Actually a fan. Play it As it Lays and Year of Magical Thinking are both solid

I'm reading her omnibus right now, actually. I've already read Slouching Toward Bethlehem and The White Album. She's the clear-eyed lucid foil to Gonzo journalism and absolutely hypnotizing to read.

She apparently wrote most of the essays in Slouching Toward Bethlehem while drunk and popping uppers, which is interesting to me.

unironically ask reddit. i mean this as an insult and display of my erudition of course, but /r/ books is also more likely to give you a helpful response than /lit/ which reads almost exclusively canon works ie not contemporary

How do you guys go about picking cool sounding names? Serious question

i go to graveyards and pick names at random
>>
>>9903716
some of the best characters in literature have plain names. this isn't due to any secret, it's just because people are called things.

don't aim for cool
>>
>>9903716
1) ethnic makeup of the area of the character's origin / their family
2) class
3) mythological resonance (the more oblique the better)

Concerning 9/11:

'What has happened is - now you all have to turn your brains around - the greatest work of art there has ever been. That minds could achieve something in one act, which we in music cannot even dream of, that people rehearse like crazy for ten years, totally fanatically for one concert, and then die. This is the greatest possible work of art in the entire cosmos. Imagine what happened there. There are people who are so concentrated on one performance, and then 5000 people are chased into the Afterlife, in one moment. This I could not do. Compared to this, we are nothing as composers... Imagine this, that I could create a work of art now and you all were not only surprised, but you would fall down immediately, you would be dead and you would be reborn, because it is simply too insane. Some artists also try to cross the boundaries of what could ever be possible or imagined, to wake us up, to open another world for us.'
Karlheinz Stockhausen, Hamburg, September 2001.

He means that the attack was a powerful expression that seduced the entire world, and hence art.

Stockhausen was always interested in systems and formulae, that these would later mutate for him into catechisms, mantras, rituals etc. is no surprise. He was fascinated in and devoted to the idea of practising music as a religion, of course he was impressed that people could orchestrate something so devastating. He did later clarify this statement, which he claimed was misquoted and out of context, to say that it was Lucifer's greatest work of art, related to a question concerning the Lucifer character in his Licht opera cycle.

What is your favourite chapter or section from a book of literature? (A scene or even an act from a play would be fine too!)

Mine's Quentin's section in The Sound and the Fury. I also love "Circe" in Joyce's Ulysses.

The closing arguments in TBK. Also the chapter preceding The Grand Inquisitor has always stuck with me because of the fact that Dostoevsky took actual Russian court cases as examples.

>The rest of the Bible
>The poetry of Tennyson, Yeats, Eliot, Byron, and many others.
