The longest union in European history (1385-1795). Captured Moscow. The noble democracy actually worked for most of its history but bad political decision led to its downfall. The eastern region was like the Wild East with Poles, Ruthenians, Cossaks and annual Tatar attacks. The richest noblemen were more powerful than kings at least in those parts. Radziwiłł was probably the most famous with one of them famous for "selling" the country to the king of Sweden. His descendant was JFK's brother-in-law and another one is a minister in the Polish government.
>>
A neat one. The guy who captured Moscow (Stanisław Żółkiewsk) died in a battle with Turks 10 years later. There was an inscription on his grave which read: exoriare aliquis nostris ex ossibus ultor (May you arise an avenger from our bones)

His great-grandfather was Jan Sobieski. The king of the Battle of Vienna fame.

does that make them the only European country in history to succeed in taking Moscow? Neat.

I often hear uniforms anywhere from the 1600s-1800s getting criticized for being useless, giving away positions (in north american theaters) or just looking weird. Is there anything on uniforms from these eras that actually was useless or did every part have a purpose?

Uniforms are great for making it harder to shoot your own people
>>
>>2670480
Guns from this time were so short range that camouflage was of limited value (only useful in dense forests and whatnot).

By the time you get to the mid-19th century however, rifled barrels make bullets far more accurate, and armies should considered making uniforms more discrete.

Friendly fire is a big no-no. Despite what /pol/ says, you can't reliably tell a Pole from a German, or Russian, or whatever just by looking at them.

as for friendly fire i know it must have been hard, i read about the battle of Wagram and how the Saxons had similar uniforms to the Habsbirgs and how the French fired on them when retreating, did the uniforms play a big role when it came to smoke? I keep hearing that smoke was crazy intense in battles those days but a lot of films and reenactments don't seem to make that justice.
I always thought that the hats were made tall and intricate not only to look intimidating but also to easier tell apart friend from foe, this correct?

So either:

1. If Hitler didn't launch Barbarossa in 1941, Stalin would have attacked him sooner or later in the next few years as the USSR grew stronger, in which case Hitler was justified in preemptively attacking Russia,

or

2. Stalin would have never launched a war on Germany if Hitler hadn't attacked him, meaning that if Hitler had just stayed put in 1941 and not launched any new wars or major campaigns, he would have essentially have won the war.

Well /his/ which one is it?

>>
I'm pretty sure that seizing 'living space' from the east was one of Hitler's major goals. He was going to attack the USSR no matter what.
>>
>>2670432
But either scenario would require Hitler to be less retard than he is.
>>
>>2670432
Neither. 2 is less wrong, as Satlin had never particularly shown himself willing to embark on risky adventures like that, but if Hitler doesn't launch an attack, sooner or later you get atomic fire in Berlin, which loses the war if he doesn't lose to the Western Allies in a more conventional sense.

If Abraham Lincoln had pursued a more indirect form of abolition, whilst running for president, could he have prevented the civil war from breaking out.

What I mean is, is that the primary reason the South seceded as a result of Lincoln being elected was that they believed that he would become a form of dictator, and take away their primary form of income. Thus bankrupting them and effectively destroying the Southern economy.

What if instead of outlawing straight out, he set up a plan, to say outlaw slavery over 30 years or so. Starting with something such as no cruel treatment, then must be housed properly, you can not buy anymore slaves, then maybe you must pay them.

Sure the South wouldn't have liked this. But it wouldn't have fucked them over as much as direct abolition would have.

>>
That's literally what he did. Throughout his whole campaign he promised he wouldn't immediately abolish slavery. The south seceded because EVER ending slavery was unacceptable to them.

Let's talk about navies and ships, /his/

I am particularly interestedin the state of naval combat from roughly 1930-1950.
Different ships and what their purpose was. The size and impact of navies Any particularly noteable ships, tactics or battles.

All other naval information from any era is also welcome of course.

So who were these guys? The Roman Auxiliaries? From the word they sound like "rear echelon soldiers" or "support troops" and from cursory reading, they're mostly local forces raised to support the Roman legions, like militias, mercenaries, or something.

But do they get to fight? Or do they just hang around forts/camps scratching their balls defending it from attackers or simply reinforcements needed when called upon?

Roman Auxilia are not all mercenaries, some are indeed part of a formal roman army. The Auxilia is basically the bit of the Roman army that isn't made up of citizens.

Roman Auxilia absolutely do get to fight. While some are indeed rear echelon, many others tend to be really good soldiers, fulfilling crucial roles the Legions don't do well.

For example: Romans can't fucking into cavalry to save their hides, so Imperial subjects who had good cavalry traditions tend to fill that role as auxiliaries.
>>
>>2670137
They made up half of the Roman army. There were hundreds of thousands of them. They were made up of non-citizens recruited en-masse from inside or outside the empire. They tended to be used as the primary defence force on the frontiers e.g. Hadrian's Wall was manned by these dudes, while the legionaries were stationed in large fortresses in places like Eboracum and Deva. While most were just standard soldiers, usually armed with spears unlike the normal Roman troops, others performed more specialised roles that the Roman army was traditionally less successful with. Cretans and Syrians tended to be used as archers. People from the Balearics tended to be used as specialised slingers. Numidians and certain Gauls and Germans were used as powerful cavalry forces. At the end of their 25 year term an auxiliary would be granted Roman citizenship for themselves and their family, making it highly desirable as being a "peregrini" meant you did not have the same rights as a Roman citizen.

I'm guessing that's a mistranslation. Russian literacy was pretty low by European standards pre-WWI, and I'm guessing that Lenin was referencing literacy more broadly.

Well, your only citation is Richard Pipes, who says that he was told so by Jay Lovestone. Jay Lovestone is dead, as is Lenin, and the story is entirely anecdotal.

So unless you want to interrogate Richard Pipes to find out whether Jay Lovestone really told him that anecdotal story that may or may not be true, good luck comrade.
