Firearms technology has basically reached its cap. From here we can research more durable materials and whatnot but the mechanism and shit will essentially stay the same. Considering the B-52 has been in service for over 50 years, StG-44s still see combat in Syria, and most modern sniper rifles are still based on a bolt action system from the 1880s, I don't think it's out of this world to imagine that 100 years from now people might still be using AR-type firearms, just constructed from super durable, super light materials or something

You've basically invented a very expensive rock salt shell. Rock salt isn't typically seen as lethal.

Better to have him carry a variety of different shot types based on real world shells. There's plenty of cool (and practical) stuff out there if you're willing to do the research; Dragon's Breath, PDX-1, saboted slugs etc.
