I like him a lot. I prefer Wordsworth or Coleridge sometimes, but Byron knew how to convey feelings and sensations through rhythm and sounds.

I liked Manfred, but I prefer Don Juan, it's such a good poem. Some of his less known poems are also amazing. I recommend "The Bride of Abydos". Dem opening lines, m8.

Know ye the land where cypress and myrtle
Are emblems of deeds that are done in their clime,
Where the rage of the vulture, the love of the turtle,
Now melt into sorrow, now madden to crime?

Nigga, Byron fucked more bitches than you could ever hope to.

I like him so much for his creation of Lucipher and biblical dramas.

I understand what you mean, but not really.

I chalk it down to lacking the literary devices to tell drama in our own age (not that they don't exist), you gotta think that most stories are based around a great conflict or development, the ramifications of which aren't easy to discern when you're in the the middle of it.

All men are in some degree impressed by the face of the world; some men even to delight. This love of beauty is Taste. Others have the same love in such excess, that, not content with admiring, they seek to embody it in new forms. The creation of beauty is Art.

Alright I've been posting little bits of this over the past couple of days (I've really appreciated the feedback), here's the first draft of the opening to some hypothetical novel I may or may not be writing. I feel like it loses some steam after the description of the Bay but I can't say for sure.

Be as harsh as you want

I think we were all expecting exactly what came out of it. Pretty good description. But you have no idea what to do when it comes to conceiving a story.

A man stands on the corner of a street and he is taller than everyone else. Then he starts walking through the scenery you described.

It's a walking simulator.

it's well established that garnett was one of the best translators of Chekhov.

Hey, /lit/. I want to know if you can help me identify a term for what it is I dislike in literature, and whatever problem is making me dislike it, so that I can better explain my situation to others and find books that suit me. I supposedly read and process information as well as the average adult, at least, according to tests I've taken. However, when text is used to describe an image, I cannot use it to form one in my mind. For example, as much as I enjoyed The Lord of the Flies, there were entire segments that made no sense to me, including the final act of the book. Even brief descriptions of characters mean nothing to me. These sections just bore and confuse me, and I have to skip over them, which makes me feel awful. Ironically, I'm an English major.

I've found that there are some books lacking these elements, such as Welcome to the NHK, Happy Smekday, and Notes from the Internet Apocalypse, as well as every script of a stage play. However, I think that all three novels I mentioned were made for young readers, as I could breeze through them in one sitting.

tl;dr Armchair psychoanalyze me or someshit, I dunno.

You have bad taste that you try to justify to yourself by pretending there's something broken in your brain. To maintain this self-scam, you then need to keep your bad taste consistent, so you deliberately refuse to enjoy other things, maintaining the bad taste cycle and cutting yourself off from countless pieces of amazing literature.

That or there's actually something broken in your brain and you're a literal retard with effeminate faggot levels of inability to visualize concrete details. Actual can't-take-care-of-yourself autism.

Take your pick.

So I used to be big into writing, writing short stories and poetry and other shit, got me through English class (rarely handed my shit in), but lately I can't seem to write anything. I can't get into the world I'm trying to write. It's like I keep trying to get into their head, write their personality. Nor the environment, I have no clue what the fuck is up with me lately. Anyone dealt with this? I wanna know how to get back into it.

It introduced me to Kierkegaard and inspired me in such a way that not only did I develop a profound appreciation for girls--I read it as I began teaching high school aged students--but it also provoked a desire to start and maintain a relationship for the aesthetic potential of doing so.

The relationship went for a few months and I directed in a way that was also inspired by the diary: she initially claimed that a relationship between us was impossible but through that inspiration from the diary, I developed in her a love for me that bordered on madness. Eventually I moved it in a direction that gave her no option but to end it without being able to reproach me for bringing it to an end. I kept a journal during those months and the entries are something I am incredibly satisfied with. All thanks to Kierkegaard.

Why are fucking readers so fucking fickle? When I write simply, they fucking accuse me of telling rather than showing. When I do "show, don't tell", they fucking complain of purple prose. When I start writing simply again, they start complaining that I'm writing brown prose.

Fuck this bullshit, readers should be sent to a goddamn gulag and be repeatedly hit with rifle butts until they learn to appreciate my work.

Don't give me "balance" and "moderation" bullshit, what the fuck do they want? Do they want vivid, beautiful worlds or a thrilling, "zippy" experience?

On average, do readers prefer purple prose or telling?

Fucking reader-niggers.

Folks, sorry about this /r/ post, but I don't come here often. Maybe we can make this a 'qtddtot' thread.

I am looking for a particular non-fiction (self-help?) book. It could be about stoicism or meditation or something related.

It starts with asking the reader what they want *out of* life and how it is different from they wanting something *in* life.

Unfortunately, this is all the information I have. =/

Somehow I get the feeling you are talking about some kind of Shoppy for dummies, but that sounds beyond stupid.

I read this book, an excellent novella, earlier this week and I can't stop thinking about it. Did Santiago actually do it? Ambiguous endings are usually pretty lame, same with first person narratives, but you could tell from the get go you'd never get a straight answer. It was so well executed on both fronts.

I personally think he did. Seems just like every other small town where everyone is sleeping with each other surreptitiously, while they occupy a higher morality in public.

This Was my first gabo, I picked it up at a used bookstore last week. Are his longer works just as good or better? I might read it again soon because it's so short. I'll definitely be reading more of his work.

Looking for Beat novels . . .

. . . any recommendations that aren't Kerouac, Burroughs, or Pynchon?

First and foremost-- Trout Fishing in America by Richard Brautigan. The beats didn't like him (Ginsberg hated him), but Ferlinghetti did.

Also the Western Lands by Burroughs. It's his last work and unlike his others, whilst being a synthesis of them all. I'd still recommend even though I think the rest he has is trash.
