I think Taleb makes sense, but it irks me that he is retweeting PrisonPlanet, Stefan Molyneux and Baboon Mindset.

Hello, I started a thread yesterday on what books to read from HEGEL but instead I got allot of recommendations from other writers to read first.
I appreciate the advice, but I'm quite familiar with greek philosophy, medieval, eastern, kant, locke, Hobbes, Thomas Aquino etc etc.

I'm really just looking for stuff from Hegel.
English language only my german is very limited. I'm not familiar with Hegel and would like to start reading some of his work.

Hegel is a pain in the ass to read. I am also quite familiar with other kinds of philosophy, even philosophy BASED on Hegel. But Hegel still is a pain in the ass and a very slow read for me. Tried several times and given up.

I usually hear recommended that his lectures on History is his best introductory work. It's a lecture he made after realizing that even after years of university none of his students understood his philosophy so he does some explanation of terms and so on.

'Start with the Greeks' means read their philosophy and literature, not modern writing about them.
Not that doing so will hurt, but I just wanted to make sure you understand.

However these mytholigies in original form are not annotated or appended so I should get a gestalt of Greek history before reading them.

The graph I chose for starting with the greeks recommended this book as a first read and I cannot obtain it so I want to know if a 20th century alternative which is easily accesible through audio and pdf forms would aid me as much
>>
>>9855722
Not referring to the 'mytholigies [sic]', it's the plays and epic poems. The myths are only useful in that they're good annotations to those works. You needn't get annotations on the annotations, else you'll need annotations on the annotations on the annotations too ... where does it end?

What is Speer as a writer like? His writing and descriptions of people sound great from the Goodreads quotes I have read.

>“By no means would I describe Adolph Hitler as sexually normal in his relationships with women. In the case of Eva Braun in particular, it seems clear to me that aside from occasional passionate episodes there was no sexual activity at all for long periods of time. The effect of this on Hitler I do not know, but Eva Braun's misery was well-known at headquarters. During the long dry spells she was irritable, impatient and quick to anger. She smoked much more and was incessantly lighting one cigarette after another. By contrast, when once in a great while Hitler's more human feelings expressed themselves in a sudden cloudburst, her manner changed completely. Eva at such times was radiant, flushed with happiness. Her natural warmth and high spirits returned, and she seemed to sparkle again like the cheerful and spontaneous girl she once was.

>Though it seems obscene to pity one individual human being with so many millions dead, I do believe that Eva Braun was the loneliest woman I ever knew.”

Great descriptive prose and eye-opening commentary. Only distraction is hair shirt Speer has to wear throughout, lest he appear gloating.

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me.
I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: All times I have enjoy'd
Greatly, have suffer'd greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone, on shore, and when
Thro' scudding drifts the rainy Hyades
Vext the dim sea: I am become a name;
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known; cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honour'd of them all;
And drunk delight of battle with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and forever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains: but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence, something more,
A bringer of new things; and vile it were
For some three suns to store and hoard myself,
And this gray spirit yearning in desire
To follow knowledge like a sinking star,
Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.

This is my son, mine own Telemachus,
To whom I leave the sceptre and the isle,—
Well-loved of me, discerning to fulfil
This labour, by slow prudence to make mild
A rugged people, and thro' soft degrees
Subdue them to the useful and the good.
Most blameless is he, centred in the sphere
Of common duties, decent not to fail
In offices of tenderness, and pay
Meet adoration to my household gods,
When I am gone. He works his work, I mine.

There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail:
There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me—
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Were beth they that biforen us weren,

Hi /lit

I want to know more about the philosophies but I don't want to read every book on every philosophy, I don't hav enough time.

Is there someplace where I can get a basic outline of each philosophy before I start with a particular philosopher?

I strongly suggest against this. Second hand accounts are usually, in our commercial and adulterated world, are misleading and academic ones are too long and boring and pointless without reading the original work.

What you can do is not read entire books but just skim through them for an hour or so to give you a general idea of what kind of a person the philosopher is and what his notable thoughts are, but of course everyone has their own interpretation of things but there are also common things that everyone can agree upon. Does that make sense?
Also, kids here in this board havent even read aristotle or descartes so they might me misleading and something like quora answers or university lecture notes might be more credible sources for these kinds of questions.

>was casually talking about freud to my mom last month and she acted like it was weird.

Of all the people you could talk to about Freud that is indeed a weird choice to go with.
>>
Freud wrote a lot of stuff besides his bit about the Oedipus complex; the fact that that's what people focus on about him says more about them than about him.
>>
>>9855559

Girls don't like Freud mate. His pop culture image makes him appear very phallic-centric which makes them feel quite insecure and as if they're not talking to them personally. A valid criticism I think. Plus, a lot of people (usually women) have a rosy view of people's psychological makeup. Talking to them about the views of a man who most certainly thought everybody had unconscious drives that impeded their ability to connect with anybody else in a healthy way (see: civilisation and its discontents) is anathema to them.

I have never understood what is the appeal of poetry. To me, it is just pretentious prose. In the time it takes for me to decipher the meaning of a stanza, I could read a few pages from a normal book and get more of out of it. I am not saying I am right, quite honestly, I think I am in the wrong, but this is why I have come forth to ask why is poetry so appreciated. Is it the subjectivity factor that comes into play? The artistic way in which an author expresses his or her views on life with the help of figures of speech? The way one can express such feelings in a structured and planned way with a rhythm and rhymes (which is some even lack), or am I missing the forrest for the trees?

I shall apologise for my ignorancy in advance.

I used to think the same way. I too thought I must be wrong. The truth is that one day it will "click", you'll read a poem that hits a nerve and you won't look back. I bought my fiance this Everyman's Library collection of cat poems, thinking it was cute. She asked me to read a few out loud to her so i did. Most of them were just funny, and a few were a little sad. But then, out if nowhere, one of them got me so choked up I couldn't finish reading it. It was a strange moment, but since then I've been giving poetry a real chance. A fucking cat poem opened my eyes.
>>
>>9855554
So it just takes the right poem at the right time. Then, I shall keep an open mind for when that time finally arrives. Thank you.
>>
>>9855544
Why do you think that you could get more out of a few pages of a book than a stanza of poetry?

Anyone else listen to music while they read?

Where should I begin?
Ditching serious reading in favour of visual media (movies/tv shows/youtube) was a mistake.
Reading books stimulated my intellect, books gave me food for thought, gave me new ideas, new perspectives , in fact books sharpened my mind. Even the mediocre books had good bits in them.
It's been 2 years since I read a proper book.
I only ditched reading because it consumed more time than the visual media, but in retrospect when I think about it, the time invested in reading was worth it.
I used to quote many interesting quotes and ideas from my readings to my female friends and they were visibly impressed, they asked me how do I know these things.

On the contrary, visual media has done no such thing. Infact it has reduced my IQ by couple of points and also reduced my attention span.
Even the best of the best movies are not that intellectually stimulating enough when compared to great books.
So what have I missed /lit/ ? Where should I begin again, Your suggestions deeply appreciated.

I just started economics in one lesson, the author doesn't shy away from dropping names and challenging popular ideas of the time period. I feel like I am reading a literary diss track. Are you aware of any other books similar to this? Works that 'expose' or 'challenge' consensus and redpill the reader.
