Lets have a tool circle-jerk. What do you /diy/? What are the tools for your /diy/ing that are really worth the premium? Are you a mechanic dropping a couple mortgages on Fap-On stuff? A heavy industry dude with a red rocket for red cordless? A mommy blogger with an Etsy account for her bead jewelry who sprung for some Lindstrom? What are your best deal finds? Did you snag a $50 Craigslist lathe that you now make fidget spinners with? Are you restoring something old? What do you have on your tool wishlist?

Fluke, Keysight/Agilent/HP, Anritsu, Tektronix for T&M equip
Wiha, Crapsman, Husky, HFT for hand tools
Milwaukee for battery tools (>dat m18 lineup)
Motorola, Mikrotik, Ubiquiti for radio/IP stuffs
Brother sewing machine

Middle of a kitchen remodel now. Having some contractors come in to replace the subflooring... take them a day vs. taking me 3 months. I'll hire someone out to do the countertop/install. Otherwise it's all /diy/.
Next up is the bathroom. Might replace the sink/vanity, clean up the shit job the previous owners did on the drywall in there, then replace the cheap-as-shit plastic surround with tile.

Do all my own small-engine repairs (gens, snowmo, moto). Truck's not worth my time to wrench on for the most part. Got a good local mechanic that works for cheap.

Do some other work (mechanical and electrical) here and there, so i've got a breddy gud array of tools to choose from.

Anyone here enjoy painting?

Let's have a painting thread where we discuss painting, paints, tools, techniques etc.

I've recently discovered it to be a very comfy and rewarding process.
Now all I want to want to do is paint stuff.

I enjoy glossy oil paint and brush application the most.

What painting projects can I take on?

Getting real sick of the stink of curry coming from the hallway every goddam night.

Ideally I'd just be able to buy something like this, but they're just straight up not available in Australia and I'm finding it really hard to justify spending $60+ on importing $3 worth of plastic.

How's about not living in a fucking apartment. If the city's the only place you can get work then boy have I got the advice for you.

So my Dad lives in Australia and gets supervising jobs all over the show in boom towns. One such town is Moree, they're absolutely fucking desperate for workers. They even have abbos running the combines they're that desperate, and because it's a nothing town you can easily find a place to live for $200 a week while still rolling in a 2k a week pay check. Now the jobs in this place are in grain, warehouses, mechanics and trucking.

If you want my advice, go to Moree and work for 5 years then get the fuck out of there and buy whatever the fuck middle class house you please. Then you can be a plasterer or some shit to pay for food and internet.

So diy me and my brother plan to make or at least start to work on a Gaming table for D&D, Magic, Poker, and the such. A general gaming table, I'm planing to put a screen in the middle, I've got an old monitor from when I updated my PC, I have the electrical locked down since I'm an electrician, grabbed a few outlets some SJ cord for a plug and some twelve wire for the guts but I wanted to ask if anyone has some advice on stuff like what type of wood works best for a table and the like. any advice for a first timer would be great.

Generally the sheer 'mass' of wood you need tends to price out some of the more 'exotic' types, depending on your budget though you might be able to snag some teak or even walnut boards.
Nicely stained and polished pine with a few layers of lacquer, rubbed back and shiny can look very good though if you put the effort into it.
Reclaimed timber used in old buildings, mouldings, floorboards and the like with a distressed appearance can also be cool, but people sort of twigged onto it as being a bit of a bargain and that's gotten more expensive over the years.
>>
Before you do anything, make sure the monitor has a wide enough viewing angle so everyone around the table can see it.

I have a stupid question, so I thought I'd ask DIY!
Can you drain a small segments of a swamp while keeping the surrounding water intact? Is it possible to wall off an area with canvas or tarp, and pump the water out? Has anyone heard or believe in this crazy idea?

you'd need to build a dam.
>>

why cant I with canvas?
>>
You can either reclaim a portion by building the land upwards or do it your way. Your way would have to seal the underneath as well like a reverse swimming pool to stop groundwater seeping back up

Hi /diy/ i was thinking to make a router table from scratch, i dont know much about it, so i was thinking to keep the table the simpliest i can, and use a hand router. Will it work? there is something i need to keep in mind when doing it? any recommendations will be welcome.

>Google it.

I'm surprised that's not a bannable offense for a question like OP's. This would be a great thread to discuss factors involved that affect things like precision, safety, ease of use, etc., which can help others learn basic concepts that carry over into other projects.

Or we could discuss shipping containers, small houses, personal submarines, LARP weapons, and other tripe.

I posted this in that thread and I'll post it again...

find board
drill holes in it
get long screws that fit the base
screw router underneath board
done

it's not that difficult of a concept and it can be that simple

Are all telescopic poles for paint rollers universal, or do certain brands use some kind of proprietary connection?

True, but they occasionally try to come up with an improvement, like Shure-loc, which is compatible with the old screw threads, but allows you to quickly switch poles or use no pole at all.

The old tried-and-true works best in my opinion, and I've been painting for 22 years.

Roller poles are like lots of tools: if you buy cheap crap, you wind up with cheap crap. If you're going to paint more than a few rooms, get decent poles.

