How do I stop being pretentious? Apparently it comes off as such in my writing and my personality and I don't know why.
I'm not even that well read

Talk less, be silent, appear mysterious. Speak only if you are of superior knowledge in a given field. Deplete your dopamine so you look like an over-worked sage (so either sex, drugs or sth). Try not to spill spaghetti.

be cruel as fuck. talk down to them so hard that they don't know what hit them. approach their sensibilities and ruin them. people who say you're pretentious probably just don't fucking get it. fuck them. who do you write for anyway? you write for those losers who think that you have some sort of animosity towards those who might not agree, understand, or identify with you? fuck em. write in whatever way that's comfortable for you. polishing is fine, honing your skill is fine, but changing your entire style because some few don't like a few sneers? you have to draw the line of how far you're willing to go to change yourself for others. you might lose whatever voice you had in the process.
Self-deprecating humour
Are any of the Star Wars books good? What's canon? Are they all books for babies or are any actually well-written? The only genre books I've read are ASoIaF (fun reading, imo) and I know nothing about the SW universe or whatever, so any opinions are appreciated.

Gave zero, received zero. Merry Christmas.
Gave 0, Received 0, same as every other year except that I usually celebrate with /a/ but I lost interest in animu so I'm just aimlessly browsing 4chan and feeling like shit.
Why do you bother reading translations?
You aren't reading the original author at that point.
You aren't reading it in the original language which 'made the book'
You lose every meaningful thing in the translation as the prose is translated to a language that works completely different.
It's ridiculous to read translations and to even think you can talk about the book or even worse, think you have 'read the book' when you read some translation.
You basically read extremely shitty copy of the original book.
Why?
yeah joyce shouldnt have bothered reading homer coz he couldn't read him in the original greek lmao who cares that he created ulysses
>>7503656
So he read a shitty copy of it, lost all context and meaning outside the most superficial ones, and got inspired, so what.
He still didn't read Homer, he read some hack-job translator terrible interpretation of him
>>7503664
maybe it was superficial and shitty in the original greek and the translation was inspirational good shit
Hi /lit/ I've seen the request and share thread and ive downloaded some juicy books.

>anything translated and published by Anagrama
>>7503520
Anagrama's translation of Lolita is particularly bad.
I think that's the old version, translated by Tejedor. Tejedor was a high school teacher in Argentina, and was afraid of the reprecrusions translating something like Lolita would have, so he toned it waaay down, there are a lot of parts missing too.
If it's the new version translated by Roca it's a little bit better, but not much.
