Did the Romans have any cool mythology? All I've heard about from that department is werewolves. Everything else is stolen Greek stuff.
While yes, a lot of it is stolen Greek stuff, the Romans did make it their own. Comparing the differences between Ares and Mars really helps you understand the differences between Roman and Greek Culture.
>Ares
>Represents the chaos and bloodbaths of war (Athena represents cunning and strategy)
>Total Jerk, literally the only positive part of his personality is his devotion to his daughters
>Despite being the God of war, he loses almost every fight he gets into
>Portrayed as an imbecile
>Mars
>God of war in all regards, and also agriculture
>Portrayed as the ideal citizen-soldier
>Merciful and just

Rome literally adds other people's gods into their Pantheon. Particularly that of the conquered.
Good examples are the Celtic Goddess Epona, which also became the Roman Goddess of Horses and Egypt's Isis, who became a major cult-figure.
Furthermore the Romans worshipped their ancestors while the Greeks didn't. Like the Chinese, the Romans saw their ancestors as minor dieties who had a direct influence over their lives as opposed to the Gods who managed greater concerns.

Werewolves are greek, from arcadia

The Jew of Linz is a historical fiction at best. They did go to the same school but it's unlikely they ever personally knew each other since Wittgenstein was moved a grade forward, while Hitler failed a year.
In the same book it is also stated that Wittgenstein was a Soviet spy during WW2, which is ridiculous

>come up with Indiana Jones-like story where a hero searches for the nails that nailed Christ to the cross
>Professor (a man with two PhDs) says "Ehhh, no, that's not believable. I worked on a film with Burt Lancaster in the 70's that took place in the 1870's, and we wanted to maintain historical accuracy, so we didn't use nails. If there were no nails in 1870, there certainly weren't any in the time of Christ. Rewrite"
>can't tell if he's joking
>laugh
>"Is something funny?"
Long story short, this professor said to send him an email tonight with history of the nail. When it was invented, specifically.
Is he right, though? Were there no nails until 1870? Am I really wrong?
According to the Wikipedia article on nails, nails have existed since ancient times. Makes sense to me, given how simple they are.
Ask him why there was a 1717 committee in Rome to debate the authenticity of the claim that the Iron Crown of Lombardy contained one of the nails used to crucify him.
>>3314357
Nails exist since fucking Bronze Age at least.
How come Persia, unlike Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa, never became Arabised despite being part of the Arab caliphate for hundreds of years? (Aside from the Ahwaz area)
>>3314319
Afroasiatic languages like Aramaic and Berber were close enough to Arabic to make the transition easy. Persia areas spoke Indo-european languages.

They had a long history of independence, and they cleverly converted to a heresy early on, which allowed them to take control over their religion (and with it, their culture).

Is Chomsky right? Was the Soviet Union not real socialism? I mean the workers clearly did not have control over the means of production.

there has been no seal communist country or a true socialist country, that begs the question if the system is actually achievable at all or if Stalinism and its ilk is the only possible outcome of that path
Yes, we have been convinced the Soviet Union was socialist because of American and Soviet propaganda. The truth is real socialism hasn't been tried yet.

Is Christianity idolatry?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxm26c4rklk
>>3313909
Some Christians are idolators, but the real reason so many of them will burn is for the vile doctrine of the Trinity, a pagan innovation found NOWHERE in the Bible that breaks the second commandment (the most important commandment).
Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
It seems like Jews get to be God's pets/servants but no one else does unless if you want take 10 years to convert and possibly not even accepted afterwards.
Serious question, how is it not hypocritical for Britain and France to call out Germany for invading Poland, when they had imvaded and occupied a third of the world?
I know /his/ has a hate boner for Germany, but seriously, HOW is it not hypocritical?
>>3313889
the anglo is a perfidious creature, morality is a foreign concept to him
>>3313889
In the greater scope of history, sure, Germany was just another player on the international stage trying their hand at empire after being denied it so many years. But, at the time they did invade Poland it was an extremely provocative act by a country that was supposed to be humbled after already causing one of the world's most destructive wars up to that point.

Even as a Frenchman I must say I envy the incredibly adventurous life of these men. Being a boy from Coventry, ending up patroling on the banks of the Ganges, with a colonial hat and a Webley in the hand, it must have been something.
Thank god
I can't stop reading Hume and Smith in particular...Theory of moral Sentiments, Inquiry into Human Understanding, Wealth of Nations...everything is so clear now. Any other Scots you would recommend?
No, you've read the only worthwhile thinkers that desolate pisshole of a region has produced in millennia.
I'm personally not into the Scottish Enlightenment because a lot of its big figures were basically just crypto-Anglos, Hume especially
There are loads of great Scottish writers though. Blind Harry, John Barbour, Gavin Douglas, William Drummond, Robert Fergusson, William Dunbar, Allan Ramsay, King James I, King James VI, Thomas Carlyle, Mary Shephard, James Burnett, Adhamh Mac Fhearghais, etc.
>>3313995
Don't forget Sir Walter Scott!
