Jewish devil: tool of God
Christian devil: Fallen archangel
Islamic devil: Jealous djinn

From a purely literary standpoint, which is more interesting to you?

In what way is the Jewish devil a tool of God?
I'm sorry, not familiar with it...
>>
>>9102254

In Judaism, Satan is used more as a tool to test mankind because they think the idea of an adversary to God. The Jewish reading of a book like Job is very different than the usual Christian reading.

Is there any scientific or rational reason to believe in reincarnation?

If you're a physichalist/materialist: all consciousness is the arrangement of matter, so it is not unreasonable for your consciousness to manifest over and over again in a long enough time frame.

Idealist: There's no reason to believe the mind/body relation occurs solely once, outside of Abrahamic religions I suppose.

Has anyone here read this book?
What do you think of it?
How does it compare to Barth's other work?

I'm currently reading it (because of my love for his other works: The Sot-Weed Factor, The End of the Road, etc.) and am enjoying it. Am I supposed to be confused for the first couple reels?

I got like 200ish pages before putting it on the shelf

I liked it for the most part, and the premise was funny and interesting, but it moved at an agonizingly slow pace.

I also felt it was really hammering in that "university is the universe" idea to a point of annoyance.

By page 150 I felt like I already got the point, and wasn't happy with the 600 pages left.

Luckily so few events happened in those 200 pages that I feel I can pick up at any time and start from that point again without a problem

https://www.goodreads.com/read_statuses/1156327848#comment_145737065 I also felt this was incredibly helpful in powering through those first few reels
>>
>>9102028
Thanks Anon, for some reason I've found it difficult to find resources online for this novel so I appreciate the link.

Out of curiosity did you like the rest of Barth's work, and this was a lone dud? Or did you dislike all you've read/this is the only one you've read?
>>
>>9102028
Wait so how did someone figure all this out?
Is it from context? (I haven't read it, but how would they get the jocasta?)

Can I get into literature (for fun, as a hobby I don't search to be an intellectual) without reading doorstoppers? What are some good contemprary books/authors that are /lit/ approved?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>9101923
there are no contemporary ones because their primarily women or liberals i.e. john green and zadie smith.

We approve of Moldbug, Nick Land, Elliot Rodger, Milo and other such redpilled thinkers

I did a little chamber play of shakespeare at home with friends. Nothing serious, we didn't even learn it, we were just drinking, having fun and passing the text around, it was great and we'd like to do more.

I've never read any drama though. Could you recommend me some good/essential plays and playwrights? Prefferably some that are common enough to find in a larger local book store.

Another question, I have browsed the drama section in a small bookstore I visit and found Star Wars plays written in style of Shakespear, I've only read a little bit but it didn't seem half bad at a first glance. Is it just a meme or is it actually good?

>>
>>9101876
I'm honestly jelly. I don't have any friends that would do that with me for fun.
>>
>>9101876
Ye we probably are, only fags are allowed to have fun after all.

>>9101889
It came about pretty naturally. I was reading some shakespeare I just bought in the kitchen while waiting for my pasta to cook (dorms so shared kitchen), a friend came in to cook and we talked about books, she wanted to read a bit so I gave her the book and she read it aloud with and overexaggerated posh voice and I just went with it and read the next part and we had fun and did like a couple pages worth of dialogue with shitty acting(neither of us took any acting classes or drama clubs) and funny/cringy voices. So we decided to invite some friends who we thought might be into it and do a fun home-play, we did midsummer nights dream since that has a pretty retarded plot by itself and it was nothing serious we were joking around, exaggerating everything, drinking etc. But we all enjoyed it and everyone was up for doing it again even if it was something more serious.

Is this one the same level as The Decameron, Canterbury Tales, etc.?

Easily. Structured differently but it is still a collection of stories. Though the Decameron is still the most /lit/ of the bunch
>>
more sexy than canterbury and less judgy than decameron. best translation too if they kept his notes about sex practices.
