Is it true that I have to read Hume first before I even dare to tackle Kant? And if so, what specific works by him will I have to read? Are the Treatise and The Inquiry into Human Understanding going to be enough?
I'd say a good 10-pages encyclopedia article about Hume is enough, but /lit/bards are gonna get mad at me for that.
If you decide to read some Hume, the Inquiry into human understanding is probably enough, even if you'll only grasp the relation Hume-Kant through one point of view (causality). There are other relevant points of view (regarding the self, morality, etc.), but the Treatise is long and contains a few brilliant pages among hundreds of other pages that can be skipped (if you mainly aim at reading Kant).

It's not 'strictly' necessary, but it is going to make it quite a bit easier to good into Kant if you know your basic early modern empiricism and rationalism, exemplified in Hume/Locke and Descartes/Leibniz. I would say that Hume's inquiry would be sufficient enough.

That is opportunity cost

But I'd still rather shitpost than write genre fiction.
Time spent enjoying oneself > time earning money.
What are some books that will make you sad? Not depressed but just sad. Example. Never let me go and the remains of the day will make you sad. Journey to the end of night, although hilarious might make you depressed. It sure depressed the shit out of me.
17thc English lyric poetry in general makes me sad. Perhaps because it's so remote, superannuated, done

His magnum opus. The end of the 3rd book and the 4th book.
Smellin' My Balls While I'm Takin' a Shit, by Arthur SChopenhauer
>see reading as fulfilling and virtuous
>read a lot of books, including classics
>realise that I'm just a consumerwhore and i should have learnt to produce something
>realise the writer of one shitty YA book is worth more than someone who reads every book in the western canon 50 times
>turn on the radio and hear dumb pop stars who are worth more than me
If you are going to listen to pop music at least listen to the beach boys or whatever
So why don't you write something then?
I'd also argue that reading the canon *is* part of learning to produce something.
Do people on /lit/ have opinions about this guy?
I found his non fiction / autobiographical stuff to be interesting. Namely Prometheus Rising and Cosmic Trigger. The trans-humanism and space colonization stuff didn't age well but his commentary on psychology, consciousness, psychedelics, and mind-programming/brainwashing still seems relevant.
Was never able to get through his fiction.

To be fair, he got that from Leary.
Very little of Wilson's material is original, but he was truly a master synthesist. Reading him will always lead you on to obscure and fascinating lines of research.
Why was he so obsessed with the unnatural and the unknown? Has his works elucidated our understanding, or at least the inchoate conception, of the unknowable? I am not too familiar with his works or any of this sort.

Cats, tentacles, and niggers.
Houellebecq has a good book on it. Joshi is the major Lovecraft scholar.
He read a lot of weird fiction too. Dunsany and MR. James and stuff.

Is there any point in reading Ulysses outside of University studies? I mean, is it worth the "general reader's" time to work through it? They say Ulysses is more often discussed than read.
I've read Dubliners and A Portrait. I enjoyed them both, Portrait more so. I wonder if I should just be done with Joyce at this point because Ulysses seems so daunting, it is a lot different from his first two.

The point it that's it's a beautiful novel that's very skillful but also very funny and moving. But it's not a novel you read once and then forget about, so readers who just want to be easily distracted for a few hours won't get much out of it. You will have to reread it over your life, doing some research and spending some time doing close reading to reap it's rewards.
Also here's a helpful podcast:

give it a shot! even if most of the allusions go over your head (as they do with everyone) you'll enjoy it greatly and will revisit it again and again throughout your life.
No good author ever wrote a novel thinking "gee whiz I can't wait for only college kids to read this in 100 years"

On the bus,
I wanna cus.
Take a swing,
ding-a-ling.
Round the Lake,
wake-n-bake.
Have a trip,
damn I slip.
Get on up;
some chick says, 'sup';
hands me a cup.
Says it's coffee;
taste it--hardly!
Whoa man!
this ain't the plan.
Damn, I fall.
How'd I get in this hall?
And why've I got a ball?
Balls:
two of them,
swollen as fuck,
dying for luck.
But I ain't got a buck,
nor can I see through this muck.
Sometimes I wish I were a duck!
