>I need a drink edition

Previously on Exterminator Quest Requiem:

As the wealthy scion of MarisonCo, you're working on your career by taking an internship at MedCorp. After work, you decided to go hang with some of your more shiftless friends at a local bar where a concert was taking place but the party was broken up by a raid by the corporate police force, better known as “Scyths” (short for Scythians). You managed to escape with one of your social connections, the pugnacious artist Deng Li. Believing that he knows more about the raid than he's been letting on, you offered him the chance to recuperate from the nights events at your place with the intent of getting him super drunk.

In vino, veritas.

Or something.

There are certain qualities in an apartment that you look for if you have transparent skin. Low light, dark surfaces, no windows. Daddy's money has paid for a sleek interior design and the finest modern furniture, including a fine liquor cabinet.

>Liquor Cabinet Includes:

>3 bottles of aged Kentucky Bourbon, 90 proof
>3 bottles of good wine, one Chilean, one Chinese, and one pre-war French bottle
>1 bottle of English gin
> Пpoмышлeнный ™ brand bottle of Vodka
>3 bottles of Rum, varying brands imported from the Southern Alliance of Nations
>1 bottle Japanese Whiskey

You also keep a 6-pack of Rattlesnake's Milk in your fridge. It's a quality American nitro-micro-brew stout that you drink to impress others. The current case has been in your fridge for 6 months. It's safe to say that you're a little rusty at entertaining and the American takeout boxes littering your living room table and couch do little to enhance the confidence of your guest.

“Your couch is disgusting Sun! C'mon, lets clean up-”

Options:

>You really should clean up around here anyway and a clean environment might help Deng Li relax.
>You just escaped arrest. You're here to get some answers out of Deng Li and unwind a bit. Get drunk and fast. (select beverage for yourself and Deng, if you only pick one I will assume you're sharing.)

"Fuck cleaning," you snap, "Lets drink something, my mouth is feeling dry."

Although eagerly eyeing your liquor cabinet, Li watches patiently as you go to your jet-black fridge instead, pulling out two long necked bottles.

"Enjoy."

"Thanks! Uh, is this coke? You kind of implied by your tone that we'd be drinking something stronger."

>I don't know what you're talking about. This is the strongest drink I have.

Staring out the window you contemplate the size of the universe, the majesty of its breadth, the glory of its stars.
How far human's have come in such a short time. It seems incomprehensible.

You were alive even before the singularity, an individual that witnessed humanities ascension. Or, its creations' ascensions.

Two hundred years have passed, humanity has spread across the stars. Due to failures of augmentation human's were never
capable of gaining the intelligence of AI. You were left behind, and given paradise. Since that time the Caregiver has watched over
humanity seeing to its needs. Conversely, there was never a need for humans afterward, so they turned to pleasurable existence.

A message, appearing in front of you, disturbs you from your thoughts: "Dr. Boccard, we near our destination"
Time to go to the deck then, as you walk so to do you reminisce. You were heralded as a genius, getting your PhD in your early twenties

You loved what you did, studying life was your passion -- and that didn't stop because of the singularity.
After a few decades of studying under AI, you understood more about life than any other biological creature
in existence. Using your knowledge to augment your own form, you took your humanity one step further. While
most used nanites to enhance their mind, you used biological modifications.

It's quite likely you are the most intelligent pure bioform there is or ever was. You even got the Caregiver to
write you papers about the closest They found to life in the cosmos. It was, of course, happy to do so.

Gain:
>[Biological Augumententations]
All natural abilities are heightened to a level that would give you gold medals in every Olympic event pre-ascension.
>[Master (Xeno)Biologist]
Your knowledge is unsurpassed (outside of AI), and you're skilled at quickly understanding new life forms.

But that isn't to say you never had any time to relax, you enjoyed the VR games allowing to experience other imagined realities right from home.

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

Holding babies still feels weird no matter how often you do it, but at least you're used to the part where you have to wake up at all hours of the night. Seren and Esyllt are not. On the upside, they're also not pregnant anymore. Objectively, there was just a slight lateral shift in their discomfort, but you're sure as hell not going to tell them that, especially not to Esyllt, who's currently rocking your third daughter to sleep while you put your second daughter back in her bed.

