>Idleness, we are accustomed to say, is the root of all evil. To prevent this evil, work is recommended. But it is just as easy to see from the dreaded occasion as from the recommended remedy that this whole view is of very plebeian extraction. Idleness as such is by no means a root of evil; on the contrary, it is a truly divine life, if one is not bored.
>Idleness is not the evil; indeed, it may be said that everyone who lacks a sense for it thereby shows that he has not raised himself to the human level.

What's a book you've read that you wouldn't be surprised to find out that you're the only person on this board who has read it?

Guys I just started reading this book. I am only about 20% through the thing, but every time I read, I begin to feel more and more confident about my self. I feel enlightened.
Do you guys also feel this way?

boy when you finish it do we have a surprise for you lol
>>9976117
If I ever finish it. This book is loooooooooooooooong.
I am two hundred pages into this and it is quite possibly the worst prose I have ever encountered. The dialogue is either cliché bad Hollywood movie tier or just completely incomprehensible and the magic wooden puppet is just embarrassing. The coin spinning metaphor is already completely over done to the point of obnoxiousness. Yet I find myself strangely intrigued by the plot and the world building. Is that the case with this series? Cool story/world but terribly written because I can probably deal with this if the story is meaty enough.
>>9976058
Can you post some quotes?
The series presumably becomes exponentially better.
But I refuse to read it cause the first in op is so bad you can't believe the rest won't be nothing more than mediocre.
>>9976058
The prose improves a lot after the first book. If you find it intriguing, you would probably enjoy reading some of the sequels.
Women can't be good writ-

Infinite Jest of Oryx and Crake
>>9975740
I don't get the appeal of the road. Maybe I'm biased because I had to read it for school but the characters were just not interesting to me. The world was just bland as well. I know that was kind of the point but thats a shit point. What insight do I gain from the book? The relationship between the father and the son is completley stereotypical. He teaches and loves the son and the kid then learns to live without him after the book is over.
The writing is a unique style but after a while it just becomes tedious to read. Mabe you can enlighten me anon.

Are there any books you just flat out refuse to read? If so, why?
Anything by pynchon
I refuse to read The "Holy" Bible. It is a collection of irrational mythical tales written by stone age farmers. The people writing the "scriptures" had none of the benefits of science and access to none of our advanced knowledge. If anyone suggests I read it, well, I suggest you take a science class.
Please answer truthfully. If this little boy, in his exhaustion and tears, asked you to destroy the entire universe, and you actually had the power to do so. Would you do this for him?

Does this board need moderation?
More discussion of novelists and poets and less discussion of "lit humor", "redpill", general questions that are only slightly related to literature, & Science Fiction & Fantasy, I would think is needed for there to be a point to coming here in the first place.
Only if I get to mod
If you want more moderation go to reddit
I occasionally make blatant, completely unrelated to literature shitposts just to check if there are still mods left
