The modern Foucault

I started reading the Summa Theologica (GBWW edition) and it really surprises my how readable it is. To be honest, some of it requires a dictionary as there's not enough in the context to fully define some complex terminology, but for the most part it's really well put together.

Here's how it's set up

I. Positive or negative statement about the topic
Objection 1
Objection 2
Objection 3
II. Response from the author affirming or denying the original
Response to Objection 1
Response to Objection 2
Response to Objection 3

The entire book is like that. It's pretty awesome actually. I wish more theological and philosophical works were set up this well.

Isn't that like 5 volumes? Are you reading an abridged version? Are we allowed to do that? I want to Maneuver through the Medievals but I don't know if I want to commit to so much.

My friend has just released a book on amazon and wants me to pay me to buy it and write a review so he can "get people interested". He has no previously released work and is a complete nobody. How do I explain to him that it's a completely retarded idea?

help me anons

>i believe that humans have not the means to prove or disprove god, and as such we cant say much about the matter
>however i believe that something as complex as life could not have occured due to chance alone, and as such believe that their is a god
>if anything, this god is uncaring, or perhaps even actively evil, as he allows the suffering of man to continue, and not just the suffering of man but also the suffering ofinnocents (ie babies who have yet to sin)
>i would like to believe that through alleviating the suffering of man, you can create meaning in what i think is an otherwise inherently meaningless existance
>however i dont believe this concept passionately: logically it seems true, and i would like to believe it is true, but i have yet to prove it to myself
>the other option is to belive their is no meaning in life, and that one cannot even create meaning for himself. this state of affairs is one i cannot live with
>usually i feel very little compassion for other people, but at the same time i feel moral guilt. I cannot find a rational argument for morality, but still i feel bad about immoral actions (hurting someone else, stealing, etc) (also as far as i can tell i have classically christian morals but i am no christian)
>on one hand i wish to improve myself, improve society, and improve the world, to help alleviate the suffering of man and thus create meaning for myself and help my fellow man
>on the other hand i want to chase carnal pleasure and accept that life doesnt have meaning.
>the morals i cant rationally justify tell me that the first option is the only true option
>logically i feel as if i should choose the second option, but this feels to me like "giving up" (also nihilism is an edgy fedora meme and i feel stupid saying "life has no meaning xd")

what the fuck do i do
who should i read to shed light on these issues

Being and Nothingness or The Ethics of Ambiguity. Being and Nothingness might be tough but there are plenty of resources to help you tackle it.

Thanks anon, ill give them a read. If it helps im currently reading the brothers k, about halfway through

Apply youe favorite method of critique to pic related. I'll start:

>Psychoanalytic
>The River is the barrier archetype between conscious and unconscious experience, its crossing being a transition from ego to superego, or from the comforts of the womb into the chaos of the unknown.
>"The substance in his mouth" is, of course, the penis.
>The other dog in the water, a threat and the object of his greed and envy, his father
>the bark is rebellion against the father. But the father, all-powerful, is not there.
>He loses the food. He is castrated.

Ignore the moral.

Go.

Queer thoery:
The dog's fascination with its own image is reflective of the desire for a partner with the same gender identity. He lusts after the other dog's "morsel of flesh" (male member). This act thereby emasculates him, and he loses his own "morself of flesh" (male member). This act of self-emasculation is brought on by the inherent self-desire of the homosexual mindset.

Has anyone read this book here? Opinions on it?

It's a good read, nothing special. You could probably finish it in one sitting. The title story has some really good prose. The religious imagery involving baptism is handled really well.
>>
this was the first piece of american literature I picked on my own.
I found it very well written and the atmosphere remindes me of apocalypse now.
As I'm not a native speaker I enjoyed the simple and colloquial language

Tim O'Brien did a really good job, it puts you into the shoes of a Vietnam soldier in multiple different ways. It's worth getting.

So I'm about 300 pages into the brothers k. While the arguments dosto presents about god and the Catholic Church are interesting, it's nothing mind boggling. So far it just seems to be the story of a bickering family. What am I missing? I was told this book was life changing. Maybe I'm too stupid for it?

What are some good nonfiction reads about the cold war?
3 posts and 2 images submitted.

>>9901163
I really enjoyed The Cold War: A New History by John Gaddis, but it's the only book I've read on the topic. Also, I wish it spent more time fleshing out the end of the war.

It's a surprisingly easy read though. I'd definitely recommend it, unless you already know a ton about the Cold War.

isn't it weird tho how if you say capitalism sucks ass and we should gas the capitalists that's cool no one gets blasted over it, but if you say you should gas someone else its a shitstorm, whats up with that
>>
>>9901186
Being a capitalist is defined by your actions, your role in society, and your effect on other people. Being brown isn't.

Just finishing reading Phaedo, cried a fair bit towards the end, is this normal?

Congrats, anon, you discovered that philosophy can be both poetic and meaningful. Hope you continue down this road.

So is having an emotional reaction to philosophy something uncommon? I'm only starting this stuff so don't really know how other people react to philosophy apart from people in my uni tutorial which isn't saying much