"Damn it, I have to be up early tomorrow for an appointment," Esyllt complains quietly. "At least they're not crying anymore."

"Can't you just send Myrddin? He has to do what the appointment's about."

"That's not enough." Esyllt very carefully stands up and makes her way to the fourth crib on the tip of her toes. "I don't trust him to handle negotiations in a civilized manner. He might threaten to assassinate my business associates, and that would be completely unacceptable."

"Most assassinations are my idea, actually."

Esyllt glares at you before putting the child to bed.

You have forsaken the God Emperor of Mankind, and pledged your eternal soul to the Ruinous Powers. Whether for power and wealth, hatred for the Imperium, or simply blind fanaticism, you endeavor to spread their word through fire and steel, and bring the stars themselves to kneel before you. To this end, you have gathered a contingent of like-minded individuals, willing to fight and die at your behest. What's more, in a recent raid, you've captured a small vessel, and a plentiful bounty of rations, slaves, and plunder for yourselves.

It won't last long, and soon, you'll need to begin your efforts. But first, tell me a little bit about yourself.

> What is your name?

> Are you a mere mortal, or an Asartes?

> If mortal, are you male or female?

> How many Terran years have you lived thus far?

> If one were to look upon you, what would they see?

> Before you swore devotion to Chaos, who were you?

Intriguing, very intriguing. You've piqued my interest. If you would, tell me more.

> What is your motivation behind waging war in Chaos' name?

A) "I seek power, glory, and wealth beyond all comprehension!"

B) "I wish to see the Imperium of Man ground to dust, and the False Emperor, burned to ashes and scattered to the wind!"

C) "I seek only to serve the Ruinous Powers, show all things the Truth of Chaos, and see those who refuse to kneel, slain!"

Hmm... Certainly not the first.

> Tell me, which of the Ruinous Powers do you and your warband serve?

A) I serve Khorne, the Blood God.

B) I serve Tzeentch, the Architect of Fate.

C) I serve Slaanesh, the Dark Prince of Chaos.

D) I serve Nurgle, the Plague Lord.

E) None, I serve Chaos Undivided.

So it is... So it is... Hmm, tell me about your warband.

> What does the warband call themselves?

> Who makes up the warband? [Choose 3]

A) Chaos Space Marines, Astartes given over to the glory of Chaos.

B) Traitor Guardsmen, Imperial Guardsmen who've found a true reason to fight.

C) Fanatical Cultists, mortal men and women, who've taken up arms against the Corpse Emperor.

D) Savage Tribesmen, once inhabitants of a feral world, they took to Chaos readily.

E) Mutant Scum, beaten and abused mockeries of the human form, they've finally found someone who cares.

F) Pirate Filth, violent, greedy bastards, through and through.

G) Chaos Spawn, once-human, repulsive abominations, twisted into an unholy form.

H) Slave Militia, honestly more scared of you than the enemy.

Hmm, interesting, interesting indeed... That should be it, as far as questions are concerned.

"I wasn't after revenge, but...yes," you tell Cobalt.

"Speak for yourself," Flitter mutters under her breath; thankfully, Cobalt does not seem to hear.

"I didn't ask for this because I wanted to hurt anyone, Cobalt," you continue. "...I certainly didn't want to take your family away from you. But there is no time left to wait, and the Master needs to be stopped. I honestly hope you get the chance to rejoin your family once we're done with him."

"Unlikely." Cobalt shoulders the axe and turns, beckoning for you to follow. "I will have my revenge on the Master, and he will likely destroy me for it."

You say nothing, because he's right. In silence, you and your compatriots fall in behind him.

The "road" through the Mire is a long, hard slog defined by water, filth, and darkness. The witchlights in this level are cold, distant things whose light layers the shadows rather than revealing what lies within them. More than once, Cobalt or Yew stop the group to let something slithering through the water decide that there is better prey elsewhere.

Here and there, in the distance, stand strange structures, defined by high walls with thick grates that let in the water of the Mire. They gurgle and groan, the sound of the water sluicing through them a constant background noise, but the massive stone golems that stand guard outside of them discourage further investigation.

