Daniel Johnston doesn't have any beautiful songs.

He's a man with severe mental problems who made low quality music to cope. He became a meme through people first ironically liking his music and then dumbasses who weren't in on the joke started writing articles on his talent.

I wish him well, and his music can still be enjoyable and can help shape the way we think about music and how to criticize it.

Johnston's music is to help him cope, and it succeeds at that. He doesn't make music for anyone but himself, and he likes what he makes. By that metric, he's good. Judge him by that, not on technical ability or a "hidden genius".

man I'm a fan of a lot of their older stuff but I tried this and couldn't believe what I was hearing. one song is literally like 3 notes on a piano recorded on a phone and looped for 20 minutes.
