I dug 2, but I got stuck on Mega Nada when I fucked up my skill trees and never got past him. Loved Nocturne and was wondering if DDS1 was worth going back to since I've played very little SMT.

In other SMT games i naturally level up as i progress through the world and that's the only thing required. In nocturne by the last dungeon i was already at level 80 without forcing myself to grind shit.

In DDS you have to grind AP which is completely separate to your level which is time consuming for every member.

DDS1 has a nice atmosphere and good music but it's retroactively made underwhelming by the fact that the game is mostly setup to a payoff that isn't very good.
Gameplay is basically the same as DDS2 but with a different skill grid. It's passable but not too exciting compared to other games in the series.

I blame it all on Persona 4. Everyone called P3 a high school sim/ dungeon crawler that let you live out your perfect high school days but it was P4 that truly encapsulated that meme by giving you the ultimate in self insert wankery with Yu.
Atlus realizing they struck gold, milked the shit out of P4 with endless spin-offs, slowly changing the line to fit in with what new fans consider and SMT game which unfortunately is personas 4 and 5. Though maybe P5 darker elements may pull the series back to its roots.

I'm not even talking about the models, the artstyle and environments in Persona are much better than everything in the rest of the SMT franchise. Everything in DDS is grey, lifeless, dark, gloomy, and I know it fits with the plot but its obviously a workaround the lack of resources and like I said eventually it makes the game feel ugly/cheap.

Kaneko's artstyle is completely hit and miss, I've been saying it on every single SMT thread we've had lately: I know several people who have not tried a single SMT game because of Kaneko's artstyle
