How were your history teachers back in school, /his/? Were they cool and helped in developing your interest in history or were they complete shit?
I remember mine, he had a wicked sense of humour. He'd always wave his arms around, going completely mental. Especially when someone answered with a stupid answer to his questions. Died from cancer in 2011
I had a few, they were very good, I owe a lot to them.
One of them just died last week :'(((
Mine was a bit weird. He was about 50 and spoke to us as we were 9 year olds. I love how he compared the relationship between France and Germany in the 19th century as two kids in the school yard.

Pretty bad, by and large, to be honest.
I learned maybe 95% of my historical knowledge by getting into some wargame, then reading up about the period.
What books have had the greatest impact on the world?

As it turns out, when you have insane foreign policy goals, it's difficult to find allies.
Global rule #3.
Is military history a waste of time if you aren't an actual officer or a vidya playing dweeb?
History as a whole is basically a waste of time
>Is history a waste of time if you aren't an actual historian or a high school history teacher?
Is history a waste of time if you have no real influence on anything?
Yet it its.
But then again, everything is a wast of time.

Why does it seem that interest on the Pacific/ China theater is so overlooked? And discussion of it almost always dissolves into a dick measuring contest against any other country?
>>272059
Because Americans don't realize or care that the war was more than Pearl Harbor, Midway, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and other island hopping campaigns, and the Brits don't realize or care that the war was more than Burma and Singapore.
>Why does it seem that interest on the Pacific/ China theater is so overlooked
Weeaboos want to ignore it, and non-weeaboos don't care about Japan.
> And discussion of it almost always dissolves into a dick measuring contest against any other country?
Disrupts their existing narratives.
You know what I would fucking LOVE? Someone needs to write a book looking at non-Japanese participation in the IJA and role in war crimes seriously, and through the participants perspective.

because it had horrible balance

Hungary is a pretty interesting country. Under the Anjou, they clearly were one of the most powerful country in Europe, under Matthias, they successfuly defeated Austria. Yet, despite those periods, it seems to me Hungary failed to create a real centralized government like France and England did. This is really interesting and I'd like to know more.
They were one of the few european powers that managed to win clear victories against the Ottomans during their expansion.
>>272029
Matthias was a successful ruler, but he failed to secure a dynasty, leading to the disorganisation of power.
He only scored a few minor victories against the Turks. Luckily for him the Ottoman Empire was not focused on Europe this time.
The first and only great victory belongs to his father, who stopped a major Ottoman army in 1456 at Belgrad. This set them back by a few decades, but they came again in 1526, beaten the army of Hungary, and taken much of the country in 1541.
Also, I'm a Hungarian historyfag. You can ask me something if you like.
>>272199
Why didn't the Ottomans take over in 1526 after winning?
>>272199
I have been looking around for this for a while now, but I've had no luck finding anything directly pertaining to this:
Other then irredentism, what solutions did Magyars come up with to finding themselves in other states?
Has Magyar ever been a 'flexible' identity, that allows for overlap with Austrian, Yugoslav, Serbian, Romanian, Slovak, Soviet, etc.?
How connected were people living in Hungary to Magyars living outside of Hungary, socially and culturally? Especially under the communist regime, was it hard to communicate with family members outside the borders, or read Magyar language publications from elsewhere in Eastern Europe?
What's your opinion on this great unsung hero? Why is his name mentioned way less in the history books than the names of Lorenzo De Medici or Ludovico Il Moro? He could have united Italy more than 300 years before the Savoia's with a little more luck on his side! Let's discuss the greatest hero of Italian reinassance, /his/.
>>271957
who dislikes this guy is probably an assassin creed fan
>>271963
Ass Creed sums up half the stuff I hate about 'pop history'.
>>271957
Probably because he was a Borgia. I've heard one historian describe them as a proto-mafia crime family - not to mention some of the less savory things the family did as a whole after getting power.
Common law thread
ITT: We discuss our favourite and most important precedent setting cases.
Obligatory is R v Dudley and Stepehns;
the case that set the precedent that the need for survival is no defense for murder.
Canadafag, so I'll post my favourite charter challenge;
R v Collins, which set the precedent that evidence collected that violated the rights of the accused is inadmissible for discoveries.
for non-Monarchy countries, R is for Regina (or Rex) meaning Queen and King.
Civil code need not apply.
>>271730
I've always been partial to Gitlow v New York, which started the ball rolling of applying the Bill of Rights to state and local government, when it didn't before.
In addition to it being a huge development in American jurisprudence, it also lets me poke holes in gunfags arguments of original intent.
>>271730
So in common law countries, law can apply to everyone- but in cases not the sovereign?
>>271759
R/the Crown just represents the state. I'm sure there is a mechanism to try the sovereign for crimes though
How to learn ancient Greek or Latin?
Have you any method to recommend?
>>271725
Buy dictionary
Learn the basics of how the grammar works
Translate historical texts
>>271839
Yeah but should I start learning it like a normal language (vocab and learning how to speak)?
>>271725
>How to learn ancient Greek or Latin?
I learnt them in high school, so buy a textbook and use it. Do a lot of translations and find someone to check them.
>>271962
>learning how to speak
No. You're not gonna get any good at that anyway, basically noone is fluent so you'll have no chance to exercise. I'd suggest you just learn to translate it. If you insist to learn to speak it, then please for the love of god learn either restituted or international, english latin is just abominable to hear.

Is not being a vegan immoral?
Can a person be called moral if he causes a whole industry of suffering just because he likes the taste of a product that has no dietary necessity whatsoever?

I don't know OP. But I do know that being a vegan makes you an unlikeable douche bag doesn't shut the fuck up about being a vegan.
