Tore down my above ground pool a while back because of maintenance costs.

Now it's just a huge pit of sand.

Was wondering how'd I'd go about patching it up to be grass like the rest of my yard.

Based on years of experience, I can assure you that the best way to grow grass is to try to prevent it from growing. Buy some concentrated Roundup and saturate the sand weekly, and in no time at all it will be sprouting grass like crazy. No need to buy seeds or fertilizer, either.
>>

Seems like a good way to fuck up the rest of my lawn.
>>
turn soil over to push sand down, turn til you hit clay(if you have any near the surface), mix peat moss, thin layer of bag dirt, gypsum and work that into the topsoil you freed from that sand.

Next depends on your budget/time.(above done to KEEEP your grass alive/salt/sand/murder resistant)

Money/time, get pregrown grass, lay down into your fresh dirt, pin down corners, and water regularly til it blends into your yard(don't overwater)

Get bags of appropriate grass seed, spread, water before/after, do as bag says til you have grass. Bonus get green/brown/whatever covering to help keep grass seed from birds/drying out/blowing away.

I'm a newbie to the whole wood working thing. So far I've made a few small projects and now I want to tackle something a bit more difficult.

I'd like to create a wooden wall clock for a large wall in my house. I did some googling and came across this Etsy clock that was sold over 4 years ago.

https://archive.fo/TULT5

Any tips on reverse engineering this? It's 42" in diameter, but how do I go about spacing the numbers and the pieces of wood, etc?

TIA.

You need a tool called a "divider". You can buy one, but the ones they make nowadays are not very good. Check local estate auctions and see if you can find one made 50 years ago or more. We can help you refurbish it, and in the end you will have a tool that will be your go-to tool for the rest of your life.

Thanks for this bit of info. Anything to look for in particular? I've look at tools at yard sales for years, but only see cheap junk. Not been to any estate sales.

So I just bought a Roomba and I was wondering. I want it to sweep under my bed but it's too low.
How dumb would I be to place a brick in each leg? Or do you guys got other ideas. Keep in my that I can drill into the legs or something cause it's a rented place.

Asshole in kity for attention.

>place a brick in each leg

I've seen a ton of beds like this. Just fix the leg in place, on the riser, so jostling it won't make it slide off.
>>
They sell plastic risers that don't look ghetto for a few dollars. If you don't care, there's no reason not to use a brick instead. Just make sure you put risers or bricks under the supports in the middle of the bed as well.
>>
>>1193468
The brick will crumble and you'll surely die. Better get another plan.

I'm trying to teach myself Japanese, however looking at the hirigana and katakana alphabets are a little daunting. So I was wondering if it was possible to learn them separate, or if I had to learn them both together. Also, any general tips for keeping a new language notebook and learning it in general.

Stroke order is important. They aren't that hard. Get heisigs remembering the kanji.

Voicing is also more important than introductory books let on, like bridge and chopstick is written and pronounced the same way to gaijin but natives say them differently.

Consider finding a local tutor or college course in japanese
>>
>>1193303
would that I could, but I live in the bible belt, and the colleges around me teach Chinese or only offer Spanish/German foreign language focus.

You say stroke order, meaning that they actually can tell what order the strokes were made? That sounds absolutely absurd. I don't think I could ever pay that much attention to detail.

What is/are heisigs?
>>
>>1193306
Heisig is an authours last name
If you are whining about detail or this night possibly be too hard for you to ever do, go join the military or something where you're not allowed to fuck up to toughen your shit up.

Literally a child can learn this.

What is the downside to triangular shaped inserts anyway?

Why are diamond shapes so common? Is it worth using cheaper triangles?
19 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Diamond shapes like the 80° CNMG are probably popular because they are cheap and strong. I use them the most by far.

I don't use the T style triangle inserts a whole lot so I'm not really sure about them.
>>
>>1193209
I've got probably a couple/few hundred triangle style of all kinds, and maybe 50 or 75 diamonds of various sizes (mostly carbide, a couple diamond tipped CBN).

So I'm just wondering if I should buy a new triangle insert holder (the one I have is fucked up) or sell them and start using diamond shaped stuff.

With the diamond shaped ones it just seems like there is more material that isn't being used.

Ok guys.

so we all know what a garbage disposal is.

but why hasnt anyone ever thought about installing one inline with a toilet system?

when you flush it would send a 1 second pulse to the unit and macerate the poo and toilet paper etc.

NO MORE CLOGS

no more having to plunge and mash poo and be all gross.

anyone ever done this?

