I just realized that the designs of the majority of the Adventure Time characters are the reasons why the fight scenes in this show are so bad. They're not built for action, just to look comedic. Even Steven Universe, which has noticeably uglier character designs, actually have characters with physical depth so that fights have more impact.

I think it's less that the designs are bad and more that the choreography is bad. Every single fight scene is pretty unoriginal. Finn does some form of acrobatics, someone gets knocked down by one punch or something, then they do that cliche sword/weapon clash where they get close to each other and talk, usually followed by the killing blow.
The jake fight scenes are a lot more fun to watch imo just because of the shape shifting power.

IMO, the best part of Rebirth was things outside of the main universe. For the main DCU, the "goal" was to get everything to be, at worst, mediocre, with at least potential to one day be good. Besides maybe New Super-Man and maybe Deathstroke, most mainline series have just been "meh."
The good stuff has been most everything else that DC published: Vertigo/Young Animal, Hanna-Barbera, now Wildstorm, Looney Tunes, and now the Kirby one-shots (and Mister Miracle).

The animation quality isn't top-tier for the most part. The few CG elements aged poorly. Story is kinda meh. But goddamn if it doesn't hold up simply because everything Chel-related is god-tier and the Tulio-Miguel bromance is at least high-tier. Everything with those three is done incredibly well, from character interaction and dialogue to animation.
