What if the world were like a bit coin mining scheme, except instead of finding hash codes with a certain pattern, the goal were to locate the zeros of the Riemann Hypothesis?

Locating the zeros doesn't really help solve the problem, since there is an infinite number of non-trivial zeros.

But knowing more zeroes would allow people to better determine the distribution of prime numbers, but then the question is why that would be useful...

As a kid I didn't qualify for gifted programs, so obviously I had sub 120 IQ. Even as a teenager I didn't feel that smart. But then in my later years in college it felt like I became more and more intelligent at a frightening pace, and now should easily be an IQ of 130+. I'm at the point now where I feel like I have nothing in common with the puny mortals walking down the street beside me.

Does anyone else know this feel? Is it possible for IQ to just jump up like that?

I'm 69 years old and I have an IQ of 420 if that helps.
>>
Possible, but unlikely. The older you get the more fixed your IQ.
>>
>>9081815
A change in IQ usually occurs starting at 10 years old and really develops between 12-14. A sub 120 IQ does not mean much since it was taken as a youth. High scoring IQs at a young age don't indicate intelligence as much as they only suggest that the person developed at an early age. In fact, high IQ adults usually take longer and at a later age to develop their high IQ. Also, you may have just a high quantitative IQ but a low IQ everywhere else. In college, your specialized classes may just use the part of your IQ you excel at.

NASA's Voyager probes were launched 40 years ago, in August 1977. Since then, they have provided data about increasingly-distant regions of space, with Voyager 1 crossing the heliopause in heliopause in August 2012. Their power supplies are gradually winding down, and the satellites will become inoperational by the early 2030's. Say something nice about them, /sci/.

>invents own language
Ah, no it didn't. Read the sentences they produced. That is literally just modified english. Heck, facebook people even translated one of their phrases and it is pretty much what you would expect.

Heck, facebook even has a full explanation (that your article did not quote, I see). See, AI is a meme that means anything. They are using a neural network and they reward their programs based on how well they can trade shit. They perform trades by communicating with each other and agreeing on what they will trade. As facebook said: the AIs were not given a reward for using english so the AIs quickly started shortening and changing words to be able to speak more efficiently to make trading faster.

That is literally all of it. A program acting as it was expected. Nothing to see here, just a brainlet masturbating over the spoooky singularity booooo.

Genome editing has potential for the targeted correction of germline mutations. Here we describe the correction of the heterozygous MYBPC3 mutation in human preimplantation embryos with precise CRISPR–Cas9-based targeting accuracy and high homology-directed repair efficiency by activating an endogenous, germline-specific DNA repair response. Induced double-strand breaks (DSBs) at the mutant paternal allele were predominantly repaired using the homologous wild-type maternal gene instead of a synthetic DNA template. By modulating the cell cycle stage at which the DSB was induced, we were able to avoid mosaicism in cleaving embryos and achieve a high yield of homozygous embryos carrying the wild-type MYBPC3 gene without evidence of off-target mutations. The efficiency, accuracy and safety of the approach presented suggest that it has potential to be used for the correction of heritable mutations in human embryos by complementing preimplantation genetic diagnosis. However, much remains to be considered before clinical applications, including the reproducibility of the technique with other heterozygous mutations.

Key Highlights:
These WGS results support our Digenome-seq conclusions that gene correction did not induce any detectable off-target mutations in selected blastomeres

Taken together, these Digenome-seq, WGS and WES results demonstrate high on-targeting specificity of CRISPR–Cas9 in human embryos without any off-target effects.

This striking difference implies that human gametes and embryos employ a different DNA damage response system, perhaps reflecting the evolutionary importance of maintaining germline genome integrity

On the basis of our results, it may not even be necessary to provide exogenous oligo templates for gene correction in heterozygous human embryos.

Despite remarkable targeting efficiency and high HDR frequency, some CRISPR–Cas9-treated human embryos demonstrated NHEJ-induced indels and thus would not be suitable for transfer. Therefore, genome editing approaches must be further optimized before clinical application of germline correction can be considered.

CRISPR–Cas9 targeting seen in our investigation was very accurate, providing assurance regarding safety concerns.

As indicated, PGD may be a viable option for heterozygous couples at risk of producing affected offspring. In cases when only one parent carries a heterozygous mutation, 50% of embryos should be mutant. In contrast, targeted gene correction can potentially rescue a substantial portion of mutant human embryos, thus increasing the number of embryos available for transfer.

If anyone has suggestions on how to photograph the eclipse during both lead up to and during totality, please post.

