Anyone read this? What did you think?

I liked American Rust more.

I'll check it out. Might go for another western first, Butcher's Crossing has caught my eye.
From what I remember, /lit/ tends to hate self-inserts.
Is this true?
If so, why? Why is it you hate self-inserts?
If you discovered that the MC in a novel you enjoyed was a self-insert, would it change your opinion on either the work or on the idea of self-inserts in general?
I'm aware that a lot of teenagers are all Ayy Lmao about it and think they're special so they use a SI and it makes the story boring as fuck.
But honestly, this is like saying all books are bad because Twilight was published.
Some enlightenment?
Do you mean self-insert or author-insert?
>>7794885
The author making the Main Character himself, writing himself into the story. I'm not sure of the nuance between the two things you said.
>>7794897
Ok. When I hear self-insert, I think reader insert, which is sure to be pandering wish-fulfillment escapist trash.
Author insert can be that too but if you refused to reading anything semi-autobiographical you'd be missing out on a shit ton of great novels.
Anybody here who has actually read this meme author ? If so is he any good and wich book do you recommend ?
>>7794879
I've read him and incorporated his ideas in a lot of my literary analyses.
Read Men Among the Ruins if you want a good grasp of his general ideas.
>>7794890
Thanks for answering , i'll add it to my list if i can find a decent translation since i don't speak italian .
Ride the Tiger is interesting.
I've only read a translation, however.
Thoughts on this? wiki claims it's autobiographical but I remember one of the stories was proven false. Is this worth reading for comedy?
read it awhile ago when it came out, thought it was funny at the time but I remember maybe two scenes from the whole book, I remember fairly large typefont and spacing, nothing else.
I'm considering picking it up again if anything to philosophize about the empty musings of a drunken brodude, but is the book authentically debauched or is it all a guise for shills?
Kill yourself.

Once I got past the reddit factor. There was a few good stories.
'Mr Grabs' was good
I'm finding that I've started to refrain from having opinions or confidence in my knowledge because I'm now used to having my conceptions destroyed since I began reading regularly.
I dont have any convictions because I know there are books out there that will convince me otherwise. I feel prepared to let go of anything I believe at a moments notice.
Is this just a phase? I look back on how dumb I was a few years ago compared to now, and I imagine it will be the same in the future so I get instantly discouraged and constantly worry that I am unaware of the extent of my ignorance. Is this relateable at all?
>>7794769
No, because I've thought of things in this way since I was like, 14. You should get used to deriving confidence from your willingness to adapt and see things from as many perspective as you can, rather than from the idea of cocksure certainty. That way you will actually be stronger than the ignorant, and this is a good thing.
Its better to keep your knowledge fluid, people who /think/ they know everything are the ones that easily trap themselves in bullshit.

Fiverr. Be prepared to cough up some coin, you'll have bad luck finding someone to do it on such short notice.
post topic. I'll do it right now. Dead serious
>author is ugly

Dropped like a cold fish.
>author is female

best books on aliens?
or should I be asking /x/?
non-fiction or literary fiction is fine, no scifi junk tho, thanks.
>inb4 nonbelievers greentext part of my OP in an attempt to ridicule
Solaris maybe? It's the source material for one of the best films ever created, but it's also sci-fi so idk. I don't know what you mean by a fiction novel on aliens that isn't science fiction.
Galactic Pot Healer
War of the Worlds
Barsoom
Off the top of my head..
>>7794690
Thanks for the suggestions. I've read and enjoyed all of those but Barsoom but I guess I wasn't specific enough...
I'm looking for, I guess, realist fiction about aliens or the possibility of aliens, if not good non-fiction. I am interested in the possibility of aliens in our world, ya dig?

A lifetime isn't enough to learn even the most rudimentary things about life, our world and its history. I need at least a millennium.

Evening, friendos. Lately I've been toying with the idea of scouring the net and retrieving every DFW non-fiction essay of note, editing the typeface to make it slightly more presentable, compile each one into individual pdf files, and then making a mediafire file for the collected folder and distribute it on /lit/. I think this is very doable, the only problem is I have no idea where to obtain a cohesive list of everything DFW ever wrote/published. The below links seems like a good place to start but I'm unsure as to which direction to go proceed in after that. Any help would be appreciated.

On another note, DFW's non-fiction is a million times better than anything else he wrote, why don't you guys talk about it more?
the roger federer essay is a masterpiece

What are some books that take place over a very short time frame, along the lines of catcher in the rye, I find them super comfy.
Ulysses.
The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker
>>7794457
This wins. Can't think of a novel that takes place in any shorter time frame than one escalator ride.
I certainly think so
Truly the episode it was inspired from has been haunting me for years, and I think about its images at least once a month.
