It helps if you read a post to the end before replying. I said "for the most part" and later clarified that Chel is superbly animated. Also I meant it in the way that there isn't as much detail compared to Disney animation for example (a lot of extras have sameface), but it's still very fluid and expressive. You can tell the people on this were very talented and experienced, just not working with a blockbuster budget.

I'm continuously put out that we've had show adaptions of damn near every movie so far, including like 3 for Madagascar, Dragons, Croods, Shrek, even fucking Spirit now, yet we've never seen a hint of any El Dorado adaptions.

The animation quality is top notch but it felt like it lacked personality. Chel is about the only thing visually distinctive about the film which isn't how it should be for a film set in a legendary lost city.

Story wise there were two big problems: The "tribe treats outsiders as gods" has been done for 50+ years in film and it's tired and cliched, I remember being around when this came out and I didn't care about it enough to see it because of the plot.

Second: gotta have a princess or self insert Mary-Sue to romance, Chel is a sassy sidekick more than a romantic interest (even if they do get it on more than any Disney Princess).

Could going CG have saved it? Not sure CG of that era would have pulled it off.

Are there any good articles on what happened to the animators at all these studios?

I know a bunch found work doing TV Ads but childrens shows just farmed off their animation to Korea as they need to keep costs down. Hard to imagine a lot of these animators were able to pick up 3D modelling and you can only have so many move on to directing and/or storyboarding.

There's a big difference between a high concept film being based around a cliche and a plot element being a cliche. Disney make an absolute killing off of the whole Princess thing.

For CG, it was a couple of years too soon to do it Justice. Shrek made big advances with humans in 3d animated films but they still weren't quite there.

The guy was pretty clever. What was obviously going on before they arrived is a power struggle between him and the priest. Even if he knew early on, he didn't want to expose them as long as they sided more with him, besides that would antagonize him to them and possibly make them side with the priest who would turn the people against him with "holy" support. Once they publicly renounced the priest, it stopped being an issue, so he let on that he knew, yet didn't expose them because he realized they were nice guys.

I like that this actually realistically develops unlike most Disney movies:

Tulio, who spent those points on INT instead of CHA and didn't take levels in Bard, won Chel over with his mind and character. And they fall in love after realizing how similar they are and recognizing each other as equals in their craft.

The El Dorado myth is tied to a different culture altogether, the Muisca, who were not an empire like the Inca, Mayans and Aztecs, but a federation who's lands were north of the Incas and south of the Mayans in the Andean range in what is modern day Colombia. But in the movie, while the historical accuracy is doubtful, they look to be Mayan.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with romancing a sassy sidekick, especially when you consider that Road to El Dorado is essentially a heist movie, not a heroic myth.

Love interests don't have to be pure and innocent.

The movie's real weaknesses are as follows:

* The songs are merely decent. None of them are particularly great -- even "It's Tough to Be a God" falls just short of being as good as any song from, say, The Prince of Egypt.

* Once Miguel and Tulio actually reach the city, the plot tends to wander off track a lot. While the ball game does manage the important step of giving away the scam to Tzekel-Kan, it really goes on rather longer than it should, combined with a lot of just "haha we're doing things in the city" scenes that, combined, add up to a little more faffing about than is justified.

* The final battle with Tzekel-Kan is just missing something. I'm not sure precisely what, but there's something too distant about the villain; even when he's commanding a giant stone jaguar he doesn't have the same sort of menace or presence as, say, Jafar. Maybe part of it is that the jaguar's design is fairly plain; it's mostly made of smooth geometric shapes, not the sort of ornamentation you might expect to give it that extra zing. Maybe it's that Tzekel Kan himself looks like a goddamn anencephalic. Point is: weak villain, weak climax.

It's definitely still one of Dreamworks' stronger offerings.
