Because the intellectual foundation work of any movement takes on the role of and becomes part of its intelligentsia, even if they don't wear tweed jackets with leather elbow patches.

People believe the things they like, simple as that. Barely anyone, possibly no-one, believes things because they've honestly examined as much data as they can and come to an objective conclusion, not least because the amount of research you would have to do on every single trivial thing would be totally impossible to carry out.
