Is nationalism a modern concept product of the emergence of the nation states?

It seems that the concept of nationalism as understood nowadays wasn't the norm. For example, I've read that in the Caliphate, Bedouins were used to move freely across the land as the concept of frontier did not exist besides outside the lands under islamic rule. Apparently the division of the MENA in artificial nation states, besides the ethnoreligious conflicts, it also affected bedouins life style as having strict boundaries was something purely new for them. Similar things with USSR probably.

So, is nationalism a modern meme?

>From a political or sociological outlook, there are three main paradigms for understanding the origins and basis of nationalism. The first, known as primordialism or perennialism, sees nationalism as a natural phenomenon. It holds that, although the concept of nationhood may be recent, nations have always existed. The second paradigm is ethnosymbolism, which is a complex perspective seeking to explain nationalism by contextualizing it throughout history as a dynamic, evolutionary phenomenon and by further examining the strength of nationalism as a result of the nation's subjective ties to national symbols imbued with historical meaning. The third and most dominant paradigm is modernism, which sees nationalism as a recent phenomenon that needs the structural conditions of modern society in order to exist.

It's from a genuine Roman historical source, the Historia Augusta, but it was written quite a while after Gallienus lived. So, maybe it really happened, we'll never know for sure.

In socialistic systems, isn't there a natural tendency towards central planning? I don't see how in practicality you could have everything be owned by decentralized councils of workers. How will the people at a steel mill for instance know how much to produce and be able to exchange that for living necessities? If there isn't a central planning, wouldn't there inherently need to be a market mechanism? What would the currency be?

If there is central planning, doesn't that de facto create a class system where some group controls the means of production by dictating how they are to be used? What variable do central planners optimize for when creating their plans?

The flaws of the Soviet system are well known and easily recognized by anybody who is even slightly economically literate. You're not really breaking any new ground here, although there is nothing at all wrong with repeating something that is true.

I'm not necessarily asking them such that they are "novel" questions, I'd like to know generally what the responses are from Socialists. I'm finding it hard to find a website where I can ask these questions with a presumption of good faith

Neo-Marxists still believe possible central planning of the economy. check this pdf. It's like the holy bible of the matter in leftypol.

Were the borders of ancient Egypt the same as the British drawn borders? How come most of the ancient Egyptian sites and findings are in upper Egypt? Didn't ancient Egyptians also enslave other Africans, why then is the Arab slave trade said to have "blackened" the population?

Did you guys know there's a Museum of Ukrainian Liberation Movement in London? I went there earlier today to clear up some of my own understanding (I'm kind of guilty of falling into RT's narrative after Maidan.) Will post more info if there's an interest. Here's the museum's history, it's so unique I figured a lot of you would enjoy it.

>A pub was bought in London by Ukrainian exiles in the height of the Cold War, either before or very soon after Bandera's assassination
>It was known to be a printing press because of the sounds that were heard from the building, publishing exile papers and pamphlets
>Opens its doors as a museum in the early 60s centering around Stepan Bandera and other independence leaders, and is very niche; The last entry in their log book is from 2016 and it's not open on set hours
>They have preserved everything in the finest detail; Sketches, pens, pencils, the suit Stepan was wearing on his last day (still with specks of blood on it), his curtains and typewriters, OUN information pamphlets

They're cataloging the information from Ukrainian archives that have only been open a few years, now that Ukraine is off the Russian leash. It's cool to see people with such passion, will info dump (it's late tonight, if there's interest I'll post more tomorrow too)

Most of what I have is video, which isn't too good; The museum is a warm, small room in the back of a flat which is used to archive Ukrainian history. The main guy there is an archivist, and has been doing amazing work since the Soviet archives were officially opened to international researchers in 2015.

This is just one wall of one room; There were books like this on all 4 walls, stacked up in the hallway, on the walls in other rooms, and in the basement too. They're doing amazing work to teach the history of Ukrainian independence movements and Holodomor - a subject that could only be studied from records smuggled out by exiles, before.

From what I've heard, there were some instances of crimes, but they were exaggerated by Soviets who feared a 300,000 strong post-WW2 army threatening to break off the part of the USSR which brought them something like 40% of their grain and 1/3 of their steel. It's since been admitted that the infamous picture of kids wrapped to a tree with barbed wire was a woman who went crazy and did it herself, which the Russians knew but ran with, and I think the monument to it has since been taken down. There were splits in the separatist organizations, also - before anyone knew that the Germans were carrying out the Holocaust, Holodomor was still fresh in everyone's mind, and some saw the Germans as liberators, and afterwards as the lesser evil. On top of this, all of the records were kept a secret until the pro-Russian government was ousted, and the records are now open to the public.

There have been occasional protests, I saw the video of Graham Phillips. It would've been interesting for him to have just done the tour, and talked calmly with them, in stead of throwing around the narrative that he was a Nazi; He was put in a concentration camp after refusing to rewrite the independence of the new Ukrainian state to make it a German state; His brothers (three, I think) were killed by the Germans, and also his 2 sisters.

You can find similar history in Finland and the Baltics.