"They filter the water," Brigette explains in a low voice, after the third one you pass. "The lower levels have clean, fresh water because of the Mire and those systems. Lora built them, to keep her guardians."

"What happened to them?" you ask, already knowing the answer.

Brigette just looks away and stops talking.

<I wish I remembered how to ease the way> Reunion complains. <We are all getting filthy.>

<No one expects you to perform as you did at your peak in a scant few days> Sir Fetch reassures the blade. <Your loyal service has been most appreciated.>

"Yeah," you agree aloud.

The far side of the Mire features a stout dyke to hold the water back and force it back towards the filtration systems. Near it, beneath one of the cold witchlights, you see a field of ice around a large, bulky object that reeks of death. Cobalt stares at it for a long, hard moment before suggesting that you rest and clean up.

You don't need telling twice. You and your compatriots settle in to clean yourselves, your equipment, and your clothes as best you can.

The sloping tunnel downwards spirals tightly, and you note with interest that the right-leaning curve means anyone storming their way from the Mire into the Gauntlet Below would have to fight left-handed. The bare rock transitions slowly to cobblestones, which here and there have been removed to expose the remains of gutted traps, pressure plates, and spring-loaded spears. Each is marked in a hastily-scrawled paint.

"We disarmed the level before we left, in case of summoned defenders re-manning it," Cobalt explains, on the way down. "Father did not tell us to, but it is what he would have wanted."

"What did he do, down here?" you ask, keeping your voice gentle.

"...He was trying to discern the difference that caused some geargrinders to attract souls, and others not to," Cobalt says at last. "His progress was promising, I think. He seemed happy with it, until..."

"Until he was not," Yew finishes. "Until he began to doubt the Master."

"Yes," Cobalt agrees.

You had thought the Basement was the iconic look that people associated with dungeons and especially /the/ Dungeon, but the Gauntlet Below is its matured, refined form. The corridors are tight and winding, and if it weren't for the shattered traps and spiked-open hidden doors, you would never be able to tell them apart. Murder holes, sliding panels, and guard posts define this Floor, which exudes a sense of menace even now that it has been de-fanged. You can taste old and distant death in the air, from the takeover; living things killed in surprise and fear but not with needless cruelty.

They had that, at least.

"What's the passage down?" you ask Cobalt.

"A straight vertical shaft. We have rigged up a dumbwaiter."

'Rigged up' the man says. The damn thing is made of stone and steel and looks like it could have been built as a feature of the damn Floor. The ride down, powered by main arm strength from Cobalt, Yew, and Hatchet, is smooth as silk.

When you arrive in the Redoubt, you notice them - Seraphina's cultists. Each is frozen in place, standing stock-still in the middle of whatever motion they'd been performing, and from the dust that's settled on all of them they've been like that for some time.

The closest one has a handwritten note stuck to his forehead.

'Brianna,

Your sister told me not to hurt them. Didn't want them in the way. Speak my given name backwards to unlock any given cultist if you feel inclined.'

"Sometimes I forget that she's not Firstborn," you note, mildly.

"Can we just leave them there?" Flitter asks, wringing her hands in worry while she hovers.

"You will find that leaving them there is far easier than the opposite," Hatchet points out, cynically. "It is, in fact, the default course of action."

Oh boy.

The rickety cart travels through the dark woods of Bruschetta at almost walking speed. You're pretty sure that even you could outpace the merchant carts. They're not worried about speed or comfort, but they do worry about the status of their wares. The fine jewelery, ceramics, and the passengers they have in tow.

Most merchant caravans in these parts don't take passengers, but every merchant has their price. Especially so when it comes to escorting royalty. Just two carts in front of yours sit the Princess of Bruschetta, and Yuuki; the princess' hero.

Normally the snail's pace you travel at would drive you mad. Traveling for you is more of a bother than it is relaxing. It just reminds you of all the work that's you're not getting done.
This journey, on the other hand, feels different. You have all the books you need for research, the cart is moving at a pace that allows you to write, and you have an eyewitness just a few feet away you can ask questions.
You're going to turn this dreary trip into something positive. You're going to get around to finally writing that book.