>>
>>1192677
Obviously you have never had to fuck with a clogged garbage disposal. Just dont flush anything except for shit and paper
>>
>>1192681

well they usually clog from some asshole trying to throw a whole chicken down the tubes.

i dont think it would have any issue with poo.
>>
>>1192677
Garbage disposals are breaking things up to go down a pipe smaller than 2". Toilets drain directly into larger pipes. It will be unnecessary expense and mess for absolutely no reason. And >>1192681 is right, what will clog a toilet will destroy a garbage disposal. Which is usually excessive toilet paper per flush. I don't think you want to try unclogging a garbage disposal jammed with poopy TP.

what's the cheapest place to buy 2.5 mm welding rods?

i'm on a budget

I'm gonna put solar panels on my pc so it won't give me a huge electricity bill which offsets the profits from my mining.

Any pointers? I only know that I'll also have to buy a few battery cells cos obviously you can't connect the solar panels directly to the power supply.

Can anybody on /diy/ tell me why my contractor would have spent hours soldering to move the supply pipes for the installation of a utility sink in our garage when he could have (imo) just fitted flexible hoses. Seems unnecessary. I'm originally from NZ though. Is this a code requirement in CA?

It uses utility water, very dangerous.
Also it's California, they have to regulate everything.

Today I had to dig up this baby oak tree that was growing between my hedges and in the process I had to cut away 95% of its roots. I couldn't remove the roots because it was in very rocky soil and its roots were intertwined with the rocks everywhere.

I want to rehabilitate the tree so that later on when there's a nice root ball I can transplant it in the backyard.

Right now I have it in a bucket filled with 50% Miracle Grow potting soil/50% native soil with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage, sitting inside a bigger bucket. I have never tried to keep a tree indoors before. Does anyone have tips, other than being vigilant about keeping it moist? Its life is hanging by a thread, HALP!

Thanks,

Never tried it. Shouldn't the sub get the sum of both channels?
>>

they get the same signal from the amp, so that makes it a bit easier
>>
>>1195831
i guess you wouldn't want to feed your sub with already amped sig. might blow the thing up (literally). got to take the sum of both sigs (you can mix them together using equal resistors before input at each signal line so they don't mix at the input of the amp)

Please give me your recipes for a homemade septic tank activator. We have three septic tanks, each about 8 cubic metres. Absolutely no help.

/diy/, I need your help.

I'm interested in burning Lichtenberg figures into wood, both as a cool art project, a potential way to make some money (they actually sell for a surprising amount), and as an analog for realistically modeling plant growth in a nontheoretical manner (don't ask, the answer isn't going to satisfy you). Observing videos and the assorted Angelfire-tier blogs I could find has shown that higher voltage produces the cleanest looking figures, while lower voltages produce thicker lined figures. As it would be to my benefit to have as much versatility as possible in this, I feel a variable transformer would suit my needs.

However, I am having tremendous difficulty in finding a variable transformer of sufficient voltage. Making Lichtenberg figures requires over 2 KV (2000 volts), and I can't find anything online that even reaches the KV range and doesn't cost mover a grand (and the ones that cost that much are actually too powerful, operating in the +100 KV range).

So I'm wondering if anyone here knows where I might be able to get a variable transformer that won't break the bank but actually reaches at at least 15 KV (but not more than 30 KV).

NOTE: I'm not retarded; I know exactly how dangerous it is to work with high voltage electrical equipment. I know all the required safety, and if there isn't a budget option then I'll use a regular high voltage transformer instead of (as an example) the DIY 50 KV variable transformer on Instructibles; the process is dangerous enough without having to rely on DIY equipment as well.

>>
>>1195363
You'd probably need to make your own transformer with a few different secondary coils. That means winding a lot of coils and making a metal core. You don't need perfection, so a solid metal core instead of a laminate will work if that's easier for you to source. For toroidals you'll need to get those off ebay.

Also, using a Microwave Oven Transformer (MOT) is what most people do, but those are single setting unless you wind a new secondary coil for it (like what people do for making spot welders out of them).

DIY equipment is fine so long as safety is kept in mind.

>So I'm wondering if anyone here knows where I might be able to get a variable transformer that won't break the bank but actually reaches at at least 15 KV (but not more than 30 KV).

use a 120v variac and a single voltage high voltage transformer ( non electronic one - just coils & an iron core )
>>
>>1195363

You flat-out aren't going to find what you need, in the price range you want, as an off-the-shelf solution. Mostly because of your "variable" requirement.

It would be much cheaper to make your own, even if you have to spend a bit on enough magnet wire to make a large enough transformer.
