Let's get a biography thread going! What are the best biographies and who are the best biographers?

I'm currently looking for a biography of Toussaint Louverture. Would appreciate any recommendations.

Taking some liberty with the genre classification, you may want to check George, Nicholas and Wilhelm: Three Royal Cousins and the Road to World War I, by Miranda Carter
>>
"Olivar Asselin" and "Colette" are the only biographies I have ever read.

One is about a french canadian journalist who, despte his quite advanced age and statut as a french canadian surrounded by englishmen, still rolled with it and fought on WW1. He was one of the few french canadian to actively participate in the war and most likely the reason frenchies got out of the british Commonwealth.

The other is an european author, who wrote a popular novel serie, starring Claudine, a young student who likes gay inuendos. What's interesting here is that Colette had a famous mentor for a husband, who took most of the praise though. Colette was bisexual too kek.

Should have majored in English, Literature, Great Books, or something else in Humanities. Sure, you'd have no job, but you would have the sense of personal fulfillment you now crave.

I must admit, I generally find them irrelevant in the 2010s. Stuff like On The Road, etc. they aren't too bad, but life now is very different. There are always going to be defeated / tired elements in each generation, but this stuff isn't that relevant to us now, I think.

Pic related. Probably what Jack Kerouac got used to seeing upon entering rooms, for a year after the release of On The Road.

Need help, I read a series of books a while ago but now I cant remember what they are. Basically some bad dude is going to do something to a kingdom and a hero must go find rings guarded by a dragon and each book is about each dragon. I cant remember much more about it, any help would be appreciated.

Actually just found it, Dragons of Deltora.
>>
No idea but it reminds me of Mother 3 for some reason, where you have to pull seven swords from the ground to awaken a dragon that will either destroy or fix the world depending on whether the swords are pulled by the good or the evil.

Death, be not proud is my favorite poem I've ever read. Does /lit/ have any recommendations for similar ones?

the rest of the holy sonnets obviously.

you can also read his earlier stuff which are just really cerebral/convoluted ways for donne to convince women to sleep with him, not quite in the same vein as late-life metaphysical donne

andrew marvell and george herbert are the other two big metaphysical poets.
>>

thanks anon, I'm checking out the rest of the holy sonnets right now! Any recommendations for similar stuff from a different time period too?
>>
>>7637564
depends on what aspect you're most intrigued by.

subject matter (life and death, overcoming it, etc.), try stuff like:
-On Time, milton
-When I have fears I may cease to be, keats
-Ozymandia, shelley
-Sonnet 55, 60, 73, 107, shakespeare
-Do not go gentle into that good night, and death shall have no dominion, dylan thomas

Yes. Also if you don't enjoy it's pretty self contained so you don't have to read the other three to get any feeling of completeness.

Jekyll and Hyde is a bit underwhelming, worth reading only really because of it's influence on later works
>>
>>7637308
I agree with the first comment, Jekyll and Hyde was a bit underwhelming.

Thank you for the answer

I would also like to have comment on Typhoon of Conrad

>and tell me how shitty it is?
Why do you want us to read it if it's shit? Just write something else instead.
>>
>>7636668
well by tell me how shitty it is I mean give me feedback and tell me what you think. Not that it's actually shitty, but rather that if you think it's shitty after reading it then tell me.

Has anyone here read pic related? I am very interested in reading up on the Islamic reformation movements that have been taking place in the past few decades.

Also related, what do you think of the idea that Islam today is at the same place Christianity was back in the middle ages?
32 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Reform? It's called Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Ahmadiyya, Baha'is. All a total and utter failure. Those "moderate" Muslims preaching reform are involved in Taqiyya. Muslims are low IQ people, worshipping a mass murdering pedophile that's deemed perfect and must be emulated as much and as closely as possible. He’s the source of all evil. A source that no muslims is willing to denounce.
The Christians, at least, had Jesus, the Ten Commandments and Martin Luther.

Jesus the hippie > Muhammad the rapist.

Read Islam by Maajid Nawaz and Sam Harris.