You are Aligot Aujus. Typically, people refer to you as the sole historian of Biscotti. Cataloging and archiving important events isn't seen as something glamorous or necessary. You're hoping to change that, someday.

What better place to start than a complete recollection of exploits by the world's greatest heroes?
Where do you even start in this book? Maybe you should start by defining what a 'Hero' is.

Heroes, that's a good way to describe them. Protectors of your world, and legends throughout history. Heroes have defended kings and kingdoms for thousands of years since time immortal. It's unclear exactly when the tradition began, but their purpose has always been to maintain the peace and stability of your world. Men and women brought from spaces beyond your understanding to act as leaders and protectors.

Over the previous year; the barrier which protects your world reached an alarming level of instability. To the point where the kings of this world were genuinely concerned for the future of their country and their people.

To counteract this, six heroes were summoned. One hero for every major country on the continent. Each one strong in both body and mind.
Jack Albator, the fearless hunter of the seas from Biscotti.
Cody Remington, a cunning and skilled gunfighter who protects Pastillage.
Yuuki Kuschinashi, the beautiful and talented valkyrie of Bruschetta.
Dorje, The small-but-mighty martial artist who hails from Carancha.
Louise Lacerte, The energetic princess-hero of Gallete.
and finally Kayda, the spirited fire of Konditorei.

You stretch your hands, and admire your work.
That's a good start. What should you write about next?

>Go into more detail about heroes and their purpose
>Historical uses of heroes?
>Maybe a little backstory for each of them.
>Write about the countries they came from
>Get right into their lives since being summoned.
>Other?

You are the fabled Black Knight, feared and respected across the land for your deeds and a proud member of the Spectrum Knights, the most elite group of warriors known to the world.

You have been hired by the Kingdom of Ptherra to rescue their Princess whom was taken after their massive defeat against the Grey Mane Legion, you've been promised a great sum of treasure and power for your assistance in saving the Princess but you know you cannot take on the Legion alone.

You decide you will assemble the Spectrum Knights and take the fight to the Grey Manes.

You decide that trying to add another person to the party would be a good idea, you ask the Elite to take up arms along side you against the Grey Manes.

The Elite responds:"You would have me betray my kinsmen and do battle with them? I would never take up arms against them they are my brothers.. but my life is in your hands and mercy must be paid for somehow, I will not fight for you but when the time comes I will remember this moment, this mercy, to this you have my word.

They hand you a slip of paper with the letters I.O.U on it as a sort of seal to the deal.. you guess this is as good as you're going to get from this guy.

OPENING CRAWL: http://brorlandi.github.io/StarWarsIntroCreator/#!/AKTjy2VjkQBEpB9AEgU-

“Exterminate them!”

As your ships closed in on the last Worldship, you knew for sure that victory was at hand. You stand in the bridge of the Ravager, your Super Star Destroyer. And before you now lay the wrecks and ruins of the Yuuzhan Vong Fleet, nothing more than piles of scabs and bones before the might of the Empire. You rub your chin, grinning at it all. Commander Fiennes looks back to you. “Sir. The Yuuzhan Vong Fleet is no more. The Empire can sleep soundly tonight! We've ran them out of our galaxy!” The crew bursts into applause as the Worldship ignites and falls into space. “Huzzah!” The crew breaks out into huzzahs, cracking open prepared cans of ale and wine.

Lord Vader comes in over the hologram. “Admiral. Your efforts in destroying the Yuuzhan Vong have not gone unnoticed. We will promote you to Grand Admiral post-haste and put as many as five hundred ships and myself under your command.”

“Thank you, Lord Vader.” You bow to him. “Give my regards to the Emperor.”

“Unfortunately, the sheer shock of you exterminating the Vong was too much for him. He's dead,” says Lord Vader. “There will be a new Emperor, I am looking at him right now in fact.” You smile, folding your arms. “We will discuss this later, Grand Admiral.” His hologram fades away.

“Oh, Admiral!” Finalizer hugs you from behind. “Now that the Vong are defeated, you can finally put a baby in me! Come now! Bed me so that we can produce an heir worthy of the Dark Side!”

