Didnt know where to post this, is this board alright for martial arts stuff?
if not just ignore post. Anyway need to learn a martial art, i almost get in a fight literally once a week (never start anything, people just fuck with me, seriously no idea why me, even have friends point out 'why the hell do people always mess with you') Not too long ago I got jumped by 3 guys, didn't end well. Anyway need to learn to defend against this endless shit.
Theres a Muay Thai place down my street but I heard its not a practical martial art as it more or less teaches you to kill people.

It's all on the coach, Muay Thai is practical depending on how you are trained. A good way to tell if the gym is good is to look at the coach's fight record and their fighters fight record, be sure the records relate to major fight organizations such as WKA, IKA, UFC etc
A good example would be my gym: The head coach is a ex world champion, ex international champion, and ex national champion, his fighters include the current WKA national lightweight champion, a pro fighter will alot of fights under his belt, a few other fighters, and an amateur fighter who just won his last two fights in a row one by knock out.
As for self defense, tell your coach that you want that to be your main focus and they should help adujst techniques for street use( I.e. bare handed hooks should be thrown palm down, while boxing gloves are more often taught palm towards your chest.)
