Russian here. You can find lots of good non-fiction books that are good, yet fiction is doing poor right now. Best you can find is some diary type written novels retrospecting the old life. You have to take into account that Russia is still in the rehabilitation and it will take 20-30 years for contemporary works to have full power

Matwey Ganapolsky and Maria Arbatova are among the famous, under the spotlight writers. They write what is essentially journalistic essay's about today's life, politics and media. They do give a lot of orientation about what's happening in Russia today, but you might get a chilling sensation of reading a blog in form of a book. I prefer now works like Konyaev who not so long ago published a huge book about Romanovs (Russian's monarchy dynasty) called 'A path to Holiness' It's as huge as a bible, very well written and is based on researches of all the previous historians. And in recent times a lot of books like this on history are being published.

There are also smaller type novels that deal with topic of bad teenagers, bad livelihood, bad everything - they are fun to read sometimes, but those writers obviously could do better. And also a lot of mediocre liberal crap.

I'm also sure you won't find any of this stuff translated into english
