Macross isn't as sprawling a franchise as Gundam and doesn't have as many entries or different takes to wonder about. Just go in production order and try everything. If something isn't taking your fancy after a few episodes, move on. Each show builds on the previous one in a small way to make a future history, but each show assumes no familiarity with previous ones and so explains everything that's happening like to a newcomer so you're not really going to miss anything essential by skipping an entry.

Start with the TV series, SDF contains a lot more than DYRL. Keep in mind that DYRL is also worth watching as it makes significant changes to the plot and is all new animation.

Like what others have said, follow production for Macross, and feel free to skip a series if you can't get into it.

I liked 7 myself, but I can't really justify recommending it to others. I find that the much nicer later parts never really manage to compensate for the very rough start.

Tomino: Since the decesion was made by staff members who are one or two decades younger than myself, please ask them. I've prided myself on making my living creating original material, so I don't find any joy in being asked to take something from the past and "do it again. But the reason I won't do that now is because after I cleared sixty, I came to thank I should be guided by the opinions of the younger generation.

Tomino: There is that. It's a universe I created myself. Plus, because it's a world I remember as not being fully brought to fruiton, that's something I can revisit. I was able to think in that matter after making the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Movie version*(2), where I learned from experience that even if that content is already fixed, by chagining the presentation, you can change the essense. I came to understand that, out of the framework of the old project, a new version could be created. That's why when younger people brought the material to me saying, "we want you to do this," and it happened to be a universe that I created, as well as something I felt might be worth expressing, I was if anything appreciative and thought I might be forgiven if I was a little vain about it.

I love this line. It's pretty much the core essence of Tomino's philosophy and key to understanding any of his works.

Tomino doesn't get to talk about shit like proper air combat tactics or the plausible validity of a certain shape of spacecraft that can also operate in atmosphere.

The White Base is more like a 'UFO' than anything, it doesn't fly it floats using technology we do not have even in the present day

Other than the stupid fucking surfboard, I think the white base's design is the thing I dislike the most about the original gundam, it's like a sphinx.
