Hey /an/, I'm moving into my bf's apartment soon with my cat. He just moved in last week himself, and I'm wondering if there's any precautions I should take about bringing in a cat where other cats were previously. The previous owner had two cats that lived both indoors and outdoors on the porch, and I'm worried about ticks or bugs or things that might be lingering. Should I spray for bugs? How should I do it? Should I take my cat to the vet again before we move in for updated shots?

I think you're a retard and you should be worrying more about all the STDs you can pick up from the toilet seat and men your boyfriend has been fucking.
>>
If you cat is not up to date on shots then yes, do that. As for the fleas and ticks, you could put down some flea power or something.

You might also want to go around with a blacklight and spray an enzyme cleaner in case any of those spots are piss from the previous cats possibly making your cat want to pee there as well

As someone who just moved into a place where there were previous animals, I wish I would have had the carpets steam cleaned. Like super deep steam cleaned. The carpets were disgusting and the thing I rented wasn't good enough. It made due but I had to go over it like twice.

If you are paranoid about fleas and ticks, maybe hire an exterminator to do a bug bomb and fumigate the house. Will kill everything. There is also special spray you can get for fleas and ticks for the back as well.

And your cats should always be up to date on their shots.

Hi.

This bird has been living in my neighbourhood for 3 years now, coming when it is summer and leaving when it is winter. Sorry for the shit quality, but what kind of a bird is it? A hawk? Looks too small to me. Can you tell its age? Sex? How long do they live?

It perchen in front of my window and tore what appeared to be a mouse to pieces. It left, and there doesn't seem to be any mouse remnants left except some blood stains. Should I be concerned about disease or will it be fine?

I have a 7 year old min pin. She's as sweet as can be and well-behaved. However, when I or anyone else tries to hold her paw in order to trim her nails, she flips out and starts fighting to get away. She hates having her paws messed with. No matter if I'm trying to clip her nails or wear them down with a nail file, she tries to pull away; I try to hold onto her, but she's got such tiny delicate paws that I can't hold on/pull back too much without fearing that I'm gonna hurt her.

What can I do to make her not fight me on this?

I have toy poodles.
I sit on them to clip their nails.
one leg over the doge's shoulder to hold it down and then clip away.

if they're really feisty I'll wrap them in a towel with only their face and one paw sticking out.
>>
>>2160197

You need to train her to like it. Do you use a clicker? Start slowly, so...

> Touch paw for a second- click and treat
> Hold paw for a second - click and treat
> Touch nail for a second- click and treat
> Hold nail for a second- click and treat
> Get nail scissors out - click and treat if she even looks at them
> Hold nail scissors close- click and treat
> Place nail scissors near paws- click and treat
> Touch nail scissors to paw- click and treat
> Touch nail scissors to nail- click and treat.

And so on... Keep going until she practically wags her tail the moment the nail scissors comes out. You need to associate trimming her nails with good things. Just go slowly, don't expect her to change overnight.
>>
>>2160206
My mother used to have to wrangle my grandmother's dachshund like that to clip her nails.

>>2160279
She's never been trained before, but I'll try that.
Question, though: can pets substitute treats? I know treats probably work best, but she's already a little overweight (we're working on it) and I don't want her to get too chunky off of treats.

Oh boy, it's this thread again.

Found two baby hares just now next to a third dead one plus their dead mother. Took those two fuckers home and checked what to do.
According to the law where i live, you are not allowed to keep injured or abandoned animals for longer than 48 hours and need to contact a shelter. I will do that in the morning but they are still young enough to still suckle and i am not sure they will survive the night.
What i didn't find was answer on what to feed them.
I do have baby formula at home that contains mostly wheat and grains.
Pic related is not mine.

I got my dog's anal glands expressed at the vet's last month. The tech who did it told me they were "extremely full".

Well fast forward to today, and I've bee noticing him whimpering to go outside a lot, doing some scooting, and licking at his butt a lot. So maybe he needs them expressed again. I take him to the vet, and the tech this time said the glands were incredibly full, expressing them caused him pain, and the discharge was "chunky". They suggested that I may need to have them expressed every two weeks.

Is this fucking normal??? All the techs at the vet seemed to say it was normal, and some dogs just dont have the anatomy to express them the natural way. This is my first dog, so I don't have a frame of reference, so is this true? Should I get a second opinion on this? Has anyone else had a dog in a similar situation?

is his poop soft? try feeding food that causes firm stool, the glads then get cleaned with each shit.
>>
>>2159968
My foster dog had somewhat chunky glands that need to be expressed. Not that often, but it is not unheard of. If your dog isn't difficult, see if you can ask the vet to show you how to do it so you can do it yourself.

I just brought my dog to the vet to get it done because fuck that.
>>
>>2159971
No. His poop is pretty firm.

>>2159972
So not unheard of, huh? That makes me feel better. This just seems really strange to me.

My vet charges 15 dollars for it and I don't need an appointment for it too. For how revolting I have heard it is to do, I will fork over the 15 bucks.

so this morning i found a green blister on my dogs abdomen would anyone know whats is wrong with him? im worried about him.

Likely to be an abscess: if it's green then I'd bet quite happily it is filled with pus.

Take your dog to the vet to get it drained, and then get some antibiotics if the vet deems it necessary.

Can anyone help identify this bird? Spotted yesterday in southern Saskatchewan. Mom thinks maybe a unique colour morph of a red tailed hawk or even Ferringenous hawk.

Why is dog food shirty? Is there a better alternative?

Make him the food yourself.

My grandmother used to feed her dogs a bowl of chicken and rice every day.

They were pretty healthy and one of them lived to be 19.
>>
>>2159812
This is a terrible idea
>>
>>2159812
Chicken and rice is okay if your dog has an upset tummy and needs bland food. Just chicken and rice is not nutritionally sufficient for dogs.

That being said, there are tons of very high quality dog foods. Go to dogfoodadvisor.com and use the powers of the internet to get a 5-star food delivered to your door.

which of these is generally the better swimmer?

it's one of those weird evolution things-
animals that can't swim don't usually survive.

both are still around, so they're both equally capable of swimming if needed.

My 14 year old dog just had his first seizures a few days ago and was given phenobarbital for it. In case you weren't aware, pheno causes loss of control in animals' rear legs (ataxia). My mom freaked and asked the vet to change it to keppra. So, while the pheno wears off, my dog still can't walk right and he's depressed and pitiful. How can I help him? Special grippy booties?

Hi guys my hamster randomly died. Any causes? She had fresh water, food, I use aspen bedding, she lived in a bin cage, had an eight inch wheel (solid not wire) and was a dwarf hamster. My guess is genetics. She was eight weeks old according to the pet shop and I had her for a bit more than a month. Also no symptoms of anything just dead.

Pic related. It's the corpse.

Possibly parasites or some underlying sickness that struck hard and fast. Genetics could also be why. Do you have a cat or dog? Something may have scared her during the night and a heart attack could have done her in.

Fortunately I don't have to deal with any dead hamsters in the pet store where I work because we get them from a local breeder who takes really good care of them and manages his genetics properly. If you get another one, maybe trying purchasing it from somebody who breeds them or buying from a store who gets them from somebody like that. Places that supply most chain pet stores hardly give a fuck about genetics or animal wellbeing. Dropping a little more money on a well managed, we'll bred animal will be worth it in the long run.

Regardless, sorry for your loss. RIP in piece, hamsterino.
