Just start going to local art galleries, you'll eventually meet plenty of weirdos and artists. My city, Kansas City, has dozens of rebellious weirdos doing performance art, noise music, painting, public sex, drugs, etc etc. Just don't be disappointed if you're a right-winger. Artists tend to be leftists on average, especially the underground variety.

Nowhere is the hostility of the Anglo-American tradition toward the dialectical more apparent, however, than in the widespread notion that the style of these works is obscure and cumbersome, indigestible, abstract—or, to sum it all up in a convenient catchword, Germanic. It can be admitted that it does not conform to the canons of clear and fluid journalistic writing taught in schools. But what if those ideals of clarity and simplicity have come to serve a very different ideological purpose. in our present context, from the one Descartes had in mind? What if, in this period of the overproduction of printed matter and the proliferation of methods of quick reading, they were intended to speed the reader across a sentence in such a way that he can salute a readymade idea effortlessly in passing, without suspecting that real thought demands a descent into the materiality of language and a consent to time itself in the form of a sentence?

Why aren't you trying Kindle Direct Publishing, anon? They now make paperbacks too. And it's free.

I intend to self publish. However I don't expect I will be particularly successful. I haven't any notion of how to effectively self-promote, nor do I have the funds to get Amazon to do it for me.

If someone has any suggestions, I'm open to them.

That's fair enough. I'll probably just shill a bit on Goodreads and social media. I'm sure I'll hate every second of it.

Is it me, or has "Harry Potter" logic infected most forms of popular writing?

Everything seems to depend on flashbacks of flashbacks of flashbacks. Taking a semi-respectable piece of popular writing, how interesting would this character's story be if it were told in chronological order?

I'm not talking about In Medias Res. When writers do that, they start the story about a third of the way through it chronologically to catch the reader's attention, then explain the beginning, and resume. That is just jumpstarting things.

What I'm complaining about is an endless sinking into the swamp of unrevealed, cobbled together, fanfictiony backstory.

The "Harry Potter" style of writing has old friends of your father's second cousin appearing out of the woodwork every time the story requires it.

Every second household item has a tragic role in a dramatically revealed piece of backstory about the protagonist's mother's dorm-mate's descent into darkness, or whatever, and how his mother's dorm mate orchestrated the whole whatever so that she could have revenge for having her cute pumps ruined, or something.

Prequels within prequels within fanfiction.

There's something deeply feminine about this helpless reliance on circumstance and history and predetermined events. Why don't popular (pulp) characters make things happen anymore? There's a slide into reactivity and lore, and it turns out that the janitor was a veteran in the war against the guy, and has been helping the protagonist secretly all along... No.

No, no, nope. I'd like to burn these cliches to the ground. I need to write a piece of popular fiction for economic reasons, but if I'm going to sell out, I also want to burn these cliches to the fucking ground while I'm at it.

What do you think, /lit/? How would you do it?

It is indeed sad to see that the dullest franchise in the history of book franchises has turn this timeline of ours into the dullest timeline of all possible timelines. Seriously, each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though r-right
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

For about 4 years now I've been a big fan of Joe Rogan's podcast but I started to recognize a pattern in his rhetoric. His level of bias and hypocrisy blatantly present themselves when someone point the flaws in his heroes. I used to think that he was really open minded and fair in his criticism of certain people but I feel like he always echo the people that he likes "his buddies" in a positive light even if they or their ideologies are heavily flawed.

I'm deeply troubled by this discovery....

How do I reduce my vocabulary enough to write a YA novel?

I mean, how are reading levels determined? How do I know which words are too difficult?

I've become almost completely numb to the feeling of "pretentiousness." What I mean is that I only feel irritation at unusual word use when I know they are being misused. The rest of the time I will "drink anything in a glass," so to speak.

This means that I've lost relevant forms of self-awareness when it comes to my own style and the prickly temperaments of underage readers, who could "detect" pretentiousness in a vacuum cleaner's user manual. This is where I need your help, /lit/.

based on what you've written here, your natural level of vocabulary is already appropriate for a YA novel, even with a little bit of showing off
>>

Oh, wonderful. Now, for my own private and future benefit, could you tell me how you determined that, or is it a woman's intuition kind of deal?

I feel very attracted to his paintings, so I would want to learn more about the man and the painter.

There are several things I disagree with Land on, but I like the Land meme because it demonstrates that interesting thinkers are not necessarily always left wingers, and suggests a way that kids can draw from some of the useful elements in theory while disregarding or reformatting/mutating the rest.

There hadn't been that many examples of anyone before - besides Deleuze - who would participate in theory while flouting certain Marxist presumptions (presumptions which a lot of students felt - given the previous examples/culture - that you had to accept wholesale).

And thanks now to several strange vectors, interesting aesthetic and philosophical thinkers/artists can explore freely beyond the confines of poststructuralist and even leftist logic. 4chan even does this in its own anonymous and memetic expression.

The Landian meme is literally a weaponized thought function sweeping young minds in order to prepare them for thinking beyond stale leftism. Similar to /pol/, which I also disagree with on so many points, but still admire and sometimes might inadvertently support as an entity for un-Enlightening young people with cult-like effectiveness.
