted of genocide and war crimes over the 1992-95 war, and sentenced to 40 years in jail.

UN judges in The Hague found him guilty of 10 of 11 charges, including genocide over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.

Karadzic, 70, is the most senior political figure to face judgement over the violent collapse of Yugoslavia.

His case is being seen as one of the most important war crimes trials since World War Two.

>Hillary Clinton has criticized Europe for its lagging security strategy, urging it to share the US’ “burden” in fighting global terror by creating a “new unified European border” that would facilitate improved intelligence and cross-border communication.

>Praising the US’ counterterrorism efforts, Clinton said “there is much we can do to support our European partners,” but added “there is also more they can do to share the burden with us.”

>Saying that the recent terror attacks in Brussels had exposed the need for Europe to take a “hard look at security protocols” in public places, the Democratic presidential front-runner specifically focused on two other steps that she believes the EU needs to take.

>“The most urgent task is stopping the flow of foreign fighters to and from the Middle East,” Clinton said in a 30-minute speech focused on terrorism at Stanford University on Wednesday. Referring to “young recruits” possessing dual French, British, German, or Belgian citizenship, she suggested carrying out a major overhaul of intelligence and passport control procedures.

>“Their European passports make it easier for them to cross borders and eventually return home, radicalized and battle-hardened. We need to have an identity of every fighter who makes that trip and start revoking passports and visas,” Clinton said.

Nuclear fusion needs a Wright Bros. moment for mass production.

>David Kingham, the chief executive of Tokamak Energy, has announced his company’s target of producing its first electricity by 2025 and feeding power into the grid by 2030, as well as investment from the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Harnessing the nuclear energy which powers the sun has long been touted as the ultimate solution to the challenge of powering the world while halting climate change. But, as fusion sceptics often say, the reality has stubbornly remained a decade or two away for many years.

>“If we make exciting progress relatively quickly, with relatively modest funding then we’ll get to a Wright brothers’ moment in fusion and suddenly people will realise it is going to be possible,” said Kingham, whose company is a spin off from the UK’s national fusion lab at Culham near Oxford.

>Plasmas are well understood, meaning that containing the ultra-hot gas is the major obstacle. “It is essentially an engineering and technical challenge now,” said Kingham. Copper magnets and regular superconductors, which operate at near absolute zero, require too much energy. So Tokamak Energy is using high-temperature superconductors, though these still operate at -200C.

The plasma needed for fusion energy reaches an extraordinary temperature: 100mC, hotter than the core of the sun. But Tokamak Energy’s third prototype, currently under construction, aims to reach 15mC in the next 12 months and 100mC by the end of 2017.

It seems like scientists have been "closing on target" since the 80s. Is anyone else here old enough to remember the cold fusion hoax back in the early 90s? I guess we're just now coming out of the intellectual fog caused by that.
>>
>>33417
Those are some bold claims.
>based off of JET, which produced 16MW for 1 second at a cost of 24MW
>their experimental tokamak can create a 20 second pulse but still doesn't produce more energy than it consumes
>still largely theoretical as stated on their website
>a reactor large enough to produce significant power would cost 100x more than the 15m they've raised so far
I hope it works out for them, but ITER and DEMO still look way more promising.
>>
>>33467
The media constantly overstates scientific findings and advancements. Makes for more exciting stories that way. Scientists have been making progress on it forever; it just so happens progress is slow and incremental.

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody oversold it to get more funding, but for the most part they don't need to. The media does that on its own.