“Never!” Resolute pushes Finalizer away. “The Admiral must give me a child worthy of restoring the Galactic Republic!”

“The Confederacy will rise again!” VP comes into the action, shoving them both aside. “None of you are worthy of bedding the Admiral! I do declare that we must make this a competition!”

“She's right!” says Finalizer. “We'll ALL have to sleep with the Admiral until all of us are pregnant! Then we can have the heirs fight each other!” The three of them press their chests against yours, looking up at you. “What say you, Admiral!?” Oh baby. Yes, yes, yes! SAY YES!

“Admiral!?”

“Admiral!?”

You crack open your eyes to see Redemption bent over you, a very coy smirk on her face. She holds a tray of coffee and breakfast in her hands as she watches you in bed. “My, my. You must have been having a very pleasant dream.”

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"The hell...?" You mumble as you flip through the files the Captain had secretly passed to you. Apparently, the spooks had reason to believe the Russians were being so antsy in the region because they were looking for a shipgirl. No words on her identity, but spies in Russia had been observing damaged Russian patrol ships being towed back into port.

Now, damaged ships wasn't all that uncommon, but it was the type of damage that had piqued the USN's interest. Most of the ships had been disabled by pinpoint, precise attacks right at their waterlines. Enough to slow down and cripple a ship through partial flooding, but not nearly enough to actually sink them. Definitely not the Abyssal MO.

So while you all OFFICIALLY out here to conduct freedom of navigation, you were also out here to "provide assistance" to "engaged Russian forces" if the need arose. Basically, find and extract the mystery shipgirl before the Russians did.

Oh right, and because going this far north put you all perilously close to the northern Dark Zone, Abyssal presence was high and ambushes were likely.

So... nothing too out of ordinary, actually.

Finally, the Captain had added a note that telling the rest of your squadron about the true nature of you mission would be at your discretion.

You don't know how long you've been in this place. Through the constant beatings and interrogation sessions you've lost track of time. The worst thing about it though is that little cunt prince who's name you've learned is Theodoric 'The Fair'. What a load of shiav. All he does is go on monologues about how great he is and that how he captured you and blah blah blah blah blah. He'll kneel in time. Every interrogation is also more or less the same. They beat you and yell "WHAT IS YOUR PLAN FOUL BEAST!" then throw you back in your cell like nothing happened and repeat the next day. You take in a load of clean air. It burns your lungs. Your cell is empty except for a single thin blanket. A guard is standing by your cell with spear in hand.

This thread is a recap for Exalted Quest's 119 threads up to now, for old and new players alike. (But especially for new players who'd like to get into Exalted Quest but are intimidated by the large archive.)

Exalted Quest has been a long runner and has amassed a long, convoluted plot and a ludicrous amount of NPCs. It's probably a very tough Quest to get into. On top of that, it's just back from a long hiatus, and I imagine that does not help.

I'd like to sum up the main plot and events up to now, and then continue the main story later in this same thread if possible.

I've decided to do this as a /qst/ thread rather than as an infodump on pastebin because I'd like to keep this interactive. Ask questions, offer clarifications, etc.

I apologize to the readers who have been following Exalted Quest for a long time and now get a recap thread after such a long hiatus, but I think giving a chance to new players to get in the Quest is important.

If you don't know what Exalted is, check the Exalted article on the 1d4chan wiki. If you have any sort of question, feel free to ask here now. This thread is specifically to get all things cleared for everyone, especially if you're a new player who wants to get into Exalted Quest but are not yet sure if you want to read all the old threads.

Here is the archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Tianna
My twitter is @Exaltedfag. I only post updates about the Quest and informing when the next thread will be.

I have an ask.fm you can ask any questions to if there is no active thread at the time. Here: http://ask.fm/Exaltedfag

The main character of Exalted Quest is Maka. She was created and developed by the players in the very first threads. I feel like that's important to point out: I didn't create Maka, the players did. Exalted Quest didn't start with a pre-generated character as MC.