There are gotchas though. One brand has a little lever that you press to adjust the length. The problem is that it's too easy to accidentally touch it. I was rolling over a window where my boss decided to save 10 minutes and leave the blinds up, and I tapped the lever and my 4 foot pole changed into a 2 foot pole and painted the blinds on the way down.

I want to build a 'cabin' like thoreau but with some limitations and I basically want to ask about foundations and the integrity/stability of a cabin. It needs to last a year and a half at least, and keep out water etc as it will include books and electronics etc.

Sorry for lack of images - I lack a camera but 4chan demands an image so I've given a pic of Thoreau lazily taken from wikipedia.

The cabin will be build probably atop a small hill on property my family owns, about 100m from the main house. I'm getting more independent but I lack the $$$ to get my own place truly but I need my own simple place for study. Fell for the student meme!

Current build plan will involve some sort of pillar/pile driven into the ground at intervals and then connected with painted (for water resist) pressure-strengthened long planks, with some deck blocks to protect a bit and stabilise my structure. This bit is where I am least confident and may be the most expensive too.
After that cardboard boxes filled with earth will be rammed to make 'bricks' and star-picketed together for the walls, will painted planks for extra stability and warmth, also used to connect to a gable roof of painted wood planks with a ceiling of the same material.

I need your help to point out some of the horrible flaws in this plan and possible solutions. ANY recommendations will be very welcome (though do note my budget is sucky as fricking heck).

>about 100m from the main house

does your family live in that house? do you live in that house? If so, this is just weird. And if some other family lives in that house it is beyond weird.

Will this place have electricity? Running water? Sewer? Refrigerator? If you run up to the main house every hour it seems a bit precious to have the cabin.

How much would it cost to build a similar obstacle course? It's very similar to an Army confidence course: lots of logs, some rope netting and pits.

Depends entirely on source material cost and the cost to lug it around. Logs are not light and if you don't have a few spare forests to source you'll need to buy and transport them.

I have this nifty strimmer/brush cutter attachment that's a tiller. I noticed that there are other brands in the UK and US that offer dethatcher attachments. I want to fabricate dethatcher tines for my tiller attachment. do you know what kind of shaft this is? the cylindrical kind with a flat grind to retain the tine that fits over it. when i google I get woodruff keys.

I was thinking I could either get some... I dont know what they're called. the part that slots onto this kind of shaft and weld some cut carbon steel plates onto it or weld some aerator coring tubes into it or both.

thing is that dethatchers and aerators are pretty rare in australia and cost about $100 to rent for a day. since i'd be using it maybe twice a year it doesnt make sense to spend the money on renting one or buying a dedicated unit.

Im currently pooping in the pitch black.

DTE is objectively the worst power company on earth.

How can i power a 65in tv, computer, a few lights, a DVR, and ps4 for a minimum of 8 hours so this stops happening?

Pic related. At 17% battery and i haven't even finished pooping to use my phone as a flashlight. Likely won't even get a clean wipe because i can't see

Solar panels, charge controller, battery array, and inverter. I live in a small town and we used to disconnect the main breaker and connect the inverter output into a wall socket to power the house's electrical grid for a while during blackouts.

>I live in a APT and can't put shit on the roof or install things on the balcony.
How fast can you pedal :^) Jokes aside, there's no need to use solar panels though, you can charge your batteries from the grid and use the power stored in them to run an inverter.

With all those things running you're looking at 1000W going down the drain. If you want your setup to last 8 hours you'll need an 8000 Wh array. That's as much as a Tesla power wall, so if you're going to spend that much energy a generator would be a cheaper but noisier idea.

Look at power board for bad caps.
>>
>>1198644
its commonly bad (leaking/ bloated) capacitors on the power regulation board. you can check youtube for tutorials.

unless you know how to use a multimeter to check the boards and power rails at a component level you probably cant diagnose this yourself. without a diagnoses you can only blindly replace the various boards inside it which might be more expensive than buying a new TV

replacement parts can be found on ebay

So. If I could get some advice please? I have a socket in the kitchen which tested fine (working) and a light fixture on the back porch with a socket wired in. Also tested fine. But starting today, when I turn the porch light on, and have my fridge plugged into said socket in the kitchen, the breaker trips after 5 minutes. They are on the same breaker and never had problems before. Breaker going bad?
And thank you.
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
More details needed. Give pictures of breaker and equipment.
>>
If your breaker is tripping and you can still reset it, your breaker is probably fine. Check the output on the wire coming from the breaker with a clamp on ammeter to be sure. Clamp on multimeter/ ammeter will run you about $15 at a harbor freight.

First thing I'd do is vacuum the condenser coil on the fridge. Dirt is a great insulator and your fridge works harder when there is no place for heat to go.

While playing around with the ammeter, you can rule out bad house wiring by unplugging everything and removing all light bulbs on the faulting circuit and checking for any amperage remaining on that circuit.

Don't just get a breaker with a higher trip value. The breaker is protecting the insulation on the wire when it trips. Look inside your toaster if you want to see what high amperage does to tiny wires.
>>
>>1198877
This isn't true. I can't tell you how many times I've had to replace a breaker in a commercial setting because it trips with a load on it that it should handle. You spend an hour looking for a short that doesn't exist, only to find the breaker trips with a 5 amp load.
