Has anyone had any experience with these raid enclosures?

I really need a lot of storage, and while I'd totally just build a nas and use a software solution I'm gonna be stuck with a laptop and well I'd like to have a somewhat small enclosure for all my storage.

I was gonna buy the WD My Book Duo 16TB but they apparently use some nonsense hardware encryption that can only be used in their enclosures.

So, I'm looking at getting one of these Mediasonic raid enclosures and just filling it with some drives.

Will these eat my files?

Lads, I unfortunately bought a Macbook air for college roughly 10 months ago. I switched major and would like to go to a windows or linux based computer for the programming classes I'll be taking next semester. Whats a simple/cheap/effective laptop I could get for programming and word processing.

I understand that I could use bootcamp, but I could also sell it and buy something less expensive and just as useful. That being said, if I could be convinced to keep it I will.

Hey /g/, my laptop stopped booting the other day and I'm pretty sure the hard drive is dead, could you guys help me confirm? I removed the drive and connected it to my desktop via USB/SATA cable. Here's what I've tried and the error's I've gotten:

In my computer, trying to open the drive says it's not accessible and gives one of two errors, either that the request failed due to a fatal hardware error, or that the parameter is incorrect. Right clicking and going into properties and error checking returns that the check cannot be performed b/c windows cannot access the disk. Properties also says that there are 0 bytes of used and free space.

Western Digital Diagnostic:
quick test doesn't complete, it says that was interrupted by a hard or soft reset
extended test reads that the test found bad sectors that may be repairable.

Seatools:
SMART test, pass
short drive self test, fails at 10%
short generic test, fails at 46%
long generic test, fails at 0%

Is there any way I can recover the files on the drive?
Any recommendations on what brand to replace it with?

Tons of options to do it. Hard to decide. So I ask you g. What is your perfected method of making backups. Full backups perferably. I plan on storing them on a 2tb harddrive that I have. Possibly do automatic backups.
