At first the small corridor of the ride was misty, but once it faded Zack could see this was 'just another dumb kids ride' whose pop-out monsters would struggle to scare even a house cat.


As they rounded the second corner, Zack began to daydream about the other rides like The Big Drop, or The Ring of Fire. The murmurs of the fair-goers and the distant cries of rollercoasters taunted him. Instead, pop-out mummies, Frankensteins, vampires and ghosts.


But as the ride carried on, even Zack began to grow scared. Shouldn't we be finished by now? he thought to himself. He remembered the building being noticeably small for an amusement ride--almost the size and shape of a large semi-truck trailer.


Maybe it's a carnival trick with mirrors, he thought. 'Then again' he thought to himself, 'time does move slow when you're bored'--he laughed to himself. But something was off; why were these corridors so long?


Davie hadn't noticed. Zack thought about yelling to the operator when he realized he could no longer hear the fair.
They rounded another corner, then another corner: each one longer than the next. Zack checked his watch, they must have been in there for twenty minutes. It was then that Zack realized this was no optical illusion; as they rounded the corner their track was met with a very steep hill. Perhaps Zack would get the rollercoaster he so wanted.

But the ride had it's own ideas. When the cart reached the top of the ramp the walls had grown. Somehow this semi-truck trailer had transformed into a twenty story parking-lot.
"What's going on" yelled Zack; "Please, just let us out!".
Minutes turned into hours. Davie and Zack had abandoned the cart--petrified they would end up somewhere horrific. They sat together on the ground hoping for answers--or a person--to guide them. When the silence finally broke they never knew it would be so terrifying. A faint laugh began to echo through the long corridor. Zack was enraged: it was him, the operator. He ran after him as fast as he could, Zack was determined to catch him and get out of the ride. But, again: nothing. Zack returned to Davie in defeat, but as he walked around the corner he noticed it: Davie was gone.
Hours turned into days. Zack wondered if he would ever leave this place. He started to cry when a gust of wind fell across his face. He stopped crying--he knew this could mean something. He chased the wind as far as he could: it was coming through a crack in the wall. Zack kicked out as much of the wall as he could and squeezed himself through the tiny opening. The sound he made was noticeable--if the operator was around he would have surely heard him. Zack knew he would have to run fast, but then he realized: the carnival had vanished. The Funhouse and carnival was just a barn in a corn field--but Zack had no time to think and ran towards where he remembered the highway to be.He came to a lookout and used it to hopefully spy a way out. Looking back he saw the still tiny building of the Funhouse. A man in white appeared to be moving around it, that's when he noticed it suddenly look in his direction and scream: Zack almost felt his stomach empty.

Zack eventually fell out of the maze onto the highway, almost knocking a car off into the ditch. The driver was furious, but could see Zack was in trouble and quickly helped him into the car and off away from the field. Zack looked back and saw a figure emerge from the maze.

When Zack arrived at the police station the officers were so confused with his story. Nonetheless they called his parents who had never been so happy to see him. "We were so worried" they told him. They wrapped him in a blanket and safely placed him in the back of their SUV. "We will go out to this address and we will find your son", the officers told them. Wanting to comfort Zack they decided to head home and wait for the police to call. Zack's father started the car out of gear and the car jolted forward very sharply before they started driving off. Zack didn't mind, and was just happy to be going home. That's when Zack realized: the radio station they were playing seemed oddly familiar. It was a broken carousel-like noise, something he must have heard at the fair. That's when he realized, this was more than deja vu. He looked up at the rearview mirror to see nothing but a toothless grin smiling back at him. The man in the car turned back to face him.
"I hope you like rides, boy" said the man; "Because we're going to do this over and over again".

I remember during the Iraq War hearing about how the hit-and-run tactics of the US was leaving their cities open to subsequent looting and destruction.
