Why did Romans keep women around?
Considering that they had arguably the most homoerotic culture of human history, and that women don't make good soldiers or builders or administrators (in this case they weren't allowed to), why would the Romans waste food on them? Shouldn't a few stud females suffice?

In 1968 the Iraq government distributed to the farmers some wheat seeds covered in a red insecticide. They told them that those seeds were of higher quality because they were resistant to pest, and that they should ONLY BE USED FOR SEEDING.
A lot of farmers didn't believe them, and fed them to their cattle, which then died. Some even ate them, thinking the red coating was tomato sauce. They got extremely sick, some even became blind.
Those who survived, seeing those seeds weren't good for consumption, dumped them all in rivers, causing a mass fish extinction.
I do not know what lesson to draw from this. I just wanted to share it.

Long time lurker, and sorry if this has already been asked (I'm pretty sure it hasn't), but I'm interested in North African history (particularly Carthage and pre-Hellenic Egypt, am even studying Ancient Egypt at here at uni).
Anyway, I digress. This interest in North Africa got me looking into Sub-Saharan Africa. That's barely talked about, right? Maybe it's just uncommon history.
So I looked it up, and I was gobsmacked. There is not a single civilisation, a single invention, or even a single figure of note in all of Southern Africa. Their history can be summed up as:
>dick around in the jungle for 50,000 years (we don't know, since they didn't even have wroting!)
>whites show up and buy some of you
>go back to dicking around in the jungle for another 400 years
>whites come back and conquere you
>dick around for another 100 years
>become independent
Why is this? Why was Africa the black sheep of continents? Even South America managed not one, but two civilisations.

Thing is - the worst pathological torturers/rapists/murderers would be the ones who could do their thing with impunity - which mean they never got caught. There were times in the medieval period where the homicide rates were off the charts, chances are there were some serial killers then who make all "modern" ones look like a joke.
I wouldn't consider any leaders to be the most "evil". Because if they were capable of holding together a nation or army they inivitably made some peoples lives better, and they were capable of some human interaction. The worst would have to be some lone-wolf fuck-up.