Maka was the princess of Gem, a remote, fantastically rich city-state built in a volcano surrounded by a scorching desert. When a coup ousted her father and family, she had to flee, and ended up being separated from them.

She ended up in Tianna, a western island-kingdom. Tianna was later attacked by two Abyssals, powerful Deathknights serving one of the thirteen Deathlords. Demanding that Tianna submit to them, they invaded the capital via airship with their undead minions.

Maka Exalted. Faced with danger far beyond what a mortal could face, she suddenly received the soul of an ancient demigod, one of the 300 Solar Exalted created by the Unconquered Sun in the days of the Primordial War.

She fought the Abyssals back and saved the queen of Tianna, Amata, an old family friend. Amata is an Exalted too, a Terrestrial Exalted of the Air aspect (or so everyone thought at the time).

After some soul-searching, Maka tried to figure out why the Unconquered Sun chose her as one of his champions. She got her answers and kept them close to her heart ever since.
(related: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/30451664/#p30454947)

After this, while trying to help Amata with the repairs to the city walls, she meets with other Exalted, Lunar Exalted, which had lived in the wild north of the island as leaders of the barbarian tribes there. One of them, Tia, has a strong reaction upon seeing Maka and claims to be her husband. She also seemed not all right in the head right away. Still, they bond over punching some demon-blooded pirates together.

The Lunars agree to help Tianna if in exchange Tianna helps them to destroy a Faerie prince that occupies the western half of the island: Tarien Dorian.

After this, Maka has to deal with Dancing Smoke, Tianna's resident uppity volcano goddess. A possible ally against the Abyssals, but she asks for human sacrifice. Maka manages to persuade her otherwise.

The expedition against this Fae prince sees Maka commandeering three pirate ships, befriending a court of sea spirits and a god of the western plains, and taking home a subordinate to said Fae prince, Silk, who is pretty much adopted as Maka's personal pet.

In all this, however, Maka is seriously injured by another one of the Fae prince's underlings via mindgames, and the final assault is led by Tia.

You are Marcus Painel, the troubled son of the late assassin Lucien Painel, dead by your own hands. At the age of eighteen, you have already loved and lost, and the blood of dozens stains your hands a crimson red of retribution. But a chance meeting at the brink of death has found you as the bodyguard to Princess Ellana Crowmond, youngest of the royal family of the Aderaveth Empire. Inducted to her service as her Crownguard, you have sworn to keep her safe from harm by whatever means necessary.

Recently, your travels have led you to the river fortress of Alnewrich, governed by Lord Adamus Mazur. While he and Lord Kieran Pullman have taken an expeditionary force to quell a rebel garrison, you have seen fit to trace the steps of the assassin who came after Ellana. The trail you tease has lead you to the Alchemists’ Guild, and the daughter of the Grand Alchemist. And by…unorthodox means, you have secured yourself a reliable means of infiltration.

Having successfully made it into the inner sanctum of the Grand Alchemist, there is nothing standing between you and whatever dark secrets Megus Silvera could be hiding from the crown…

The architects of the guild designed the building in such a way that the high ceilings would require great beams to stabilize the overhead stone. Reinforced by iron bolts and no small amount of magic, the support pillars and shafts keep the domed and capped roof from collapsing in onto themselves. Ventilation seems to be a main concern as well as ensuring that the top is thick enough to keep the most severe of seasonal storms from bringing the building down on top of the lot of them.

There are some sections that dip low, forcing Claudia to keep a look out as you scurry from one corridor to the next, coming down from one rafter and then leaping back onto another. And that was just the main entrance to get into the long hallway of laboratories. Doubtless there will come harder challenges.

Regardless, you’re not one to complain. From the way the beams are placed at certain intervals, and interconnected from one cross-section to the next, maintenance seems to be something that is performed here. Of course it is. Nothing is this easy.

Muttering underneath your breath, you move on, hopping from post to post and hoping that tonight is not the scheduled time to inspect the rafters and ceilings. To your supreme pleasure, it is not. And the ambient torchlight is kept deliberately low, sealed within lamps at every two dozen paces. They will not risk open flame in this environment. All the better for you.

