i would say that enthogens and psychedelics play a role since they shatter our basal experience of reality, and may produce ego death. (tryptamines entheogens etc..)
It may be seen as some kind of shortcut.
But the integration of the experience may be difficult (in the sense that you do not keep all the insights when returning to the basal state)
maybe it has to deal with pre-existing wisdom of the subject experience mind shattering experience ?

The valley was about a half mile across and three miles long, with three permanent lakes and two seasonal looking lake beds. As I rode down to the banks of one of the seasonal beds, trying to figure out if I could cross the mud, I heard something. Not sure what, but like a pant, or a grunt, from across the lake bed. I cut off the engine and heard it again, a little closer. Then I saw movement, through the brush, something coming along the shore, avoiding the mud, around to my side of the lake. Don't think I hit my head, so I must've winded myself because I lost consciousness briefly. When I came to it was almost completely dark with only a hint of light still on the clouds over head. I dusted myself off, and started working on getting the bike started (carburetor liked to get jammed closed if the bike fell over). When I started hearing the shuffling, grunt, sigh noise again. Now I've always been a little paranoid and jumpy, and being in the sticks I had guns from a young age. At the time I carried a shitty 9mm revolver and kept my dads shotgun loaded in the house (I was left alone a lot growing up).

I had the revolver with me while I rode, and immediately got it out and just stood there for a while. Half expecting to see the deer come out of trees. The noise kept going, and I could hear something moving down the hill up behind, where I'd come from. Growing up in the sticks hunting and tracking, I can hear the difference in step, between a deer, a dog, and a man. And this had the step of a man. But what I saw coming down the hill wasn't a man. It was dark and I could only see a silhouette, but this j what I could see. It was bipedal, but I wouldn't call it humanoid. Tall, but moved closer to the ground. And it had horns. Not antlers like deer, but horns. Like a goat or ram. I started waiving the pistol around and shouted at it. Ear splitting, head ringing scream. Like a horse whinny, with the tinkling of breaking glass mixed with a man's shout. Shrill, and sharp. And loud beyond belief. And it just stopped. When I finally found my feet and turned around (waiving the now empty gun). There was nothing behind me. I spent the next week in the house, bolted up, carrying the shot gun everywhere, with every light on. When my dad finally came home five days later I nearly blew his head off when he opened the front door. Put a whole through the porch ceiling. He didn't believe me. Blamed it on drugs and violent video games. Took the guns away and grounded me.
