Yes possible. A concern is that factories are typically capital intensive and has illiquid assets i.e. heavy plant, property, and equipment.

>day after brexit everyone laughing at britain's markets

how do people still take stock market fluctuations based on sensational short term headlines seriously?

if you invest in stock indexes you will NEVER fail (unless the entire economy fails)

That ignores the off chance the entire economy does collapse, i think the next century ecological catastrophe's will play an increased role. You're also buying in at a point when markets are heavily inflated due to economic policies which could change in a very rapid time. It's always funny when people show andex charts which typically go back 50 years before fundamental changes happened to our economy.

FTSE100 is a poor benchmark for UK economy because the companies in it are mainly foreign-oriented. FTSE250, which is more domestic oriented, is at 16 200, comparee to the 17 300 the day before results.

Can someone quickly redpill me on investing, or direct me to a useful site?

I'm just about to graduate, and am in the process of applying for my first 'real' job. The ones I'm going for have salaries of ~£25-30k. On that salary, if I keep my lifestyle frugal I could immediately put aside about ~£5k per year to invest in low-risk stocks. Would it be worth doing this as soon as possible, or should I just chill out, enjoy being young for a bit, and wait until mid-career when I have higher earnings before starting an investment portfolio? Also, what rate of return is typical for a diverse low-risk portfolio? How much research is needed before starting to invest? Do you need a very good understanding of economics, or is it something anyone can do with a bit of common sense and money? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hi does anyone here have any experience self teaching accounting? I want to go that path since college costs money and I think I am motivated enough to learn at a faster pace than that anyways. I want to learn because I am gifted with math and numbers and have no real marketable business skills, and wanted to change that, because I plan on going into business in a very broad sense.

If anyone could recommend books or other sources of knowledge on this topic, or a more effective approach to entering business, I would be most appreciative if you could give me some advice, or general knowledge about accounting.

>maths and numbers
Accounting is more like learning a language.
>>
I studied tax law and accounting isnt that hard. You just have to get it. And then it all falls into place. You just need to learn the rules.
It has little to do with math. If you can add up and subtract you'll be fine.

You could call a local university and ask what books are needed for next semester. If you have to guts you could even join some classes without paying.

now this is helpful, thanks bro

I've recently seriously lucked into a job that I don't really have the experience for and I'm wondering if /biz/ can give me some advice on climbing the corporate ladder.

Bit of backstory:

I'm quite an inexperienced manager and I applied for a "department supervisor" position where my line manager would have been the "Director of Operations" who was currently ill (he'd had a stroke and had been in hospital for a few months) The company is a call centre in the security and software industry with about 30 employees.

I don't really know what happened in the interview. I was interviewed by the owner and managing director of the company, he just chatted to me and asked me non of the standard interview questions for a management job. At the end of the interview he offered me £5,000 more than the advertised salary and the rank of "Department manager", I would also not be junior to the "Director of Operations", I'd be directly under him (The MD) (Said something about me being "The right age" (I'm 26))

I've now been at the company a month, through some casual conversations I've had with the MD on the structure of the company, he considers me on the same ranking as the "director of operations" within the company structure. Although I don't understand this as Director of Operations is a much much higher position than Department Manager since you are on the board of directors. I'm guessing it also has a much better salary. I've also learnt that the Director of Operations wont be coming back to work for at least another year, he can barely walk at the moment. He's also close to retirement anyway (He's 60) so might not ever come back. The Owner/MD also shared some issues he had with the guy, stating he's an "over promoted security guard" that got the job "Because he's sort of my mate" and he's actually pretty incompetent at his job.

The question is how do I steal this guys job, become the new director of operations and become a successful corporate psychopath?
9 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
And if I can't steal his job how do I readdress the balance?

If two people are on the same rank, one of them can't have a much better title than the other and a much larger pay cheque. I'll need the same pay as him and a similar title.

The MD/Owner has expressed that he doesn't give a fuck about job titles, but in the real world people do.

And the reason I'm a department manager at 26 years old, with 6 months managerial experience?

My salary is about on par with the lowest ranked manager at a large company. My title is massively over inflated because of the small size of the company (30 employees)

If I had the same title at a normal sized call centre my salary would be double or even triple.

So I'm not really qualified to be a department manager, but now that it's on my CV I'm golden.

Another casual conversation I had with the MD/Owner surrounding titles where I was discussing how grateful I was to have the job as the title looks fantastic on my cv, the MD/Owner said to me "Well look do you want to leave here after 3 years with a fantastic CV and reference? Or do you want to be the Managing Director on £50k because I'm at home taking an early retirement?"

How would /biz/ play this? As I honestly think this is the best career opportunity I've ever had. Most people get stuck as low grade managers for life.

I've been asked to hire a supervisor to be my assistant (The job I originally applied for). Not wanting someone that could potentially be a danger to me. I've already redefined the role as more of a senior customer service agent and less like a junior manager, I've also lowered the advertised salary.

So why are you still here? Why am *I* still here?

Hi /biz/,first time poster here, and I have a question for you guys.I'm starting my last year of high school this fall, and I need help with choosing a degree/major.

I'm from Croatia and I was thinking about going to Denmark to study Marketing or Business. Are those meme degrees?I know Economics is better, but here in Croatia a degree in Economics is pure shit, anything else is better.
Not talented enough for STEM,but I am able to study hard if something interests me.
Family is going to cover everyday costs but not tuition.I go to one of the better schools in my city, and the best GPA
in Croatia is 5.0 and my GPA this year was 4.1.

Help me with picking a non meme degree please

Yes, marketing is a meme degree. Why? Well, what do you think you'll learn in marketing class? Basically it's a bunch of models, interesting words etc, and you can learn all that while being terrible at marketing. The only way to actually get good at marketing is to practice it, which is why studying the subject is meaningless..

What about Business or any Business related degree?
Is it possible to get a job in Marketing or Business without a degree in Western Europe?
Keep in mind that without a college degree my highschool diploma is worth nothing,I have no trade and no "real" skills.

Just graduated with a BS Biology. Want to become a business analyst now. What do I need to do next? What skills do I need to know?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I wouldn't recommend doing another degree unless you have the money for it.
Depending on the availability of biology related businesses or organisations in your area, you can just work for one of those with the intention of slowly moving into the business side of things but with specialist knowledge.
So long as you understand the basics of accounting, finance so you can build upon those skills and having good communication skills plus work hard you can get into business.

I just started a new job as a financial admin for an aerospace contractor and I have a few concerns. I was mainly hired to take over a lot of the accounting functions of the business. After getting a look at their books, I found that they haven't been recording transactions properly and a couple of their bank accounts aren't in balance. I just came from a publicly traded company who undergoes regular financial audits so seeing books in this state worries me a lot. I'm wondering if I should try to find another job or just try and fix their books and stay with it. Fixing their books would took over a month and I don't know if I want to do it. What do you guys think? every experience anything similar?

I think that if you do it *During work and a bit over time* it will look good and get more reputation and tell them how it's ment to be done and say this is a better way.
>>
>>1354454
Bring it up with the company manager, the person or persons who did the books before, or whoever else you report to and explain what you are seeing. If they ask you to do something and you see ANY red flags, assume they are trying to get you to break the law, an leave the company. Otherwise, you could get audited and it will all fall on you. Ask what happened to the person or persons before you who did the finances.
