I just finished Symposium by Plato, after reading a few of Plato's other works.

I can't get over how talented a writer he was. I was blown away by how we wove philosophy into literature in such a delightful story. It was also interesting to learn some Greek history along the way (mainly about homosexuality in their culture), and I've really grown to like Socrates a lot, at least as a character if anything else.

Are there any other philosophers who were as good as Plato in merging philosophy with literature? Of course people like Dostoevsky get thrown into that sort of pile because their works have a heavy philosophical component, but I'm thinking of something further towards philosophy like the dialogues of Plato.

But Plato says there's nothing wrong with some homsex as long as the bottom is learning something from the top.

Drawing has the same issue. Painting not so much, you can't redo it. Learn to live with imperfection.

I generally write down a structure to follow, then I fill it and stray from the path until I start making mistakes again. Stop right there, but keep it around, go back to the drawing board and repeat.
>>
continue writing anyway, you can always go back and delete/change things after you've written a larger amount (this is the editing process, after all). Your first draft isn't supposed to be perfect or even good, but it's a lot easier to edit something terrible into something good than it is to pull something good out of thin air

1/3 of the way thru. Damn it's good. Will need to revisit later in life, but I read when I understand an allusion or reference it truly adds to the novel. How are y'all doing with this book? Have y'all finished it?

It really lives up to the hype. The first read through is pretty wild. It is said that Joyce can't be read, only re-read. Some people re-read the book once a year, and of course your understanding deepens with each pass.

Reading "The Sound and the Fury" by William Faulkner. I'm about 1/3rd of the way through, so on the 2nd "chapter." This book is extremely hard to read. There are entire pages without any punctuation at all. If I understand correctly it's largely a stream of consciousness from the characters. Am I missing something? Having a hard time processing it. Do I just need to read slower?

No spoilers please.

If it matters, I'm reading "The Corrected Text" published by Vintage International.

Have you read any faulkner before? TSATF is one of his more difficult novels, especially the first two chapters. But if you don't understand it, the best thing to do is just kinda let it wash over you and appreciate the language. The last two chapters are more straightforward, and you'll start to notice things from benjy's section coming back and starting to make sense in a way. Quentin's chapter isn't very narrative at all - it's more focused on his memories and thoughts which provide insight into his worldview, particularly his relationship with his father and Caddy. But don't worry about understanding everything, all the obfuscation is kind of the point of the novel/ modernism in general. Just try And focus on caddy and jason sr - they're both really imortant characters who are only really portrayed indirectly. If you read it again later it becomes way more clear what actually happens - there's a ton of parts that only make sense with later context

Thanks for the suggestions. I figured I might have to read it a few times to fully understand it.

Haven't read Faulkner before. Are there any others you recommend I read, as a better starting point, after I finish this one?

What's a good book about somebody working hard toward a skill, or a career, or an understanding of something technical? I'm not really sure how to phrase exactly what I'm looking for... I've always loved scenes that detail somebody hard at work or working through something over a long period of time, really just focusing in on the problem. I recently read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance and I loved the scenes where he's describing how he works on motorcycle repairs -- the serenity of mind he has, how he figures things out, feeling of relief afterward, etc. And I've always loved movies / TV scenes like this as well, e.g. in Mr Robot when Elliot is coding for the entire night and Magnus which shows the routine and focus of a legendary chess player.

I guess to be truthful I want something that'll motivate me toward working hard on things. Lately I've been pretty lazy.

What you're talking about is the flow state, and being able to drop into it is the result of years of dedicated practice and study, not some magical sequence of words that unlocks an ability.
Over time, as you discipline yourself to do a certain thing, you become able to do it for longer and longer willfully. It's no different than running. Once you get to a certain level though the need to be willful drops away.

It's when you're sufficiently into a subject that you can run entirely on intuition and the problems you have to solve are so complicated that they require an intelligence that has reached that level of dexterity and familiarity with the subject.

socratic philosophy marked the breakdown of the bicameral mind. it's notable only because the end of a golden age is only most visible at its dusk. homer catalogued it better anyway.

What is truth, /lit/ ?

Also, has any author, except Heidegger or Nietzsche, tried to destroy the scolastic conception of truth as "aedequation" ?

>>
>>9610466

you don't need to destroy it. You just need to acknowledge that complete adequation is transformation into the object of the knowledge - to the point that there is no distinction between subject and object.

May I suggest you take the Plotinus pill?
