Never pick Expert on your first playthrough, it basically allows you to use any characters Grids on anyone, so LITERALLY everyone can turn out exactly the fucking same with enough grind.

Yeah, I feel like going through the regular sphere grid is better for a first playthrough because it focuses on each archetype and combat style.

Like you said, Expert allows for more customization and allows you to kinda make your characters into whatever you want at the beginning of the game. This is good for minmaxing i guess (although iirc, the expert sphere grid actually has less nodes than the regular one, so you technically have less stats you can allocate). The thing with endgame FFX is that every character is the same at the end once you fill out the Sphere Grid. The only thing that setts them apart are their Overdrives and Yuna can summon Aeons.

My best advice is to just spread your characters out and pick up all the useful abilities.

Shit is linear for everyone, just progress forward on everyones sphere and you'll have no problems. The only toss-up is really Khimari, who is garbage tier anyways. You really don't need fancy sphere grid shit until post/late game (example, Yuna getting Dualcast, rendering Lulu pointless).

Lack of EXP share fucking hurts certain characters, but if on PC you can mod that shit in (and I would recommend it).

There's no reason not to send everyone down their default paths. The Sphere Grid is incredibly linear unless you're someone who wants to send Yuna down Auron's path early in the game for some autistic reason.

You can't break the game anywhere near as much with Regular but you also can't permanently fuck yourself over like with Expert when you don't know what you're doing.
Expert is LITERALLY only for people that played through the game at least once, you're not supposed to use it on first playthrough.
Heck I think the game even gives you a gigantic warning box saying that.

Just restart and choose standard sphere grid.

Not only is Expert a confusing mess that turns all the characters into clones from the start, it also has far fewer nodes, so you can NEVER get as strong as with the standard grid. There's no point in using it regardless of your playstyle.

So what was the reasoning behind even making the Sphere grid? Square trying something new?

i liked it, i thought it was an interesting way to level up your characters. the only thing i didn't like was it kinda removed all the individuality behind the characters. once you reached endgame and everyone had 255 in all stats, 9999 hp and 999 mp everyone was literally a clone aside from their overdrives (which was why everyone ran Tidus, Wakka and Rikku because they had the best ones by far).
