>>”Ibrahim’s harem was full of young, nubile, girls from around the world. But after a while, the slender things from Russia and the Balkans didn’t do it for him anymore. One day Ibrahim happened to see the genitalia of a female cow. Pleased by what he saw, Ibrahim had a gold cast made and, hoping to find a human match to the bovine privates, he ordered his aides to “bring him the fattest woman in the world.” They did their best, finding a 300 pound Armenian girl named “Sugar Cube” (Sechir Para or more literally translated “Sweet Lump of Sugar”). Ibrahim loved her, and spent many a night curled in her large arms. It wasn’t long until the big woman had gained power over Ibrahim equal only to that of her girth. It would be Sugar Cube who would spell the final downfall of Ibrahim the Mad.”

Was he /ourguy/?

Realistically, even if Yamaguchi was allowed to launch an immediate strike, the best case I can foresee is that they sink the Yorktown in one go. That still leaves the problem that the Japs don't know where Hornet and Enterprise are, and even if they did find them, how could Hiryu's aircraft alone have managed to sink one of them?

I think the only hope of changing the scoreboard would have been for Soryu and Hiryu to sink the Yorktown with a single strike, then for Hiryu to retreat after the other 3 carriers are sunk. I'm assuming that's practical and the Americans don't just hunt it down and sink it anyway - it may not be, I'm not sure.

If it went that way, they'd have 1 more carrier than historically, which would not have changed the war at all, and would still lose the battle. However, Hiryu's presence may have had tactical value at Guadalcanal.

iirc the Japs were real close to winning midway

I mean like what USA failed 3 waves or so with the last one catching the zeros on deck and sinking all but the Hiryu.

Plus Japanese recon had some huge issues

The Akagi was essentially sunk with a single fortuitous bomb

Two of the SBD strike groups that deal the three carrier blow only found the Japanese by following the wake of a destroyer delayed by an American submarine

And even just being up a single carrier would be critical for Japan in the coming months, where for about a year at one point the United States only had a single aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Guadalcanal would indeed be very different. Of course the Japanese would still lose in the end, but maybe a year later.
>>
>>3118422
According to the Japanese official records on Akagi it was two bombs and a near miss. So Dick Best believing that his two wingman helped may not be wrong after all!

I think Germanic languages look very nice, and I enjoy the word compounds. Latin and its bastardizations (particularly French) are vastly overrated, though I appreciate their contribution to English.

Within a Judeo-Christian point of view, why did God create (sub-Saharan) Africa and Africans?

It's a place full of disease, war, poverty, crime, misery. The people in Africa suffer tremendously and, when they die, most go to Hell simply because they were never Christian. Not because they refused Christianity at any point, but because they never could have the chance to choose Christianity. They are born in regions where there is religious repression, where Christians are hunted, where missionaries never went, where families force you to follow animism/Islam, etc. In a way, God created these people knowing they'd live a life full of misery and on top of it He makes it in a way they can't even possibly know of Christianity. And then punishes them for being created. Like, what the fuck. Just think about it.

Not exactly what you'd expect from a benevolent God.

Most people dont believe in their scientific and political views because they have reached those views through a complex analysis, but rather because the rest of the community the person is part of believes in said views.

Would Cato have supported the Gracchi Brothers?

He was a staunch aristocrat, but he was a lover of all things agricultural and traditional. surely he would be smart enough to see that the roman yeoman farmer-soldier was the backbone of the Republic? Or would he have joined in with his fellow patricians and squeezed the peasantry dry out of greed?

any thoughts? would have been a heck of a timeline.

well he wrote de agricultura and and a lot of other works now lost.

He seems someone who, despite his extreme traditional and reactionary leanings, liked the average roman commoner more than the patrician class to which he belonged. sort of like tories in the 18th century when whiggism was wiping out the commons and sending children to work in the mines, all in the name of progress.

anyway, anyone else something to say?

Were the americans pretty much in the war already when they supplied arms to the UK, france and soviet union in early 1941 and would have inevitably had to fight nazi germany even if pearl harbor didn't happen where germany declared war on the US? So when Churchill talks about how he was so relieved when pearl harbor was attacked, because it meant the US would have to enter the war, that was all bullshit because it would have happened anyawy since they were alread supplying arms to the allies?
Also, just how extensive were these armament contributions?

Why would the USA be supplying the Vichy Regime and what makes you think the USSR were receiving supplies before the USSR was even in the war?
>>
>>3117997
>Vichy Regime
Who said anything about the Vichy Regime? The supplies were going to the exile government led by de Gaulle.
>what makes you think the USSR were receiving supplies before the USSR was even in the war?
Naturally they weren't all supplied at the same time. Supplies to Britain started in March of 41, and supplies to the soviets after operation Barbarossa had started in june. Still leaves you a good 5-6 months before pearl harbor happens in the soviet case, and almost a year of supplies to britain.

The supplies sent before the US entered the war were fairly limited, as they were having to work around limitations set by Congress. Most of the pre-'42 aircraft they received from America would not be Lend-Lease but aircraft ordered before the war by the Anglo-French purchasing commission.

Lend Lease officially became law in March 1941, but it took until 1942 for it to really ramp up. The contribution to the Soviet War effort is always controversial. What I've read seems to show that most Lend Lease weapons didn't make it to the front until the Kuban Campaign in the immediate aftermath of Stalingrad. You had a few Hurricanes or P-40s flying a bit earlier, but planes like P-39s didn't make a showing until 1943.

Although the weapons get all the attention, the real contribution Lend Lease made to the Soviet war effort was logistics and strategic materials. Lend Lease supplied the Soviets with thousands of trucks, train cars, and locomotives. Strategic materials like steel, clothes, and food were also major components of the aid.

The general idea of this focus was that it's better for the recipient to get logistic and material support but letting them continue to create their own weapons, as they already know how to use them. In the case of the Soviets, it also helped that we were weary of giving them our top of the line equipment.
