Someone is selling me their copy of the Romance of Three Kingdoms, is pic related the correct version to buy or is there a better version out there?

it's the best one in english yes.

I heard there was a 5 volume set that's really expensive, is that worth investing in or is the 4 volume set fine for the average reader?
>>
>>8184592

not familiar but this one is more than sufficient for the typical english reader. there's also a recent one from Tuttle that i heard was good.

as far as i know all other translations are either incomplete or old and superseded by this one.

Thoughts?

I enjoyed the first two movies mainly for the visual symbolism and artistic macabre, for me the plot gets in the way pretty heavily in the second film. Does the book suffer from the same problem?

Book is the first film but with different character dynamics. Daughter from the movie is a nosy neighbor with a crush in the book - still the protagonist. If you read weird subtext into the movie's dialogue it's because the character relationships were changed but the dialogue remained direct from the source. Some other plot details are just the same. "Pinhead" and fellow Cenobites are more scary in the books if you haven't seen the movie, because more is either left to the imagination or more nutty details are described than in the movie series.

It's acutally "more important," not "importanter."

One of the many oddities of the English language!

could Gene Wolfe's Book of The New Sun be filmed? who should be the director? who should play Severian?

I feel it could be made into an amazing film trilogy if made by the right people, which would obviously never happen. Even the odds of it being filmed are minimal, which is a shame because it's an amazing novel with a very well built world and lore.

Yes, that guy who directed the Warcraft movie, that guy who plays Jon Snow.
>>
>>8184044

the road to be filmed how it was set by the witcher it's to have a successful game made after it first (:

also who knows what they film in the future

p.s. though the witcher apparently was filmed in poland way back too, before the game was made, i bet it was a shitty movie
>>
James Franco should direct it and should play all the characters except for a few who will be played by Jonah Hill Seth Rogen and Zac Efron

The dominant institutions of 20th century American literature, and culture in general, where created by the CIA in order to wage subliminal warfare on behalf of the american ruling class, given the US victory in the cold war and the universalisation of american culture, is it possible to create meaningful art or have our minds already been bent in such a way that what we think is creativity will always be a reproduction of the american ideology?

Everything in the culture argues against the novel, particularly the novel that tries to be equal to the complexities and excesses of the culture. This is why books such as JR and Harlot’s Ghost and Gravity’s Rainbow and The Public Burning are important—to name just four. They offer many pleasures without making concessions to the middle-range reader, and they absorb and incorporate the culture instead of catering to it.

These books and writers show us that the novel is still spacious enough and brave enough to encompass enormous areas of experience. We have a rich literature. But sometimes it’s a literature too ready to be neutralized, to be incorporated into the ambient noise. This is why we need the writer in opposition, the novelist who writes against power, who writes against the corporation or the state or the whole apparatus of assimilation. We’re all one beat away from becoming elevator music.

The CIA is a bureaucracy that is given far too much credit, based purely off of its bumbling handling of some muddled assassinations in the 70s and its shitty handling of MKULTRA. It is a denuded organization that has been usurped by the NSA and has not and does not greatly effect American culture, except for a mythology propagated by tinfoilers.

Hey /lit/. I have a problem that I'm sure at least someone here has gone through: I can't fucking concentrate when reading.

I wanted to start reading The Crying of Lot 49, but my mind kept wandering every few sentences. It's not even trouble in understanding, it just seems to be impossible for me to keep focused on what I'm reading. I've read somewhat constantly throughout my life, but I have noticed that it's getting harder and harder for me to keep interested in what I'm reading. I don't have any particularly distracting habits I mean, shit, I don't even own a smartphone for that reason.

So, I wanted some suggestions: for those of you that have gone through something similar, what did you do to get better?

I was thinking that maybe I could start reading short novellas and build up from there; stuff that is not really attention-demanding (think about Vonnegut or Murakami, simple stuff). Do you have any suggestions? I don't want to go full samsara and start all the way back to the beginning with LOTR and Huckleberry Finn.

Yeah, I know. But to be honest, this is basically the only website I waste my time on. Usually I browse a few threads on sci and sometimes here, but that's it. I don't know if there would be a considerable impact if I cut off 4chan completely, I guess I could try it for a few weeks.

Good an evil is a measurement, much like math. It's applied to whatever it's measured, the same as me saying "I have two apples, I add another apple and I have 3". I use math, the same way that people apply good and bad to other people. However, good and evil is just a concept, break a human down to a molecular level and it's not broken into good and evil, because good and evil only exists as a concept. Take away these arbitrary notions (which change from culture to culture and person to person) and we can start looking at why people behave the way they do, instead of asserting arbitrary measurements of our approval of their actions.

tl:dr - good and evil doesn't exist.