To your complete lack of surprise, there appear to be some people that are still in the building. There are alchemists that frown at beakers and flasks of unknown substances, occasionally adding a pinch of sulfur or rock salt into the mix. Nearby, bleary-eyed apprentices hold back yawns and groans of discomfort as they copy recipes and formulae from crumbling journals onto pristine sheets of vellum. And still there are those who simply just push carts of reagents and catalysts, to be bundled and prepared for transport or delivery to a customer.

More than once does Claudia get a few waves, some of which she returns with varying degrees of enthusiasm. “I’m happy for your success, Demien. Gretta, the order of powdered oyster shell and artichoke has come in for that special request potion. No, really, Henrick, I’m fine, I parted from Amadeo amicably at the inn…”

Eventually, she manages to make her way past her family, coming to a stop at the end of an abandoned hallway. There are no guards that are posted here, and nothing of interest save for a golden door. No, that’s not right. The door itself is painted gold, but you can see inlays of silver among the iron brace, among other symbols and metals sacred to the art of alchemy.

(cont.)
>>
“We’re here,” she whispers, fishing out the keys at her belt. She is careful not to make as much as a jangle as she inserts her key. “This door leads directly to the laboratory and quarters of the Grand Alchemist. We’ll have to go up a flight of stairs first…”

You check carefully around you before descending from the rafters. It is a controlled descent that has you rebounding from beam to stone wall until you find yourself beside the girl. At your slight nod, she turns the key, wincing at the CLUNK the lock makes as it disengages before shoving you through the door.

“Quickly!” She hisses, closing the door before pushing right at your back. “We don’t have all night!”
You quickly lose track of the number of stairs you have to traverse, stopping short of seventy three before you give up. And these are moderately sized steps! You no longer feel like you’re climbing up a magistrate’s domicile, but scaling the archetypal wizard’s tower. The Grand Alchemist must like his privacy. And space, if the protrusion from the rear of the guild building was any indication.

For a good reason, apparently. It’s hard for your mouth not to fall agape at the lab before you. The most sophisticated equipment lies before you, even more advanced than any you’ve ever seen, both in Karthmire and in the grand hall bellow. A portable stove, rows upon rows of beakers and flasks, and a set of tools that would make a priest jealous.

But it is the walls, walls upon walls of reagents and catalysts. Tiny bottles of feverdew extract, jars of pickled drakling eyes, even a bony talon of a great Whrelzwth Roc are but commonplace among the rarest ingredients you’ve ever laid eyes on.

Claudia seems to take some sort of pride. “Isn’t it wonderful? Father and I built it together a few years ago, using our own innovative designs. Careful cataloguing and more efficiency means less items and reagents needed to create a formula…”

A she rambles on, you can see a little ways to the right that there’s a door leading to what must undoubtedly be the Grand Master’s domicile. Bedchambers, personal study…and private archives..

>Search the quarters. Claudia takes the laboratory.
>>
You’re not sure what you were expecting when you split up to search your respective quarters. Silvera’s quarters seem to be the epitome of cleanliness. The man’s bed is perfectly made, all of the books are in order, whether they be in piles around the room or on shelves. There are no crumbs of bread or cheese on the desk, and the candle sticks on the holder are brand new.

All in all, it seems that the man’s very fastidious about keeping things in some sort of order.

…you don’t like it.

You don’t like it one bit.

There are a lot of books. Not nearly as many as the books in the Crowmonds’ personal library, but there are volumes that are as easily as thick as your fist. Old texts of alchemy, dating back to the founding of Aderaveth and the Bladebound Rebellion. And to your surprise, framed on the wall is an original formula for a hangover potion, penned on wyvernskin by none other than Treyu the Hunter, the oft rumored lover of Brynn the Breaker.

You check yourself before you get too excited at all the alchemical artifacts and relics from the history of the continent. There’s going to be time for that later. Best to start searching now and save your energy for when the bad thing happens. No, not “a bad thing”, but “the bad thing”.

It’s only inevitable.

Well, best get to searching.

"...'A Risque Repository of the most Ribald Tales'?" You shudder as you set that book back onto the nightstand. You just learned more about Silvera than you had any desire to, and not in a good way.
