How much knowledge of philosophy is required to really get into literature?
>>7796950
about 7 or eight knowledge
zero
Depends on the literature. I know that answer isn't particularly useful, but it's the only one I can give, unless you wish to elaborate.
Probably a long shot, but do anyone knows where to buy books in english in mexico city? i only know pic related but the selection is too small.

Is there a specialized bookstore for learning foreign languages or medical books. I live in Guadalajara and we have Sandy's where they have a decent catalog but you can also ask them to bring anything from across the ocean or the states.

Hey, armchair philosophers of /lit/.
I'm really curious about the idea of determinism. I know nothing whatsoever about philosophy really, but I've found it impossible to rationalize the idea of free will.
I was wondering if any of you could steer me in the direction of pro-free will arguments and more advanced arguments for determinism. Sorry in advance for the cancerous pic.

What are some good atheist/agnostic arguments against religion? I'm a Muslim so preferably something that challenges Islam, or Abrahamic religions in general.
Not a fan of the new atheists like Sam Harris, Hitchens or Dawkins since their arguments are usually based on extremism rather than faith itself and morality. Who were they influenced by and what were their notable works?
If God Is So Smart, Why Do We Fart? -- Scott Adams (genius), The Religion War
nice bate mudslim fag, /pol/ is the other way
How are you an atheist and a Muslim at the same time?
I want to start reading books, but I have no idea where to get them from. Paying for them is out of the question, and I can't find most of them on torrent sites.
You should try this hot new thing called a library with your broke ass
...what books are you trying to read? if you'r ejust starting to read i can't imagine there are many super obscure books that you can't find online with relative ease

I have literally no idea what to read so I just looked in some threads and found one that looked pretty interesting although I cant' find it on tpb
How is your editing process? What do you do when you face a first draft?
Procrastinate
Get drunk, get high, open word, get distracted, get more drunk, get higher, close word, do something else.
I print it and read it with a red pen, underlining and annotating anything that can be corrected

Finished this recently. Thought it was great but I still preferred The Third Policeman.
Thoughts?
I managed to grasp this book a little bit better than The Third Policeman, that one was just fucking bonkers. This one you can freshen up your celtic mythology and somewhat make sense of it. It's also one of those books every wannabe writer should read.
Some fantastic and witty meta-fiction writing here, aside from the occasional segment composed of Epic Irish poetry, which tends to drag. At just over 200 pages I thought it was a great light read.

I dont see how people struggled more so with TTP, this book is far more layered.
The pookah was top tier
I just finished reading this in a quick two day stretch. Absolutely loved every word of it. I can't think of one negative thing to say.
What are some other /lit/ approved books that can be read over the expanse of a few days?
I read this book because I had heard so many good things about it, but at the end I found myself saying "that's it?". It felt like a whole bunch of not much in particular going on. What am I supposed to get out of it? If anyone can tell me, I'd genuinely appreciate it.

How long does it take to go from complete beginner in writing to competent writer.

>Still shitty but ok I guess for amateur
Please don't tell me it takes 5 years too.
My grammar is absolutely horrid as well as thinking of ideas.

While you won't get any better at drawing simply by having spent your life looking at things with your eyes before you put pencil to paper, if you spend a significant amount of your life reading (preferably a broad variety of books), you'll have a huge head start on writing. While it also depends on your level of emotional maturity, by applying yourself with a little critical thinking, you can write competently pretty much straight away.
The artist needs to learn how hard to press, what pencil stokes to make, how to mix colours, how to arrange composition, thickness of line, colour balance, perspective and so many things that aren't generally innate.
Everybody already knows how to communicate as you speak and write in daily life. Somebody who is well read knows what makes a good sentence, what makes a good character, what makes a good story. It's already in there. You just have to start typing.
