How is he an idiot? The only thing I don't like about him is his cancerous fanbase. The music is good.
why does music criticism never really analyse or discuss melody when it is generally the most notable feature?
I was trying to think why it is I've never really trusted the critical elites when it comes to music, and I think it is this limited discussion of melody. At most you tend to get someone mention that an album is particularly 'melodic' without really expanding on that - which is an incredibly stupid way to describe music anyway given that most music that isn't primarily rhythmic or textural is gonna be about the melodies - and ALL pop music is.
Taking this album as an example, all the criticisms of it consistently fail to mention the glaringly obvious reason for its success. People criticise its lyrical insipidness (valid) how derivative it is of Radiohead (somewhat valid) its dullness (I mean, just calling something boring is a lazy criticism but you could make the case that these songs are not very instrumentally diverse or creative and somewhat plodding) and the fact that it's marketed at mums (irrelevant)
What is NOT mentioned is the ridiculously consistent assault of fucking great melodies from beginning to end, often complete with great songwriting buildups and climaxes towards the conclusion of several songs. How can it possibly have become acceptable to review an album like this and barely mention the melodies at all? Is this aspect of music just considered too subjective to touch upon in any real detail? If that's the case, what's the point of music journalism at all? Is it just a laziness/ignorance in the self-proclaimed critical community? Are there more objective metrics to measure melodic quality that we just skip over?
pls help, and if you hate Coldplay I understand. I was just trying to pick an album where its melodic strengths seem overlooked because of other weaknesses
WTF why is the post so fucking long?
tl:dr
>>71703679
ok anon have a nice day :(
>>71703669
Because musical critics barely actually care about music and care more about how hip or "experimental" the music is
BTW I will forever defend first two coldplay albums, they were great at making memorable melodies
Is Mew the best band that no one listens to?
>>71703666
Yes. They are my favorite band. Anytime I put them on for anyone they like them. It's a shame people don't know them.
>>71703666
No.

Seeing him tomorrow.
Is it fun?
Should I ask him if he wants to take a picture while we flex our muscles?
Don't make eye contact, only address Him by Mr Gira.
>>71703723
Is it true he's that intense? One of my friends was joking he would jump the stage just to see if Gira would fist fight him.
Don't take photos close to him cuz he WILL stop the concert and shout at you.

Your loss.
Lifehouse, if released as-intended, would have mopped the fucking floor with Smile and gone on to be the greatest single rock album of the 70s, if not of all time.
>>71703179
yeah that You and Me song is pretty alright
Did they hug it before they peed on it or after?
>>71703459
They actually never peed on it. They were perfectly willing to, but they just couldn't, so they just got some water bottles and poured them on the obelisk.
Now, why they didn't just drink the water and then pee, I have no clue.

Big indiehead here, I understand most of /mu/ is heavy metal or whatever the fuck, but I'm sort of in a music rut and need some new music.
The bands I like are Grouplove, Young the Giant, STRFKR, and Portugal the Man. Anyone got any suggestions?
