I don't go on any board expecting serious discussion I just want to meme about things that interest me that normal people don't care about and to get recs. Why do you want serious discussion? At best you're going to get high school tier readings of authors who've been discussed to death by more competent people.

Mods are always a lowest common denominator thing. For some strange reason, the only people who want to be moderators tend to be internet circlejerk namefag type people, the kind of guys who hang out in discords and use tripcodes. They're always strangely Reddity, strangely unable to take a joke, and they always end up obsessively hating their userbase and jerking off to their authority over it.

Even now, the only moderation the board receives is that some mod will ban an obviously tongue-in-cheek joke post because he saw it in the report queue without knowing its context.

A janitor on the other hand is OK for deleting extremely off topic threads. If he gets overbearing, you can just complain on /q/ and (ideally) he'll lighten up a bit.

memes aside, we should claim the /lit/ board on 8ch and migrate there

Every good forum I've seen where the moderation was the moderators' ideas only has seen all the content die.

I belonged to one place which used be pretty wild, and when the moderators, who weren't content producers but people who like chitchat, tried to tame it back, all the PhDs left.

The moderators didn't see this as a problem but most of the content of the site worth a damn (number puzzles, competitions, zombie sightings) was designed by the guys who left.
So yeah, you can not swear and also most the games end at the third level instead of having the potential for infinite regression. Everyone else will hang around for that, right?

The content from the mods is mostly "Wow you guys aren't producing enough content! I guess that must be my job now :DD How's everyone's family?", whereas before the mods set in we had people who were going to meet up and duke out their Edison v Tesla problems off board.

The best thing about 4chan is the anonymity and hands off moderation. You really don't realize how amazing this website is or how much freedom we have. As others have said, if you want more controlled discussion where you are protected from "shitty" posts (which often means posts that you might find offensive), you should find another website with more strict moderation. Some people can't handle 4chan's great design and philosophy and they should go elsewhere.

I basically agree that there is too much pol posting on lit nowadays, but don't think 'conservative' opinions should be banned altogether. The problem with pol is that they just state their ill thought out opinions as fact, without giving an explanation or engaging with contentious points. E.g. 'x is degenerate' is just a guy's emotion charged reaction to something but on pol they espouse it as an evident axiom. An educated board deserves better, but if people can provide deeper explanations of their viewpoints, perhaps citing literature to do so, then this can be allowed.