Personally I'm hiking to the top of a mountain so I can see the umbra approach. For totality I will have some binoculars and a timer to let me know when I'm nearing the end of totality to look away.

I do not know much about photography but I have taken photographs of Eclipse before without any specific equipment.
But you need those solar shades. Put them behind your phone camera and take pictures.
Works perfectly.

What does it mean if you love math but hate proofs

Does it mean you're more practical? Should be an engineer? A brainlet?

No, it means you are misguided. You can't love math but hate proofs because proofs ARE mathematics. Proofs are even most of it. Just liking the statements in mathematics makes you a poser at best.

I understand that

But the majority of applications of mathematics, which are innumerable, do not rely on knowledge of the proof itself once the mathematical concepts are fully fleshed out as useful tools

You can accomplish things using math without proofs. You can create things. You can model things. How is utilization of the tool of mathematics even if you personally dislike creating mathematical tools, being a "poser"?
>>
>>9081525
Not him, but what you have described is basically engineering.

Simply put, engineering is about using math as a tool to solve real world problems, whereas the field of mathematics views the actual mathematics an end in itself.

a lot of studying "tricks" are really obvious shit. Like actually spending time studying. There are honestly a lot of people who wonder how to study who just need to sit down and force themselves to look at the text book.

ITT: we post common scientific misconceptions and shoddy factoids that even scientists often accept.

Starting with several well-known molecular clock estimates.

In "Reading the entrails of chickens: molecular timescales of evolution and the illusion of precision", Dan Graur and William Martin rip some popular molecular clock estimates to shreds. The piece is listed as opinion, but actually contains quite a bit of technical criticism peppered with sarcastic shit-talking. Highlights include:

>In this paper, the 310 ^ 0 MYA and the 110 ^ 0 MYA dates are treated as ‘independent’ calibrations for purposes of dating avian divergence events. The results based on the 310 ^ 0 MYA calibration and the results based on the 110 ^ 0 MYA calibration are compared and discussed. Unsurprisingly, because one date was derived from the other, the two values yielded concordant results. Interestingly, other authors have been misled into regarding these two dates as independent calibrations .

> Let us now see what happens if we include the calibration and derivation uncertainties in the calculations. The 95% interval turns out to span a period of ,14.3 billion years (from 14.3 billion to 93 MYA). Of course, to state that the lineages leading to Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans diverged
from each other subsequent to the formation of the solar system but before the Cretaceous period requires no molecular data.

>Trying to estimate the divergence times of fungal, algal or prokaryotic groups on the basis of a partial reptilian fossil and protein sequences from mice and humans is like trying to decipher Demotic Egyptian with the help of an odometer and the Oxford English Dictionary. This is not to say that molecular estimates of divergence times are flawed per se; on the contrary, they are useful when based on solid statistical methodology and multiple fossil calibrations.

A lot of scientists know the calibrations are bad, but a lot don't and for some reason you see these figures popping up in textbooks, middlebrow nature magazines like National Geographic or Scientific American, and lectures.

So yeah, bad science general. Also if you don't have bad science research post stories of scientists doing other stupid stuff like that time 'genius' chemist Thomas Midgley Jr. poured tetraethyllead on his hands in a PR stunt to prove that leaded gasoline was safe and then developed lead poisoning and had to take a sabbatical.

Let’s say we apply this generic statement to quantities of apples. But a quantity of apples is meaningless without some context to describe WHERE (OR IN WHAT SENSE) this quantity exists. The context might be 'on a table', 'in a basket', 'apples that you own', 'apples in a certain building'.
Hence the left-hand side could relate to quantities of apples on my table and the right-hand side could relate to the number of apples on your table. The equals sign means that both tables contain the same quantity of apples.
Now consider we change the statement to be 0+0=0 What are we representing here? It appears that we have added zero apples to your table whereas my table remains unaltered. It appears that you now have two groups of zero apples on your table, and it might not be immediately obvious why this is logically incorrect. To see why it is logically incorrect, consider the scenario where we both have 3 apples on our respective tables: 3 = 3. The table is the container and we can define a 'group' of apples as a quantity of apples connected by touch. Therefore if my table always contains one group of apples then you could re-group the apples on your table to show that: 3 = 2 + 1, 3 = 1 + 1 + 1 But in the case of zero apples, they cannot be re-grouped. There is always just zero apples. We cannot have 0 + 0 apples on a single table.

Why do Blacks have higher verbal than spatial abilities? What evolutionary explanations have been given to this? I read that it was because traditionally in Africa learning the oral traditions was of prime importance, more so than tasks that required high spatial ability. But I'd like to know about other theories.
