Are farfetched settings best portrayed in visual or interactive-visual mediums like movies or video games?
In a book, you're naturally limited by how much you can 'explain' a setting. You can't just halt the action to have a bunch of paragraphs explaining minute details that are important to the feeling of the environment. It grinds the plot of the book to a halt and messes with the reader's immersion.
In a movie however, these details are always displayed, with no penalty to the narrative flow of the story. Your worldbuilding isn't at odds with your story in a visual medium.
Games take it a step further. You can actually interact with the surroundings seamlessly, meaning if there's a detail that interests you, you can uncover more about it, without the creator needing to have predicted your specific interests. And none of this interrupts the story at all.
The problem with this is that extremely skilled worldbuilders often lack the technical skills needed to portray their worlds in a visual format like a movie or video game, since all their experience is related to worldbuilding and writing. And they are rarely particularly skilled writers also. No one would argue Tolkien had beautiful prose. Maybe he would have if he spent those 15 years writing books instead of designing Middle Earth.
Given all that, is there no hope for non-standard settings? Are we destined to see them forever limited to textual portrayals which can't do them justice, with movie or video game adaptations only coming later, by people uninvolved with the world's creation (and who are, thus, likely to misportray the setting?)
A picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes less is more. A visual portrayal of a setting concretely hammers out every detail of that world. For people who want to sit back and sedately consume, with little mental energy spent on imagination, that might be a comforting thing.
But the best settings are intentionally vague, giving the reader only the thoughtstems from which the details of the setting can grow according to his or her personal tastes. My idea of the setting of Neuromancer is probably entirely different from how you envision it, and there's no doubt we would be upset if either of us had to accept the other's conception of it.
Movies or games don't give you this luxury of imagination. If your first experience with a setting is in a movie or video game, your personal imagination of the world isn't just contradicted, you're prevented from ever forming one at all. It's all laid out in front of you, often in a way which panders to the widest audience possible without appealing deeply to anyone in particular. That's the penalty of having every detail of the setting defined visually.

This. Instead of saying worlds are limited to words, prose allows the reader's imagination to also build on that world. Imagination is limitless. Instead of one world you and your readers create many versions of it.
As there are details that can only be conveyed visually, there are also qualities that only prose can convey well. In my opinion, I feel feelings (comfy, spooky, etc.) more when reading settings instead of watching or playing them.
Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on with the boards?

Does /fitlit/ meditate? Post your routine.

I do guided meditations 10 minutes a day every morning. I want to increase the time I meditate for but I feel like every time I try to meditate for 15-20 min I'm lost in thought the entire time. I also want to get to the point where I can do unguided meditations but I feel like I've become dependent on the guide and the guide is somewhat of an anchor for me. What do?
What's the best book on learning to mediate?
A book for /fitlit/. How to be an ubermensch 101.

/lit/ is for the discussion of literature, specifically books (fiction & non-fiction), short stories, poetry, creative writing, etc. If you want to discuss history, religion, or the humanities, go to /his/. If you want to discuss politics, go to /pol/. Philosophical discussion can go on either /lit/ or /his/, but ideally those discussions of philosophy that take place on /lit/ should be based around specific philosophical works to which posters can refer.
Check the wiki, the catalog, and the archive before asking for advice or recommendations, and please refrain from starting new threads for questions that can be answered by a search engine.
/lit/ is a slow board! Please take the time to read what others have written, and try to make thoughtful, well-written posts of your own. Bump replies are not necessary.
