Yeah, 2 is better imo. Just don't play at a resolution higher than 720p (use mods) as anything higher is too zoomed out.

2 has better and more refined gameplay, 1 has a better story and does a better job at giving you a feeling for the world. Play 1 first and you'll appreciate the things that 2 does better more.

Never pick Expert on your first playthrough, it basically allows you to use any characters Grids on anyone, so LITERALLY everyone can turn out exactly the fucking same with enough grind.
Use regular grid.

Yeah, I feel like going through the regular sphere grid is better for a first playthrough because it focuses on each archetype and combat style.

Like you said, Expert allows for more customization and allows you to kinda make your characters into whatever you want at the beginning of the game. This is good for minmaxing i guess (although iirc, the expert sphere grid actually has less nodes than the regular one, so you technically have less stats you can allocate). The thing with endgame FFX is that every character is the same at the end once you fill out the Sphere Grid. The only thing that setts them apart are their Overdrives and Yuna can summon Aeons.

My best advice is to just spread your characters out and pick up all the useful abilities.

RF3 to me feels like it's when the series really started getting good, so even though RF4 has more content and arguably better gameplay (better waifus is debateable), it won't give the same shock as going back to RF1.

Going backwards regarding gameplay is not a real problem for me, because if im playing RF3 its gonna be because of the story and the bachelorettes, wich i heard that they stand out more than RF4's counterparts (debatable, but more players favours 3 than 4 on that regard).
