Why is reading literature shoved down my throat by lit and the media and "educated society" as something I have to do or else I'm a stupid and bad person? It seems like a marketing gimmick to me. If I sat and read all day then I'd have no money. But society wants me to use my limited free time to read while telling me that it makes me a more valuable person.
As if "muh human condition" has to be learnt from books written by the same sections of society (the ones with access to the media-publishing-academia industrial complex). (inb4 /lit/ moves the goalposts about why they read books)
It seems like a big scam to me. lit is a bunch of delusional people who want to venerate literature and publishing companies either to gain pseudo intellectual cred or in the vain hope that they'll be published one day.
Also many novels are exercises in narcissism or self indulgence by the author. But because it's packaged and distributed by a publisher then I am supposed to care or else I'm dumb. What if I don't give a shit about Dostoevsky's spiritual or moral views? Hume already showed that none of it is based on logic (see the Münchhausen trilemma). Anyone can choose the axioms they want.
oo boy
neck yourself
Society 1billion percent would rather you not read.
The return on big Mac's soda, sports, action hero movies and vidya is much higher.
Ideally you work until you almost pass out, go to a restaurant watch the game and spend all your money, go home jerk off to cuck porn, watch tv and play vidya until your to tired to think when you go to bed, collapse, wake, and repeat.
This book is pretty funny actually

I get a really normal, modernist girl vibe from her. Perhaps Plath herself lived to extremes, yet to me she reflects the presence of the feminine that has come to understand and leverage itself to enunciate what is thrust upon it, what it also interprets and constructs (perhaps, only through associations, as she was mainly a poet). I must admit, I see her as a personage more than a genuine poet (though, obviously, she is one of the greatest poets of her generation), primarily because of her tragic death which is generally one of the only students learn about her.
I read The Bell Jar years back, it was an enjoyable book that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of poets writing novels as well.

A boy falls in love with a girl.
Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl’s phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day’s confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

From the sticky: " Philosophical discussion can go on either /lit/ or /his/, but ideally those discussions of philosophy that take place on /lit/ should be based around specific philosophical works to which posters can refer."
This is a list of "specific philosophical works", so is a perfect topic for /lit/.
ITT: give the opening line, sentence or passage of the book/story you're working on.
"It is often said that history is written by the victor; now, I'm not entirely sure who this victor chap is but I can assure you that he left out quite a bit - perhaps he was demented, or a little crippled boy."
If I read that opening line in a book id just opened, I would frisbee the book out my window so fucking hard my wrist would ache afterwards

I've only heard of pelevin, prelepin and sorokin
I want something less sci-fi though
>>8070884
Russians forgot how to write after the fall of the USSR, its like Rome in the dark ages now
>>8070893
he's right, unfortunatelly
>>8070893
that's kind of wrong, nothing really good came out of russia post-khrushchev until the fall of the soviet union
the writers I listen above are all pretty good
russia also produced an incredible amount of good poets in the post-soviet era
What are the main arguments against despooked egoism?
>>8070238
The ego itself is a spook
Read Plato's Gorgias.
>>8070240
How? And what wouldn't be a spook, in that case -- or is that the point?
So, I'm going to start this off by separating the discussion into two sections
1.) Economics Literature - books more focused on economic history and theory rather
Ex.) The Alchemists, The Bazaar, Why Europe Grew Rich and Asia did not, etc
2.) Economic Philosophy - Marx and the like breaching into the philosophic side of things
Now, what are good pieces of literature from both categories regardless of political affiliation? I want to broaden my knowledge and understanding of this field, as it may one day become a career for me, and frankly the topic intrigues me a lot, so, recommendations?
You should start with Adam Smith and David Ricardo, the OG modern political economists. They are the reason the west is so rich today.
